Science Courses C52050 Biology I 9 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Pre-requisite: Teacher recommendation from 8 th grade science teacher. Topics discussed are similar to the topics discussed in C52060 Advanced Biology I Pre-IB with more of an emphasis on applying biology to everyday life. Students should take this course by teacher recommendation only. C52060 Advanced Biology I Pre-IB 9 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Pre-requisite- Teacher recommendation from 8 th grade Science teacher. Biology I Pre-IB, the highest Biology track open to 9 th graders, provides through regular laboratory investigations and classroom activities a study of the structures and functions of living organisms and the interactions with the environment. This study explores the functions and processes of cells, tissues, organs, and systems within various species of living organisms and the roles and interdependencies of organisms within populations, communities, ecosystems, and the biosphere. Students have the opportunities to (1) gain understanding of the history of the development of biological knowledge, (2) explore the uses of biology in various careers, and (3) investigate biological questions and problems related to personal needs and social issues. C52520 Biology II: AP (Honors) DC/Concurrent Enrollment 10, 11, 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Advanced Biology I (C52060) and Chemistry I (C52120) or Advanced Chemistry I (C52160 or C52270) Recommended: Advanced Biology I (C52060) and Advanced Chemistry I (C52160 or C52270). Course Description: Biology II Advanced Placement is a course that follows the College Board s Advanced Placement course outline. Topics include: (1) molecules and cells; (2) heredity and evolution; (3) organisms and populations. Specifically, students will study organic/biochemistry, metabolism, enzyme mechanics, and molecular and Mendelian genetics. Second semester topics include microbial techniques, phylogeny through a review of fundamental physiology on a system-by-system basis. Students enrolled in the course prepare for the College Board s Biology Advanced Placement Examination. This course is the first year in a two year program for IB HL Biology. PNC Dual Credit/Concurrent Enrollment Option: BIOL 11000 and BIOL 11100 8 credits C52480 Anatomy and Physiology (Honors) 11, 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Advanced Biology I Pre-IB (C52060) and Advanced Chemistry I or Chemistry I (C52160 or C52120) This is an advanced course focusing on how the human body is constructed and how it functions. The relationship between form and function is explored in depth as each of the major systems of the human body is studied in significant detail. Course work involves roughly equal amounts of lecture/discussion and investigative work. Extensive dissection is required. This course is intended as a college prep class or a class for students considering a career in the health occupations. This course is the second in the two year program for IB Biology HL students. C52910 Biology II: Marine Biology (Key Largo, FL) 9, 10, 11 1 Science Elective Credit (Offered in Summer Only) Prerequisite: Biology I along with a teacher recommendation. 2

Course Objectives: 1. The unique opportunity to study an ecosystem that is not characteristic of our region due to environmental conditions. 2. To understand the importance of reef systems and the threats that are causing their destruction. 3. To gain an understanding about the diversity of marine life and the different types of ecologies that a reef system offers. Evaluations: Successful completion of and participation in all lab exercises and field trips at Key Largo, FL, quizzes, and exams. This course is a summer trip that students must apply to be a part of during the fall semester, cost of the trip varies from year to year. C52920 Biology II: Advanced Marine Biology 10, 11 1 Science Elective Credit (Offered in Summer Only) Prerequisite: The successful completion of one year of high school science, the successful completion of Marine Biology, along with a teacher recommendation. Course Objectives: 1. The unique opportunity to study an ecosystem that is not characteristic of our region due to environmental conditions. 2. To gain an understanding in marine ecological research methods by conducting six survey dives and 2-3 night dives. 3. The unique opportunity to perform tasks inside an undersea laboratory, to work on underwater communications, and to work the ocean floors using advanced diving gear. Evaluations: Successful completion of and participation in all lab exercises and field trips at Key Largo, Fl., quizzes, and exams. Students must apply to be a part of this trip and have completed the Marine Biology I course previously. Cost of this trip varies year to year. C52490 Biology II: Zoology 10, 11, 12 2 Cr, 2 Sem. