A departmental final examination will be given in this course. 3 credits. Book: College Algebra Alternate,8th edition, Ron Larson, Cengage, 2011. ISBN # 978-0- 95-97065-1. A new book is packaged with an WebAssign id to get into the software. If you want to save money, buy only the access code online. You have 12 days FREE access to the course. It contains the ebook with all kinds of multimedia videos, powerpoints, etc. with it. We will be doing all the homework online in WebAssign, and the reviews and TESTS will also be online in WebAssign. The course id number is: hccs 159 9629. PLEASE BE SURE TO INCLUDE STUDENTS ID WHEN YOU ENROLL IN THE CLASS. Prerequisites: Math 1312 "C" or its equivalent or an acceptable placement test score. Please use the following address to see all the policies and procedures for DE Students in the DE Student Handbook at * http://de.hccs.edu/de/de-student-handbook*. Course intent: This course is designed as a review of advanced topics in algebra for science and engineering students who plan to take the calculus sequence in preparation for their various degree programs. It is also intended for non-technical students who need college mathematics credits to fulfil requirements for graduation and prerequisites for other courses. It is generally transferable as math credit for non-science majors to their disciplines. Grading Policies: 90-100 => A, 80-89 => B, 70-79 => C, 60-69 => D, below 60 is an F The last day to withdraw with a W from the course is NOVEMBER 3, 2011 at pm. You must withdraw by then or you will get the average of all required tests. New students are only allowed 6 withdrawals in their academic career and still receive a degree. Now you can withdraw online at: https://hccsaweb.hccs.edu:8080/psp/csprd/?cmd=login&languagecd=eng. I expect you to

withdraw yourself as I don`t want to be responsible for a 6th W. Be very careful about withdrawals. 60% of your grade will be from the TESTS (online, 1 attempt) that you take. 10% of your grade will be from homework grades. 30% will be from the Final Exam which is in the TESTING CENTER. Or if you are out of town, you have to go through the DE office to get a proctor. (there will be a review online at my learning web) You will know your grades for those tests/reviews done online immediately. There are no make up exams so you must follow the CALENDAR on the HOMEPAGE very carefully. So please make note of the testing times. I am going to leave all TESTS and REVIEWS open for the whole semester.,however, the first Units will close on a day designated on your calendar. So if you don't keep up, you may be dropped from the class.. Objectives: At the completion of this course, a student should be able to: 1. Solve linear equations and some word problems. 2. Solve Quadratic Equations in one variable by factoring, completing the square and the quadratic formula. 3, Solve a literal equation for a specified variable.. Find the distance between two points in the Cartesian Plane. 5. Solve radical equations, fractional equations, and equations of quadratic form. 6. Recognize the equation of a straight line, graph a straight line, find the slope, intercepts of a line, know the relationship between the slopes of parallel and perpendicular lines, and be able to determine the equation of the line from information given. 7, Know the definition of a function, determine the domain and range of a function, evaluate expressions involving functional notation, simplify expressions involving the algebra of functions, graph functions by plotting points, know the definition of inverse functions, and given a function find its inverse. 8. Graph linear,quadratic,piece-wise, and absolute value functions. 9. Solve linear, quadratic and absolute value inequalities and give solutions in interval notation. 10. Graph the solution of a linear inequality system in two variables.

11. Understand vertical and horizontal shifts of graphs and stretching, shrinking, and reflection of graphs of functions. 12.Solve quadratic and rational inequalities. 13. Solve system of equations in three variables by algebraic techniques. 1. Solve systems of linear inequalities by graphing. 15, Graph and find equations of circles. 16. Understand exponential and logarithmic functions. GENERAL TIMELINE (specifics in each unit in the CALENDAR on the HOMEPAGE) Please watch the CALENDAR on the HOMEPAGE as these times are dependent on the semester. The first week well be doing Assignment 1 in the START HERE folder. ONE 3 SECTIONS - P6,Chapter 1.1, 1., 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, 1.8. FINAL EXAM NEW DE STUDENT USER ID: Your Blackboard login user ID will be your HCC User ID (sometines referred to as the "W" number). All HCC students have a unique User ID. If you do not know your User ID you can look it up using the following links: a) From www.hccs.edu, click on "Login Help" under the "Student System Sign In" field Then click on "Retrieve User ID" and follow the instructions.

Or use the direst link: http://hccsaweb.hccs.edu:8080/servlets/iclientservlet/sauat/?cmd=start The default student password will still be "distance". As always, the students will then be prompted to change their password after their first login. Please visit DE Technical Support FAQS if you need additional assistance with your login.; STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES: Any student with a documented disability (e.g. physical, learning, psychiatric, vision, hearing, etc) who needs to arrange reasonable accommodations must contact the appropriate HCC Disability Support Service (DSS) Counselor at the beginning of each semester. Faculty are authorized to provide only the accommodations requested by the Disability Support Services Office. Students who are requestiong special testing accommodations must first contact the appropriate DSS Counselor for assistance. Please contact the Distance Education Counselors at 713.718.5275, option # or at de.counseling@hccs.edu in order to be referred to the appropriate HCC DSS Counselor. HCCS Course Withdrawal Policy The State of Texas has begun to impose penalties on students who drop courses excessively.l That is, if you repeat the same course more than twice, you have to pay extra tuition. In addition, as of Fall 2007, students are limited to no more than SIX total course withdrawals throughout their education career at a Texas public college or university, or they will not get a degree. To help students avoid having to drop/withdraw from any calss, HCC has instituted an Early Alert process by which your professor will "alert" you and Distance Education (DE) counselors that you might fail a class because of excessive absences and/or poor academic performance. Contact your DE professor regarding your academic performance or a DE counselor to learn about what, if any, HCC interventions might be available to assit you - online tutoring, child care, financial aid, job placement, etc. - to stay in class and improve your academic performance. You can withdraw yourself at : https://hccsaweb.hccs.edu:8080/psp/csprd/?cmd=login&languagecd=eng. If you don't withdraw before the deadline, you will receive the grade that you have earned by the end of the semester. Zero's will be averaged for the required assignments not submitted. Deadline: November 18, 2010 by pm. Students who require testing accommodations need to schedule an appointment for testing to ensure that staff will be available for proctoring and to arrange for any adaptive equipment that may be required. Students should contact the distance education instructor's "Instructional Support Specialist" (ISS) the week prior to each exam throughout the semester to confirm that the requested testing accommodations will be met. If you need assistance in determining you instructor's ISS, please contact your instructor or the Distance Education Counselors for assistance.

DISTANCE EDUCATION ADVISING AND COUNSELING SERVICES: Advising can be accomplished by telephone at 713.718.5275 - option #, via email at de.counseling@hccs.edu, by visiting the Distance Education Office at the HCC Administration Building, 3100 Main Street, 3rd floor and/or by on-site advising at other HCC locations upon request. Confidential sessions with the distance education counselors will help students understand admissions, registration, entrance testing requirements, degree planning, transfer issues, and career counseling. Houston Community College counselors also maintain a local referral base in order to provide appropriate referals to students with personal or family issues tha may require longterm solutions. INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS: Receiving a W in a course may affect the status of your student Visa. Once a W is given for the course, it will not be changed to an F because of the visa consideration.
