SRI RAMACHANDRA UNIVERSITY-INTERNAL QUALITY ASSURANCE CELL (SRU-IQAC) EXECUTIVE SUMMARY OF ANNUAL QUALITY ASSURANCE REPORT, Plan of Action envisaged by the IQAC for the year In tune with the Vision and Mission of Sri Ramachandra University to contribute in the areas of Education, Healthcare and Research, Sri Ramachandra University embarked on the quality sustenance and quality enhancement activities after the NAAC accreditation at A (CGPA- 3.52) level in 2009. As per the 10-point multi-dimensional quality enhancement plan proposed by Sri Ramachandra University in section-a of the AQAR-, the SRU-IQAC assessed and analysed the quality-criteria based activities carried out during the year as delineated in section-b. Curricular Innovations: Followed by the successful implementation of the Integrated Curriculum for MBBS course with Problem based learning, the methodology has been introduced for BDS dental students to improve their clinical skills by adopting participatory teaching-learning methods. Introduction of e-learning in Nursing education, conduction of rapid review nursing course for the post graduate nursing students have been the quality addition in curriculum development and their delivery. Similar Rapid Review courses were conducted for all clinical PG courses of the university. CME credit point system has been introduced in the university for all the continuous education programmes. The new, innovative courses introduced during -2011 are: M.D.(Sports Medicine), M.D.(Immuno-hematology & Transfusion Medicine), M.D.(T.B & Pulmonary Medicine), M.P.H (Master of Public Health) and Diploma in Tuberculosis &Chest Diseases. Through an MOU with University of Miami, the online CITI- Research Ethics Education programme has been launched and has been made mandatory for all clinical researchers and Ph.D students. Faculty Development Programs and Professional upgradation: The medical college conducted 3 basic course workshops for 73 faculty members and 1 coordinator workshop for 12 faculty members. The Dental college organised Dental Education Technologies for 25 faculty members. The Pharmacy college conducted 1 FDP for 22 faculties. 3

Total no. of CME s, Workshops, Conferences & Seminars of National and International nature, conducted during the academic year -11 were 103, 112, 45 and 115 respectively. 114 faculty members were sponsored for attending conferences at national and international level A total of 71 teaching faculty & 946 non-teaching faculty were promoted in the year and 80 staff got their probations declared in the year -11 in line with the Service Bye-laws of the University. Systemized Feedback from Stake holders: The institutional feedback system included a structured proforma-based methodology used for receiving feedback from students, parents, employees and patients of the hospital attached to the Medical college. Periodic comprehensive student evaluation is sent to parents regularly. Alumni and the employers who select the students in campus interviews also provided constructive suggestions.. The pattern of feed back from patients as depicted graphically in the report in a novel way of improving healthcare services of the university. Honors/Awards to the faculty: 15 faculty members received national honors, 20 received state honors and 9 members were awarded with institute honors. Some of them include, Dr.B.C. Roy Award, Padmasri award etc., Office Automation and e-governance: The University & hospital administration and the examination systems have fully computerized for the smooth conduct of day to day functioning of these units. Development of the SRU-e-governance portal to bring about paper-less administration has been initiated in the university and will be fully operational during 2011-2012. All the 2400 non-teaching and technical staff of the university & hospital are being trained on-campus in IT skills suiting to their requirements utilizing the services of professional agency. Financial aid to students: The University offers 8 Chancellor s research fellowships every year for students to pursue their Ph.D. programme and an aid of Rs.13.44 lakhs were granted for -2011. 5 students of MBBS are given a grant of Rs.3,00,000/- per student to pursue their internship at Harvard University, USA. The Indian council of Medical research has provided the TSS fellowships for the third consecutive year and five junior resident fellowships were sanctioned for - 2011. These are in addition to the sponsored research-project based JRFs and other fellows. 4

