MINUTES WEST LAFAYETTE COMMUNITY SCHOOL CORPORATION 1130 N. Salisbury Street West Lafayette, Indiana REGULAR MEETING OF THE BOARD OF SCHOOL TRUSTEES Monday August 1, 2016 PRESENT: Mr. Alan R. Karpick; Dr. Karen S. Springer; Mr. Thomas H. Schott; Mr. Brain J. Bittner, Mrs. Rachel Witt; Mr. Douglas Masson; Mr. Ross Sloat; Mr. Robert C. Reiling, Jr.; and Dr. Rocky Killion Superintendent. EXCUSED: Mr. Bradley Marley President Karpick called the meeting to order at 6:36 P.M. I. ROUTINE BUSINESS A. A motion was made to approve the agenda for the Monday August 1, 2016, Regular Meeting of the Board of School Trustees. Motion by: Mrs. Witt Seconded by: Mr. Mason Vote: 6 of 6 B. A motion was made to approve the minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Board of School Trustees held on June 6, 2016. Motion by: Dr. Springer Seconded by: Mr. Schott Vote: 6 of 6 II. III. IV. REGULAR AGENDA A. Academic Achievement Staff Recognition Mr. Karpick recognized the following 2016 retirees for their service to the West Lafayette Community School Corporation. Mary Houser Teacher at Jr./Sr. High School, served 29 years with WLCSC Karen Irvine (present) Teacher at Happy Hollow Elem., served 15 years with WLCSC Debra Glover-Shoaf (present) Teacher at Happy Hollow Elem., served 28 years with WLCSC Cheryl Rule (present) Teacher at Cumberland Elem., served 27 years with WLCSC Curtis Watson Teacher at Jr./Sr, High School, served 27 years with WLCSC Doug Obenchain Maintenance Technician, served 17 years with WLCSC Larry Wood Director of Maintenance, served 5 years with WLCSC The following legislators were also present and presented awards to each of the retirees for their years of service to the West Lafayette Community School Corporation. Senator Ron Alting Representative Sheila Klinker B. Academic Achievement White Paper to G-23 Committee This item was tabled. C. School Board Policy 2 nd Reading Recommendation: Dr. Killion recommended the School Board of Trustees approve the Dog Policy as present to the board. A motion was made that the Board of School Trustees approve the Dog Therapy Policy. Motion by: Mr. Masson Seconded by: Mr. Bittner Vote: 6 of 6 D. Skyward Update Mr. Dan Walbaum, Associate Principal of Jr./Sr. High School expressed Skyward has been universally excepted and has received positive feedback from teachers and parents. The software has allowed for better communication, grading, and attendance record keeping. The portability is more accessible and allows for parents to be more proactive and involved in lunch accounts, tests, and homework etc. Technical support has also been great with problem solving. Mrs. Kim Bowers and Mrs. Margaret Pasarros were also present and expressed similar comments about Skyward student database. Overall the areas of improvement include student history access at Jr. Sr. High School and the input of grading compatibility for elementary students at Cumberland. E. Certified Staff Summative Evaluation Form Recommendation: Dr. Killion recommended the Board of School Trustees approve the revised Certified Staff Summative Evaluation Form. The form has been revised by stream lining and focusing on student achievement. A motion was made that the Board of School Trustees approve the revised Certified Staff Summative Evaluation Form. Motion by: Dr. Springer Seconded by: Mrs. Witt Vote: 6 of 6 F. DARE Officer Recognition Dr. Killion recognized Janet Winslow, DARE Officer of the Year. Congratulations to Officer Winslow and thanks for your support and service to the West Lafayette Community School Corporation. 2

E. Bus Replacement Resolution Recommendation: Mr. Ross Sloat recommended the School Board of Trustees approve the Bus Replacement Resolution. The resolution is a part of the 2017 Budget process. A motion was made that the Board of School Trustees to approve the Bus Replacement Resolution. Motion by: Mr. Masson Seconded by: Mr. Schott Vote: 6 of 6 Recommendation: Mr. Ross Sloat recommended the School Board of Trustees approve a new camera system on the buses. The current equipment is dated and does not record properly. A motion was made that the Board of School Trustees to approve new camera system for the buses. Motion by: Dr. Springer Seconded by: Mr. Schott Vote: 6 of 6 F. Jr. Sr. High School Chiller Recommendation: Dr. Killion recommended the School Board of Trustees approve the Chiller project at the Jr. Sr. High School. The current chiller suffered damage during an electrical panel fire and this chiller is to serve as a back up to a new chiller to be installed this fall. The new chiller will be more conducive to cooling the square footage of the Jr. Sr. High School. This project is considered a part of the Facilities Plan. Discussion ensued. A motion was made that the Board of School Trustees to approve the Jr. Sr. High School Chiller project. Motion by: Mrs. Witt Seconded by: Mr. Schott Vote: 6 of 6 G. School Board Calendar Recommendation: Mr. Karpick recommended the School Board of Trustees approve the School Board Meeting Calendar for 2016-2017 school year. A request was made to change September 6, 2016 Regular Meeting time to 7:00 PM. A motion was made that the Board of School Trustees to approve 2016-2017 School Board Meeting Calendar. Motion by: Dr. Springer Seconded by: Mr. Bittner Vote: 6 of 6 V. INFORMATION TO THE BOARD None VI. VII. BOARD AND SUPERINTENDENT REPORTS WLSEF Tom Schott report the Foundation raised just under $4400 at the Eat, Drink, and Donate Fundraiser. There is discussion about having an Alumni tent at the Homecoming game and offering tours. And they are working on the Campaign Consultant for the Facilities Fundraiser. Public Schools Foundation Douglas Masson reported a Cupcake Run at Cumberland Park will be held on September 25, 2016. Registration is $25 for 5K or 10K. Redevelopment Commission Brian Bittner reported continued traffic and construction across the city. Parks and Recreation Karen Springer reported the West Lafayette Pool at Happy Hollow Elementary closes for the season on Sunday August 7 th. Family Fun Day will be held Sunday Aug 28 th 1-4 PM at West Lafayette Public Library and Morton Center. COMMUNICATION FROM THE AUDIENCE None 3
