You will find this information on the College of Law s website at http://www.law.stetson.edu/jdgrado. 2. This application contains four parts: Part 1 Application Checklist ; Part 2 Faculty Recommendation Form ; Part 3 Participation Agreement ; and Part 4 Acknowledgement of Responsibility and Liability Waiver. You must complete and submit the materials associated with all four parts to the College of Law s Office of International Programs no later than January 15 of your first year at Stetson University College of Law. 3. Make sure that you possess a valid passport and other acceptable travel documents to go overseas. Neither university is not responsible for obtaining a student visa for you, but will provide documents you may need to apply for a student visa. 4. As a J.D./Grado student, you are required to pay the regular tuition and administrative fees (as identified in the J.D./Grado Program policy posted on the College of Law s website at http://www.law.stetson.edu/jdgrado) to Stetson University College of Law. You should expect to pay for food, housing, travel, books, and other expenses yourself. You may be eligible to apply for federal financial aid to cover at least some of the expenses associated with attending the J.D./Grado Program. Please consult Stetson Law s Office of Admissions and Student Financial Planning for more specific information. 5. Application Checklist Please complete and submit all of the items below to the Office of International Programs no later than January 15 of your first year at Stetson University College of Law. Acceptance to Stetson University College of Law as a full-time J.D. student (you do not need to submit anything for this item; the Office of International Programs will verify your status with the Office of Admissions and Student Financial Planning and/or Registrar s Office). Completed and signed supplemental application submitted to the International Programs Office by no later than January 15 of your first year. Law school transcript, if you are a currently enrolled as a J.D. student. Copies of pages of your passport reflecting your name, photo, passport number, passport date of issue, and passport date of expiration. An essay, not to exceed 1,500 words, explaining why you want to study overseas and participate in the J.D./Grado program. Please submit this essay in both English and Spanish. You should write the essay yourself and should not have sought assistance in writing or editing either the English or Spanish version. Two letters of recommendation. At least one letter should be from a full-time member of the Stetson University College of Law faculty. Please use the attached forms. Part 3. Participation Agreement (Stetson University College of Law Students) Should I be selected, I accept placement in Stetson University College of Law/University of Granada s J.D./Grado Program. The period for my study-abroad placement are specified in the acceptance letter I have received from Stetson. I further agree with Stetson as follows: 1. I must obtain advance written approval of all courses and load requirements from Stetson s Associate Dean for Academics. I also must obtain advance written approval of any subsequent course changes from Stetson s Associate Dean for Academics. If I do not obtain the proper advance, written approvals, Stetson may not recognize the unapproved courses as part of the J.D./Grado Program. 2. I will have the status of degree student at both Stetson and the host institution. I agree to take the required courses and classes, and undergo such examinations and tests, as required by Granada and Stetson. I understand that some, if not all, examinations in Granada will be oral. 3. Each semester, I must request that the institution at which I am studying send academic records directly to the other institution. 4. I will conduct myself in strict accordance with relevant regulations (policies, including the Academic Integrity Code and Code of Student Professionalism and Conduct) as stipulated by Stetson and in compliance with the policies, rules, and regulations prescribed by the host institution. 5. My placement at the host institution and participation in the J.D./Grado program may be terminated if I fail to remain enrolled as a full-time student, fail to maintain minimum academic standards as defined by Stetson and Granada, or am found in violation of laws, regulations, or policies of either university or any relevant jurisdiction in the U.S., Spain, or the European Union. Termination may carry the same financial obligations as a withdrawal. 6. If my placement, or participation is terminated by me, or either university, I may be required to reimburse Stetson for any scholarships and/or expenses paid on my behalf. 7. My placement will be limited to the period specified in my acceptance letter. An extension request is subject to approval in writing by both Stetson and Granada. 6
8. I will inform Stetson s Office of International Programs immediately if I am unable to participate in the Program after having signed this Agreement. 9. I will take part in all aspects of the Program, including any Orientation, Post-Return Debriefing, and Evaluation sessions as required. 10. I understand and agree that my academic and personal records will be forwarded to the host institution and may be shared between Stetson and the host institution to effectuate my participation in this Program. I also understand and consent to the disclosure of information to my designated emergency contact person if qualifying safety or emergency situations arise warranting such disclosure, as determined by Stetson and/or my host institution in their sole discretion. 11. Each semester, I will provide Stetson s Registrar with my mailing and e-mail addresses, and a telephone number in the country in which I am studying that semester. I also agree to immediately update that information as it changes. 12. Part 4. Acknowledgement of Responsibility and Liability Waiver (Stetson University College of Law) WARNING: BY SIGNING THIS LEGAL DOCUMENT YOU GIVE UP CERTAIN LEGAL RIGHTS, INCLUDING THE RIGHT TO SUE. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY. In consideration of being permitted to conduct study at the University of Granada (Host Institution) in the J.D./Grado Program co-sponsored by Stetson University College of Law (Stetson), I agree as follows: Assumption of Risks: I understand that participating in the Program will take me away from the Stetson campus for approximately two years. During this period, I understand that I will be in unfamiliar surroundings and will be exposed to risks to my person and possessions. I understand that I may suffer physical injury, sickness or death, or damage to my property as a result of participating in the Program, and that there is a possibility of violence and crime, civil unrest, homesickness, and loneliness in Spain. I freely and voluntarily accept and assume all such risks, dangers and hazards. Accordingly, I understand that despite its efforts, Stetson may not be able to ensure my complete safety at all times from such risks and dangers. Assumption of Responsibility: I understand that it is my responsibility to abide by all applicable Stetson and host institution policies and laws of the host country, and to ensure that I have adequate medical, personal health, dental and accident insurance coverage, as well as protection of my personal possessions. More particularly, I appreciate Stetson does not carry accident or injury insurance for my benefit and that there may be certain matters for which I could be held at fault personally if the accompanying circumstances do not relate to or arise from my education or if my activities or conduct fall short of what would be considered a reasonable standard for an individual in my position. In these cases, I agree to be accountable in all respects for my own actions and not to ask Stetson or its employees to accept the consequences thereof; I also agree to be responsible for any claims made against Stetson in relation to such actions. I acknowledge that I have been advised by Stetson of these risks and dangers, and the need to act in a responsible manner at all times. My signature below is given freely to indicate my understanding of the acceptance of these realities and in consideration for being permitted by Stetson to participate in the Program. I recognize that Stetson will not supervise any of the host institution academic program living arrangements, or extracurricular activities during my participation in the Program. Liability Waiver: I release and hold harmless Stetson, its employees, students, and agents from any and all liability for any loss, damage, injury, or expense that I (or my next of kin) may suffer as a result of me participating in the Program, including, but not limited to, accidents, acts of God, war, civil unrest, sickness, transportation, scheduling, government restrictions or regulations, and any and all expenses which I may incur while participating in the Program. This waiver is effective for the period of time that I will be participating in the Program. I understand that this agreement 8
cannot be modified or interpreted except in writing by Stetson, and that no oral modification or interpretation will be valid. In the event of my death, this agreement will be effective and binding upon my heirs, next of kin, executors, administrators, and assigns. Accreditation Disclaimer: Stetson University College of Law is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges to award both J.D. and LL.M degrees. The University of Granada School of Law is not accredited by the Commission on Colleges and the accreditation of Stetson University College of Law does not extend to or include the University of Granada School of Law or its students. Although Stetson University College of Law accepts certain University of Granada School of Law course work in transfer, other colleges and universities may not accept this work in transfer. Venue: I agree that for any disputes arising between Stetson and me that in way relate to this Program or my participation in it, venue for such disputes will be in Pinellas County, Florida, United States.
