Future AP Physics 1 Students: You have a summer assignment that is designed to help you start the school year prepared for AP Physics 1. Algebraic reasoning is a vital skill in physics; therefore, the summer assignment will review and help you further develop those skills. This assignment should be done close to the beginning of the school year, but do not put it off till the last minute! What you are doing: Assignment 1: There will be an introductory assignment that will walk you through different types of questions to familiarize you with Mastering Physics (an on-line program you will be using throughout the year). This does not require any knowledge of physics and is designed to help you get familiar with the program. Assignments 2 5: Students will then complete problems to practice algebra skills using physics formulas. They will have to rearrange formulas and solve for missing variables in physics equations. Why you are doing it: Algebraic reasoning is an important skill to master in order to succeed in AP Physics. We will not have time in class to reteach algebra skills, so the summer assignment is designed to practice problems that will help you become more fluent in algebraic reasoning. While these problems will be hard at first, they should get easier as you go. You will be rearranging equations, and that is different from what you are used to. You cannot survive physics without learning how to rearrange equations, so it will make the year much easier if you learn this valuable skill. We also use Mastering Physics as an on online homework system that gives you immediate feedback on your homework problems and sometimes provides hints when you get stuck. Starting to use this program over the summer will allow you to get accustomed to the program before we get into the difficult concepts of physics. How the assignment will be graded: Assignment 1: The introductory assignment will be a daily grade for completion and will be due the first Wednesday we return to school. Assignments 2 5: Mastering Physics will pick problems from a poll of questions I have already screened or created. You will have 4 assignments with a total of 48 questions. These 4 assignments will each count as a daily grade (4 daily grades total) and will be due the first Wednesday we return to school. They will be graded for correctness since this is knowledge that should be learned prior to starting physics. The answers will be provided after the due date and will be automatically graded according to the grade policy on MP. If you have any questions please feel free to email me at seder@ecisd.org. I will respond to you as soon as I can. If there is something that needs to be addressed in person, we can determine a time to meet at the school office.