The university also provides fee waiver to students of ward-secretary course and to those of economically weaker category. Library: 2789 books & 50 new journals were added to the library in the year -11 and 355 CD Roms/DVDs are purchased in the current year (-11) to strengthen the already available 1925 CD Roms/DVD s in the archives of the library to facilitate the experiential learning practices of the students. Strengthening of Infrastructure and technology upgradation: The infrastructure facilities of the Central research facility, Centre for Toxicology and Experimental Research, University departments and the hospital has been further upgraded with additional buildings, equipments and furnitures. Biometric system has been introduced at vital facilities in the university to enhance security issues. The university has subscribed for the National Knowledge connectivity (NKN) and the system will become operational during 2011-2012. Research Projects: The number of ongoing projects funded by National & International agencies like DST, DBT, LSRB, DIHAR, DRDO, ICMR, AYUSH, WHO, INDO-US, SHELL Foundation, USA are 42 and amounts to 14.16 crores whereas 15 projects were completed during this year. Two Indian Patents were filled one in association with Pharma Industry M/s. Arvind Remedies and the other with Central Leather Research Institute. About 6 collaborative research projects were initiated in the year and are underway. 5 fellowships sponsored by ICMR/TSS for MD/MS Ph.D integrated program, and 8 SRU Chancellor fellowship were sanctioned. 12 staff from health science colleges registered for Ph.D course in the year. About 64 students across the colleges received Best paper award/best scientsist / Best PG dissertation award from various seminars and conferences. Mentoring programme has been introduced for holistic moulding of the students by faculty members. Four MOUs were signed with National/International universities/institutions and one industry for educational and research collaboration. Publication Analysis: The Research publications made by the faculty members during the year -2011were analysed through 5 database viz. Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, Pubmed and Google scholar. Of the 324 publicationa made during the report period, 66 were cited by Scopus,174 5

by Google scholar, 112 by Web of Science, 62 by Pubmed and 66 by Embase. The h index has increased from 17 to 20 in the year. Health Care Services: Sri Ramachandra University Hospital caters to preventive and tertiary care through OP/IP services. 750 beds are set apart for free services of this teaching hospital for eligible patients of low socio-economic status. Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre has all super speciality services including transplantation services besides several speciality related surgical services. It is identified as a Govt.of Tamilnadu approved centre to provide specialized surgical treatment for people below poverty line under the Tamilnadu Government (Kalaignar) Insurance Scheme for life saving surgeries. Genereal health check for all SRU employees above 40 years of age to commemorate the silver jubilee celebrations of SRMC & RI, Implementation of Sri Ramachandra Health Insurance Scheme (SRHIS) for both staff and students are some of the employee welfare schemes rendered in the year. SRMC has been accredited by Joint Commission Internationale, USA for international quality health care. The SRMC blood bank has been accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) in April, In view the above infrastructure/experts/quality strengths, SRMC has also become a major centre of Health Care for International patients. Out reach Activities: The department of the constitutent colleges are involved in conducting medical camps in rural areas, schools, Public health centres etc. Some of the major camps which took care for thousands of patients are those conducted at Rasipuram, Thiruvannamalai etc.,a total of 55 medical camps were conducted in the year -11. Co-curricular & Extra-curricular activities: The staff across the colleges of SRU took active part in various sports events like cricket, tennikoit, throwball, tennis, table tennis, volley ball, carrom at national, state and regional level and won prizes. Silver Jubilee celebrations & Schemes: marked the 25 years of existence of the Medical college (Sri Ramachandra Medical College & Research Institute) and 15 years completion of the Sri Ramachandra University, after it was conferred with the Deemed University status. The week-long celebration included 6

conduction of Symposia, invited lectures, conferences, quiz programme for students, health camps, honoring staff who completed 25 years, 20 years & 10 years of service at SRU etc., Coinciding with the Silver Jubiliee celebrations of SRMC & RI, several centres/schemes were launched like inauguration of Child Development Centre, SRU-Enterpreneurship Cell, SRU Sports Medicine Centre etc., Rotation of headships, introduction of book review programme by staff and students, Patient feedback analysis to augment quality health care are some of the novel academic and service-oriented schemes implemented during the year -11. Name of the Institution : Sri Ramachandra University Year of Report : 2011 Section A: Plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement. 1. Application of principles and procedures learned from implementation of integrated curriculum for MBBS to be applied in other faculties eg. Faculty of Dentistry. 