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Advanced Biology I (C52060) or Biology I C52050) and Advanced Chemistry I ( C52160 or C52170) or Chemistry I (C52120) This Advanced Science Core 40 course will present an in-depth study of evolutionary relationships used in the classification of organisms into their representative phyla. Students will study comparative embryology, taxonomy, anatomy and physiology of the major phyla of invertebrates and vertebrates. Students will do laboratory work in dissection and histology. The purpose of a study in invertebrate and vertebrate zoology is to expose the students to an evolutionary, embryological, systematic, and physical comparison of phyla of the animal kingdom. C52120 Chemistry I 10, 11, 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Prerequisites: Successful completion of C52060 Advanced Biology I (or teacher recommendation) or C52340 Integrated Chemistry and Physics, and Algebra I Topics discussed are similar to the topics discussed in Chemistry I but to a lesser extent. This course covers the major laws and theories that govern the chemistry of elements and compounds. Chemistry I allows the student to synthesize useful models of the structure of matter and the mechanisms of its interactions. This course provides through laboratory investigations and classroom activities a study of the forms of matter and the mathematical concepts that both mass and energy interactions demonstrate. Students have the opportunities to: (1) gain understanding of the history of chemistry, (2) explore the uses of chemistry in various careers, (3) cope with chemical questions and problems related to personal needs and social issues, and (4) learn and practice laboratory safety. 3

C52160 Advanced Chemistry I Pre-IB 9 2 Cr., 2 Sem. C52270- Advanced Chemistry I Pre-IB 10, 11, 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Prerequisites: B or higher in Advanced Biology I Pre-IB (C52060) and B or higher in Algebra I This honors course content is similar to C52120 Chemistry I however topics are covered in greater depth. There is more emphasis on problem solving and critical thinking. Students are expected to be stronger in Algebra and are expected to become more independent thinkers. This class is appropriate for 9 th /10 th grade students pursuing the IB diploma or students interested in a Science field or STEM field. C52510 Chemistry II: AP IB SL (Honors) DC 11, 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Prerequisite: Advanced Chemistry I (C52160 or C52270) Recommended pre- or co-requisite: AP Physics I (C52300); PreCalculus/Calculus This course is designed for the student who is planning to major in engineering, physics, pre med, pre vet, pharmacy or chemistry. Course includes: an intensive review in chemical principles, additional topics with a strong emphasis on inorganic chemistry, and extensive laboratory investigation. AP Exam: Students are expected to take the Advanced Placement Exam as part of the course requirements PNW Dual Credit/Concurrent Enrollment Option: CHM 11500 and CHM 11600 (8) C52340 Integrated Chemistry & Physics (ICP) 10, 11, 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Biology I (S52050); Algebra I (either concurrent or completed) and Teacher recommendation. Cannot be taken after earning previous credit in Chemistry I (C52160 or C52120 or C52270) and/or Physics I (C52260) Integrated Chemistry-Physics is an introductory course in which students explore fundamental chemistry and physics principles. Students enrolled in this course examine, through the process of scientific inquiry, the structure and properties of matter, chemical reactions, forces, motion, and the interactions between energy and matter. Students will also be introduced to the basics of chemistry and physics laboratory investigations and will look at real-world problems that may have personal or social consequences beyond the classroom. ICP is not a substitute for full-year chemistry or Physics, but does satisfy Indiana Core 40 diploma requirements in the physical sciences category. C52180 Advanced Earth Space Science I 10, 11, 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Prerequisite: Students need to have successfully completed Advanced Biology I (C52060) or Biology I C52060) and Advanced Chemistry I (C52160 or C52270) or Chemistry I ( C52120) or Integrated Chemistry/Physics (C52340) Course Description: Earth/Space Science is a lab science course emphasizing both earth materials and processes. Topics include: rock and mineral formation, plate tectonics, earthquake and volcanic activity, atmospheric dynamics and storm events, factors affecting the earth's climates, groundwater and surface water characteristics, fossils and Earth history, glaciers and the ice ages, earth's special position in space, geology of the moon and planets, and the current status of space exploration. C52500 Earth Space Science I 11, 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Prerequisite:. Students need to have successfully completed Biology I (C52050) and Integrated Chemistry & Physics (C52340). Teacher recommended required. Course Description: Earth/Space Science is a lab science course emphasizing the following topics and their relevance to daily life: Earth systems, rock and mineral formation, Earth resources, plate tectonics, structure of the solid Earth, earthquake and volcanic activity, groundwater and surface water 4

