NWEA MAP SKILLS: THE SCORES ARE IN...NOW WHAT?! CMSD MAP Skills Workshop 9.27.17
Agenda The data is in MAP Skills What it is / what it isn't Skills Locator Instructional Resources Mastery Check Tracking Student Progress NWEA Student Profile Report Comparisons Section Instructional Areas Section Growth Goals Section MAP Skills - Student View
After the Fall MAP Growth Testing Window NWEA reports explain: Individual Student Outcomes [ Student Profile Report / Student Progress ] What are they ready to learn? How have they grown since the last MAP assessment? How does their progress compare to others at the same (weeks of instruction / starting RIT)? What kind of growth in their readiness to learn have others shown when tested again in Winter / Spring?
After the Fall MAP Growth Testing Window NWEA reports explain: Class outcomes [ Class Breakdown by Goal / Achievement Status & Growth / Learning Continuum ] How did the class do as a whole when compared to the District? Norms? How wide is the range of performance across subject goal areas? Which groups of students have similar performance in each subject goal? How are students performing in terms of individual achievement? Individual growth? Which learning statements best describe each student s comprehension based on RIT?
After the Fall MAP Growth Testing Window NWEA reports explain: Grade / School / District outcomes [ Grade Report / Student Growth Summary Report / District Summary Report ] How did the grades as a whole perform compared to the District? Norms? How wide is the range of performance across subject goal areas? How did grades / schools grow vs projections? How many students met / exceeded individual growth projections?

MAP Skills - Purpose MAP Skills is designed for the following purposes: Identifying missing foundational skills and/or instructional reading level MAP Skills locator tests indicate what skills students know and are ready to learn and provide a learning path for moving forward Assigning open educational resources to support instruction Curated online instructional resources to help teachers differentiate instruction Checking for skill mastery or independent reading level Monitoring progress using a mastery model of progress monitoring MAP Skills can be used as a tool to monitor progress in Response to Intervention (RTI) programs
Student Use Cases MAP Skills was designed for readers, students who are reading to learn, with these intended uses: Remediation: Students in grades 3-12 who have skill deficits in the K-8 range. Reading comprehension passages at lower reading levels were selected to be age appropriate for a grade 3+ audience. On level: Students in grades 3-8. Mastery checks can be used prior to instruction as a preassessment of skills, as part of a summative assessment, or to check for retention of skills. Skills locator tests can be given beginning at grade level as appropriate. Enrichment: Students who can read up through grade 7. Teachers can find appropriate above grade level skills that build logically on skills students already know. Grades K-7 with audio supports*
MAP Skills Theory of Action Targeted supports for accelerated learning Students needing more instruction Normal Instructional Supports Students able to learn new material Resources for independent learning Students with higher grade skills Zone of Proximal Development

MAP Skills What is it? MAP Skills (SN) is designed to be used as a progress monitor, as defined by the National Center on Intensive Intervention SN is a Mastery Measurement that tracks individual skills as students master them SN can use MAP RIT scores and identified Instructional Area / Goal Area scores to target missing skills for each student Appropriate for Grades 3 8; HS remediation; Gifted programming MAP Skills is not an Instructional Content Provider product (eg. Compass Learning; Study Island; iready etc.) MAP Skills is not appropriate for use as a screening tool
MAP Skills How it works Teacher view: Manage passwords; Assign missions; view skill achievement; track progress Skills Locator uncovers gaps in skills underlying a low RIT score; you can search for 1 5 skills per mission (10 20 minutes) Assign Resources use activities curated by Knovation; can limit to Needs Work skills; can enter url of a preferred resource Mastery Check verifies student progress; Mastered = 5 correct / Needs Work = 2 incorrect Student view: go on missions give feedback - collect rewards
Tracking Student Progress 'Donut' chart gives a class view of the skill level by strand 'Heat Map' chart helps pinpoint where students need to focus, what they've mastered and the grade level of their skills attainment Student progress chart gives the number of skills located and progressed over time; can also be used to mark when interventions have been applied Assignments tab / MAP Skills can identify the next logical step in skills development by strand based on previous results. You can follow the SN suggestion via Ready For card or tailor to match the instruction curriculum planned
MAP Skills: Class Dashboard Choose Class & Subject. Instructional Area optional Donut Graphs for each Strand appear after Skills Locator missions completed
Monitoring Progress Class Level Heat map shows specific student skills and identifies the lowest needs work skill in a strand Donut graphs show skills for each strand
Monitoring Progress Individual Student Goal set of all skills in a strand. Change default number of skills and timing as appropriate Document interventions

e test that were answered too quickly for a student to have applied effortful behavior to answer the question. Student Profile Report: Disengagement Percentage of disengaged responses: The percentage of items on the test that were answered too quickly for a student to have applied effortful behavior to answer the question. Estimated impact of disengagement on RIT: Shows how many RIT points higher the student might have scored if they had been fully engaged. For example, with a RIT score of 231 and an estimated impact of - 2, the student might have the potential to score 233 if they were fully engaged during testing.
Student Profile: Comparisons Norms Percentile color coding matches the score tab Uses the NWEA 2015 Norms Study Ohio s State Tests projected proficiency for the subject - based on NWEA 2016 Linking Study ACT College Readiness For grades 5-9; both ACT 22 and more stringent ACT 24

Skills Locator Missions Students who have already taken Locators & have Needs Work Skills have resources identified by Skills Nav View assignment details and name assignment for easier tracking MAP Skills will identify students ready for Locator missions. Missions customized to starting RIT You don t have to assign all Skills Locators at once. You could select the strands that are pertinent to current instruction
Manually Assigning Skills Locator Strand pre-identified Default locates 3 skills Name the Assignment for easy reference; set due date; add note to student
Manually Assigning Resources Once Locator missions identify needs work skills, you can focus on resources only for those skills Select resources curated by Knovation or add your own instructional resource url
Manually Assign Mastery Check Choose up to 5 skills to be tested. This will affect the length of the mission
Student Login: skillsnav.mapnwea.org Four Mission Centers match the subjects in Teacher s Skills Nav login Students can see their own progress and check for new missions
Student View Students can see all that they ve achieved and what skill is next to unlock. They are notified when they ve Leveled Up (passed) a skill
Next Steps back in your classroom What data points will be used to get started? Which specific / manageable content area will be the first target? What MAP Skills tools will be used first? E.g. Locator to inform learning center content? Mastery, to capture pre/post-instruction skill levels? When will results be discussed / shared? Grade level team meetings? Professional Learning Community team meetings? Parent / Teacher meetings? What adjustments to instruction will be made based on results? What is the next content area to be addressed?