2. More live programs such as Research Ethics in collaboration with CITI University of Miami to be made available for other regional parties in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Malaysia etc. 3. Increasing the facilities in skills training laboratories by incorporating modern simulators and virtual learning facilities. 4. New Educational programs in Master of Public Health (Occupational Health) in collaboration with ICMR, MD in Chest Medicine and Sports Medicine are proposed. 5. Expansion of academic, hospital and other facilities for 250 MBBS intake and increased faculty (Infrastructure, faculty and other learning resources). 6. Clinical and Educational program on foot care in collaboration with University of Sal Ford, UK is being proposed by the department of Orthopaedics. 7. The scheme proposal to conduct the master health check-up for all the employees who are above 40 years of age absolutely free of cost which includes Blood Test, Ultra sound, Chest X-ray, ECG, Echo along with opinions from the entire specialists in order to take care of Sri Ramachandra family health care needs will be organized. 8. A grievance box has been placed in front of Chancellor s Office, to create access to the highest authority, by all the employees of the University. The issues will be dealt with confidentiality. 9. To qualitatively and quantitatively enhance the impact factor and citation index of the publication made by the faculty and researchers. 10. This vision is accomplished by: Initiating programs that meet the ever-new and challenging frontiers and ideas in education, healthcare and research. Delivering socially meaningful academic programs through integrated outreach components with special focus on addressing humanitarian considerations, thereby generating personnel competence for rehabilitative and preventive health services, nursing and other allied health care services, basic science, clinical and applied research and support services for health care delivery. Improving hands on skill training through well-established laboratories equipped with modern simulators and virtual learning facilities. Utilizing ICT resources installed to maintain state of the art technological advances in all courses. Facilitating research and development in partnership with academic institutions, industries and funding agencies through the Central Research Facility. Promoting research ethics through collaborative programs with CITI University. Availing resources for promoting education and research through national and international networks activated by Memorandum Of Understanding with various agencies. Adopting challenging and technology based medical and surgical methods to impart quality care to the society in the medical center and hospital. Intended for Phase 3 students Sem 6, 7, 8 students Duration of the course 40 weeks / 80 hours of small group discussion The session will be conducted for 2 hours per week on Wednesdays and Thursdays Teaching method Small group Discussion Description of course This is a program designed to enhance the problem solving ability and self directed learning of the medical student. The students are challenged with health related problems within the context of a case. The case is presented to them in parts. Guided by the tutor (facilitator) and through discussions among them, students establish the learning objectives for each problem and then commit to independent study. When they regroup for discussion they apply their self-acquired knowledge to the patient s problem and use their clinical reasoning and decision-making skills to solve it and meet their learning objectives. Small group discussions encourage students to work as a team and self directed learning helps them to solve the health problem by an evidence based approach. Faculty Faculty facilitators were chosen across the institution; and were made to undergo a training workshop on conducting a PBL session and on effective facilitation of a small group. Resources A compendium of resources were provided to the faculty for the course including tutor guide for each session. Student Assessment The students will be assessed by formative and summative assessments and a periodic feedback given to them. The assessment will be included in the final internal assessment. Feedback and evaluation The course will be closely watched by the Program director and feedback obtained both from student and faculty at the end of each session. The students learn clinical skills in a structured step manner in small groups on standardized patients, models, manikins etc. They also learn to respond to clinical problems and apply their skills to solve them by simulations. Guided by the clinical skill demonstrators (facilitator) students meet the learning objectives. Small group demonstration and skill performance allows close monitoring of students and an objective assessment of skill acquisition. Research projects a) Ongoing; b) Completed Detailed year wise analysis of the projects sanctioned revealed that, out of total 192 projects sanctioned for the period (1998 ), 13 projects were sanctioned in the year. Eventhough the grant rate received by SRU faculty is only 763.24 lakhs in the year when compared to 928.24 lakhs in the year 2009, the revenue generated through research projects sanctioned in the year is found to be Rs. 3921.79 lakhs when compared to Rs.3158.55 lakhs only in the year 2009. 20

