Suggested Schedules, Curriculum Breakdown, and Cost Estimates The following curriculum breakdown and cost overview is provided to assist schools in understanding what they would need for teaching Logic of English, what they might want to teach in each grade, and the approximate cost. Sample cost estimates, based on one class with twenty-five students, are provided for each grade and scheduling option, with separate reusable and consumable product costs. Other components can be taught in any grade but will not need to be taught every year once a school has transitioned to Logic of English. These foundational skills should be taught to mastery to all students, rather than at a specific grade level, so the deciding factor in planning a schedule should be the needs and ability level of the students in your school. The following suggestions are based on what has worked well for other public, private, and home schools. Logic of English Curriculum Breakdown and Estimate Updated March 2015 Notes on Logic of English Curriculum Foundations is a complete language arts program designed for children in pre-k through first or second grade. Over the course of four levels, it teaches phonemic awareness, all the basic phonograms and spelling rules needed for decoding 98% of English words, handwriting, and beginning spelling. The instruction, playful exercises, and active learning games are designed for young children, and the primary emphasis is on developing fluent readers. We recommend starting Foundations in kindergarten and teaching it over the course of two or three years. Foundations A can also be started in Pre-K. Learn more: www.logicofenglish.com/foundations Essentials teaches linguistically accurate phonics, spelling, vocabulary, and basic grammar and composition, and it is designed for students age 7 to adult. Since the tools taught apply to all English words and the lessons and exercises are designed to suit a variety of ages, it can be taught in any elementary grade in which spelling instruction is needed, or at any age if spelling or reading remediation is needed. Optional advanced spelling lists for each lesson allow teachers to differentiate instruction for older students by supplementing or replacing the basic list in the teacher s manual with intermediate and advanced words. It uses a multi-sensory, rhythmic, stroke-based approach to teach cursive or manuscript handwriting. Handwriting instruction is built into Foundations and does not need to be purchased separately for that level. To teach handwriting with Essentials, start Rhythm of Handwriting while completing the Essentials Before You Begin section. When when students can write the lowercase letters fluidly and legibly and have mastered the skills in Before You Begin, begin Essentials Lesson 1. Complete the remaining Rhythm of Handwriting lessons simultaneously. Learn more: www.logicofenglish.com/handwriting Notes on Transitioning Your School First Grade In a transition year, first grade students should start with Foundations A or B, depending on their level of handwriting, phonics, and phonemic awareness preparation. Students who have learned all the sounds of the A-Z phonograms, have strong phonemic awareness and can blend and segment auditorily, are able to write the lowercase letters comfortably and legibly, and can read unfamiliar CVC words correctly should start Foundations at level B. Levels C and D assume knowledge of the spelling rules, multi-letter phonograms, decoding skills, and handwriting taught in previous levels and build systematically on them, so they do not work as starting points. In subsequent years, students who have mastered the content in level B in kindergarten may start C in first grade after a review of this material. Levels C and D build systematically on content taught in B and will not work as starting points. Essentials and Foundations B start at similar places in terms of what prior knowledge is required, and teach similar content. Essentials moves faster, goes deeper and further, and places a greater emphasis on spelling mastery, vocabulary, and grammar, so it will be the better choice if most incoming second graders are reading on or near grade level and ready to focus more on spelling. Foundations focuses more on reading fluency, while laying the groundwork for spelling, so it may be a better choice if many incoming second graders are struggling readers or are weak in basic language skills. Upper Elementary We recommend teaching Essentials in every upper elementary grade in the transition year. This equips the older students with linguistically accurate and complete knowledge of how written English works, fosters stronger decoding and spelling skills, and strengthens critical thinking about language as they move towards secondary education. Teaching Essentials also enables 4th-6th grade teachers to understand why English words are spelled the way they are, equipping them to reinforce and review this material with future students. Once students have completed Essentials and reviewed the content a second year for mastery, they will have learned all the tools needed to read and spell English words and will need only to reinforce and apply them with new words, so their primary focus can be on reading and writing. The Annual Classroom License is per teacher per year, and each licensed teacher is permitted to print the book as needed for his or her students for one year. PDFs are recommended primarily for schools using the books digitally, especially with Foundations, both because of the value of staff time and because printing costs often exceed the price of printed workbooks. Essentials workbooks are over 400 pages, and Foundations workbooks are 200 to 300 fullcolor, image-rich pages. Annual Classroom Licenses can be renewed for each and are priced at five times the printed product cost. They range from $30 (Spelling Journal) to $90 (Workbooks) per teacher per year. Additional Children s Literature One significant cost in teaching Foundations D is the children s literature used in the program. This is a vital component of the program, because students have learned all the phonograms and spelling rules they need for decoding and can spend lots of time improving fluency and comprehension through reading We have worked to select a variety of high-quality children s literature, including beloved classics and some newer titles, to use in the program. Every child needs to be able to use a copy individually for reading practice; we recommend that schools concerned about cost purchase enough for children to use in one section or reading group at a time the first year and then add to their set in future years.