characteristics, Earth history, glaciers and ice ages, structure of the atmosphere, weather and climate, and age, origin, and evolution of our solar system and the universe C52210 Environmental Science: AP (Honors) DC 10, 11, 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Prerequisites: Successful completion of Advanced Biology I Pre-IB (C52060), Chemistry I (C52120) or Advanced Chemistry I C52160 or C52170) and Algebra I. Course Description: The environmental science course will build upon the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required in understanding the interrelationships of the natural world. It will help students to identify and analyze natural and human-caused environmental problems, evaluate the relative risks, and examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing these problems. Students will investigate the interdependence of the earth's environment and the survival of humankind by drawing upon scientific methods from the four scientific disciplines (geosciences, chemistry, biology and physics). AP Test: Students are expected to take the Advanced Placement Exam Out-of-class Requirements: School and community service projects. C52540 - Environmental Science 11, 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem Prerequisites: Successful completion of Advanced Biology I (C52060) or Biology I (C52050), Chemistry I (C52120) or Advanced Chemistry I C52160 or C52270) or Integrated Chemistry/Physics (C52340) and Algebra I. Course Description: Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary course that integrates biology, earth science, chemistry, and other disciplines. Students enrolled in this course conduct in-depth scientific studies of ecosystems, population dynamics, resource management, and environmental consequences of natural and anthropogenic processes. Activities: Students formulate, design, and carry out laboratory and field investigations as an essential course component. Students completing Environmental Science, acquire the essential tools for understanding the complexities of national and global environmental systems. Out-of-class Requirements: School and community service projects C52260 Physics I 10, 11, 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Prerequisite: Algebra I and Geometry Co-requisite Algebra II desirable This course will cover the same topics as AP Physics 1 but in a more conceptual, less rigorous manner. Various phenomena such as mechanics, waves, light, sound, heat, and electricity and magnetism will be covered. C52300 AP Physics 1: Algebra-based Year One (Honors) 10, 11, 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Prerequisite: Algebra I and Geometry Co-requisite: Algebra II This advanced course is an in depth exploration into physics topics of mechanics, with rotations, mechanical waves and sound, and an introduction to electrostatics and simple circuits. AP: Students are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement Exam C52310 AP Physics 2: Algebra-based Year Two (Honors) 10, 11, 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Prerequisite: Algebra I and Geometry Co-requisite: Algebra II This advanced course is an in depth exploration into physics topics of fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, optics, atomic and nuclear physics. AP: Students are encouraged to take the Advanced Placement Exam 5

C52320 AP Physics II C: Mechanics, Electricity & Magnetism (Honors) DC 11, 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Prerequisites: AP Physics 1: Algebra-based Co-requisite: AP Calculus AB or BC This advanced course is calculus-based exploration that builds upon concepts explored in AP Physics: Algebra-based Year One and Two, intended for eventual engineering, science, technology or medical majors in college. Topics covered in this course include an exhaustive exploration of Mechanics during the first semester, and Electricity and Magnetism during the second semester. The class is significantly math-intensive, focusing on upper level mathematical problem solving. AP: Students are encouraged to take Advanced Placement Exam C52940 IB Sports, Exercise, and Health Science IB SL (Honors) 10, 11, 12 2 Cr., 2 Sem. Prerequisite: Successful completion of Advanced Biology I (C52060) and Advanced Chemistry I (C52160 or C52270) Chemistry I ( C52120) Course Description: The IB course in sports, exercise and health science standard level (SL) involves the study of the science that underpins physical performance. This course is directed towards students who are interested in medical/health science careers (i.e. exercise science, physical therapy, sports medicine, athletic training, personal training, coaching, etc). The course incorporates the traditional disciplines of anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, psychology and nutrition. Students cover a range of topics and carry out practical (experimental) investigations in both laboratory and field settings. This provides an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and understanding necessary to apply scientific principles and critically analyze human performance. Where relevant, the course will address issues of international dimensions and ethics by considering sport, exercise and health relative to the individual in a global context. IB Assessment: Completion of all IB assessment criteria is mandatory. This includes both the internal and external assessment (exam) as outlined in the IB curriculum guide for SEHS. Any non-ib candidate will take an in class external assessment as their final exam in order to fulfill this external assessment requirement. 6