Community Medicine School health programme was organized by Department of Community Medicine at MKM Matriculation Higher secondary school, Mugalivakkam on 25 th November. Faculty of Pharmacy School of Nursing Faculty of Physiotherapy Sri Ramachandra University has entered into a Public-Private Partnership alliance as per the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) initiative with the Government of Tamilnadu as a donor to the Patient Welfare Societies of 2 Primary Health Centers at Nemam and Mugalivakkam from the month of September 2008. Specialists Services at each of the above Primary Health Centres are being provided as per the schedule on fixed days every month. A number of patients examined in Specialty Clinics in the Primary Health Centres Mugalivakkam and Nemam during the period between March to Dec. Pharm D (Post Baccalaureate) students participated in the health camps conducted by the Department of Ophthalmology, SRU, at various places in and around, in the months of February and March 2011. M.Pharm (Pharmacy Practice) and Pharm D (Post Baccalaureate) students provided drug information services to all health care professionals of the hospital and students of various departments of SRU through the Drugs and Poisons Information Center. The Center has received and answered 224 queries during the period of April 2011. The M.Pharm (Pharmacy Practice), Pharm D and Pharm D (Post Baccalaureate) students provide patient education for ambulatory and in-house patients of the Sri Ramachandra Medical Center and Hospital. The B. Pharm and M. Pharm students have donated blood for the needy at various occasions. Annual checkup was done for all the students took part in the pulse polio programme organized by GOVT in the month of January and February 2011 in Nemam, Adambakkam, Alandur and Mugalivakkam PHC. Courses in which students assessment of teachers were introduced and the action taken based on the students feedback The university has a policy to get feedbacks from the students regarding the overall performance of the teachers, in terms of their knowledge, skills, commitment towards teaching and their responsibilities. The Faculty are given opportunity to improve their performance based on the feedbacks obtained. The faculty who require improvement are counseled by their concerned heads of the department. Methodology: 48

To identify the possible hindering factors, the university authorities carefully designed an instrument to collect the information from the students on different aspects and their functioning in the university. This included five domains of information i.e. about the Course, Faculty, Assessments, Facilities available and Future involvement of students with the university. The responses were collected on a five point scale as poor, average, good, very good and excellent. Students were at liberty to mark their responses, and the data collected was analyzed by an independent evaluator and the identity of the students were not revealed. This kind of unbiased information was collected from different courses of the university (medical, dental, paramedical, and allied health sciences). The data collected were entered in Microsoft excel format and then analyzed by SPSS software for detailed information. First, the percent responses to each of the five point scale was calculated for all the courses and tabulated. Then five point scale was further reduced to three point grades as high, medium and low for easy understanding of the responses given by the students without losing any details or information (poor and average were graded as low, good as medium and very good and excellent as high); this was converted into a line graphs presentation of each domain with a mean line to check how each response and the respective domain were progressing across the selected courses. The details are placed confidentially in the archives of the Dean s office. In the Medical College the students feedback is obtained through their learning orientation in the integrated Curriculum in Phases I & II. Postgraduates feedback is got at the departmental level and used for improvements. In all the other colleges the feedback is got from the students at the end of each semester / year through questionnaire, which carries various aspects of teaching, learning and curriculum design. ICT is deployed in all the university activities such as administration including maintenance of accounts, admissions, library services and examinations. The software required for the above mentioned departments is developed inhouse by the experts. Administration: Database of staff profiles (Teaching & Non-teaching) the day-to-day activities such as maintenance of leave letters, sanction of facilities offered for staffs, staff selection, salary payment, maintenance of accounts are practised in all administrative work. Admission: The conduct of common entrance examination, declaration of results, selection of students for different courses through counseling and maintenance of student profile, disbursement of their scholarship are executed through a database. Faculty of Pharmacy The Alumni Association of Sri Ramachandra College of Pharmacy had organized two guest lectures for the B. Pharm final year and M. Pharm students. The first speaker was Mr. Mohan Chakraborthy, an alumnus (1998-1999 batch), a registered pharmacist in USA. He spoke on Opportunities for Pharmacy graduates in USA on 13/9/. The second lecture was given by Mr. C.U. Balaji Prakash, an alumnus (2001-2002 batch), working as a Research executive, Production R&D, Orchid health care,, on the topic Career oppurtunities in pharmacy on 19/3/2011 at Faculty of Pharmacy, SRU. The Alumni Association of Sri Ramachandra College of Pharmacy conducted two executive committee meetings during the year - 2011 on 24/8/ and 14/3/2011 and an Annual General Body meeting on 25/3/2011 in which around 50 alumni attended. Dept. of Biotechnology Conducted the 4 th Alumni meet on 23 rd Sep. during the Silver Jubilee Celebrations- on the Theme: Biotechnology for Safe Health and Secure Environment. School of Nursing It is planned to conduct Alumini association activities on 12 th May in collaboration with College of Nursing. Dept. of Pedodontics Steps taken to initiate the program 32. Activities and support from the Parent-Teacher Association Periodic Parent-Teacher Meetings are arranged across the courses. Regular feedback on the course, infrastructure, examination systems are obtained and suggestions given by the parents are scrutinized implemented immediately. To mention a few. School of Nursing : Parent-Teacher meet was conducted on 05.03.2011 to emphasize the poor performance of their wards and the benefits which are available in Sri Ramachandra campus. There was a good response from the parents (Attendance 100%). Dept. of Speech Language & Hearing Science obtained feedback through STUSTAT Questionnaire from their students regarding the involvement of faculty in academic and clinical blocks, infrastructure, facilities of the university, etc. Dept. of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology gathered contact address of the students and compeled them for perusal by the staff members. Health Services SRMC was identified as a center to provide specialized surgical treatment for people below poverty line under Kalaignar insurance Scheme for Lifesaving Surgeries by the Tamil Nadu Government. More than 1500 patients have been benefited under the scheme. SRMC Blood Bank has been accredited by AABB (American Association of Blood Banks) in April,. This is the only blood bank in the country to receive international accreditation. (Annexure 1) A state of the art Liver Transplant Unit started functioning and has successfully carried out liver transplant operations. Under Tamil Nadu State Illness Assistance Society Scheme, 450 patients have been benefitted. International Patient Care: The Medical Center has treated 259 international patients last year. This includes patients from 20 nationalities: Oman, Iraq, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Bangladesh, Australia, France, Canada, USA, UK, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, Maldives and Korea etc. General Health Check was carried out for all the employees above 40 years of age to commemorate the Silver Jubilee Celebrations of SRMC & RI. Remaining students are pursuing their job in insurance companies like star health insurance. Students are placed in various hospitals in India and Bhutan.18% students were placed in hospitals and 36 students were pursuing their higher studies. Out of 15 M.Sc (SLH) students 40% pursuing their job in hospitals like Ms. Ambani Hospitals, Mumbai, GSM hospitals, Varanasi. Another 40% students are working as lecturer in various colleges like in Sri Ramachandra University, AVMC, Pondicherry. 20% of the students are pursuing their higher studies. Out of 20 B.Sc SLH students, 65% of students are pursuing their higher studies and 25% of students are working in hospitals. Out of 56 B.Pharm students graduated in April, 95% of the students are pursuing their masters program in various universities and colleges in India and abroad. Only 5% of the students opted for placements. Those students were guided properly and arranged for suitable post in the various Pharma companies such as Nestle India Ltd., Mumbai, Hospira India Ltd,, Orchid Chemicals,. M. The Founder s Day celebration commenced on the 19 th Sept and the Silver Jubilee Celebrations continued for a fortnight, culminating in scintillating function on 5 th October. 36 staffs who have completed 25 years of service, 336 staffs who have completed 20 years of service and 42 staffs who have completed 10 years of service at Sri Ramachandra University ( a total of 414 staffs both from College and Hospital) were honoured by our Chancellor. Rose Day: The Dept. of Pediatrics and Pediatric Hemato-Oncology organized the Rose Day Celebration on 27 th September. Our Chancellor, Shri. V.R. Venkataachalam presided over the function. Padmashree Kamal Hassan was the chief guest for the day and distributed roses to children treated for cancer. The dance performance and song presented by the children were well appreciated. A strong message was sent out regarding the medical and financial needs of these children and how contributions towards this could be used effectively. The Center for Women s Advancement organized a lecture on Women & Economic Prosperity. The speaker was Dr. Ambiga Devi Anbazhagan, Professor of Economics, Avinashilingam University for Women, Coimbatore. She emphasized on the role of women in improving the economic status of society, the importance of entrepreneurship qualities in women and their present day placements in the industry. Dept. of Psychiatric Nursing celebrated World Mental Health Day on 22 nd Oct. Nursing students exhibited models on the theme Promote Well Being: Mental Health & Physical Illness and prizes were awarded to three best models. Games were also conducted for the patients. Faculty of Physiotherapy observed World Physiotherapy Day on 8 th Sep. A CPE on Stroke Management was organized. Oration What should be our perspectives about the future of India? on 21 st Aug. Lamp Lighting and Graduation Ceremony of the School & Faculty of Nursing was held on 23 rd Nov. The chief guest was Dr. R. Swaminathan, I.A.S, Former Secretary, Asian Development Bank. The 5 th Anniversary of Cochlear Implant Program was organized by the Dept. of ENT, Head & Neck Surgery and Dept. of SLHS on 20 th Jan 2011. Shri. V. Jagannathan, CMD of Star Health & Allied Insurance was the chief guest. English Language Laboratory was inaugurated on 7 th Jan 2011. This lab is equipped with English learning software installed in the systems to enable effective learning. Endocrinology: Resource person in the Nodal centre Faculty Development Workshop and delivered a talk on Bringing principles of Integration in Medical Education at Medical Education Unit on 18 th Jan 2011. World Health Day was celebrated by the Dept. of Community Medicine on 7 th April. The theme was Urbanization & Health. The Chancellor Research Fellowships and Bristol Myers Squib Research Fellowships, common Ph.D. entrance examination was conducted in SRU on 10 th April. 55 candidates attended. Dept. of Pediatrics observed the World Asthma Day on 4 th and a PG Symposium on Childhood Asthma was organized. Around 50 delegates attended. An Asthma screening camp was organized from 3 rd to 7 th May. 76 Children were screened. DRDO Research Projects Review Committee Meeting was held on 21 st & 22 nd May. Six on-going projects, nine revised projects & four new project proposals were reviewed. The 13 th Convocation was held on 26 th March 2011 at the University Auditorium. Prof. K. Srinath Reddy, President, National Board of Examinations & President, Public Health Foundation of India, was the Chief Guest. World Optometry Day Oculus 11 was celebrated by the Department of Ophthalmology and Optometry on 19 th and 22 nd March 2011. The events included free Amblyopia screening camp for nursery children, painting & rangoli competitions, Quiz, Optometry exhibition on Amblyopia and Puppet Show on awareness of amblyopia. 77

Section C: Outcomes achieved by the end of the year The University with a vision to set quality benchmark in various academic and administrative activities and to fulfill the needs of the society, stakeholders in Health Care, Education & Research, the following were carried out. 1. Application of principles and procedures learned from implementation of integrated curriculum for MBBS to be applied in other faculties eg. Dental, has been implemented. 2. More live programs such as Research Ethics in collaboration with CITI University of Miami to be made available for other regional parties in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Malaysia etc were started. 3. Increasing the facilities in skills training laboratories by incorporating modern simulators and virtual learning facilities. 4. New Educational programs in Master of Public Health (Occupational Health) in collaboration with ICMR, MD Chest Medicine and Sports Medicine has been started. 5. Expansion of academic and hospital facilities for 250 MBBS intake and increased facility such as Infrastructure, faculty and other learning resources were carried out. 6. Clinical and Educational program on foot care in collaboration with University of Sal ford, UK is carried out by the Orthopedic department. 7. Master health check-up scheme for all the employees who are above 40 years of the age absolutely free of cost which included Blood Test, Ultra sound, Chest X-ray, ECG, Echo and the opinions from the entire specialists, so that the Sri Ramachandra families health care needs will be up taken care of, has been conducted. 8.
