(Graphing paper and colored pens or pencils will be helpful) Math 110 or Math 112 with a grade of C or better or Pre Algebra placement test. A basic calculator is allowed in this class. No graphing calculator or cell phone can be used as a calculator. COURSE This course will cover chapters 2 9. DESCRIPTION: Chapter 2 Equations, Inequalities, and Problem Solving Chapter 3 Graphing Chapter 4 Solving System of Linear Equations and Inequalities Chapter 5 Exponents and Polynomials Chapter 6 Factoring Polynomials Chapter 7 Rational Expressions Chapter 8 Roots and Radicals Chapter 9 Quadratic Equations ATTENCANCE: We have a lot of material to cover and understand, so regular attendance is crucial to your success in the class. Please come on time and stay for the duration of the class. If you cannot attend regularly, on time, and stay for the entire class, you should take this class at another time that fits your schedule. Students arriving late or leaving early, without authorization from the instructor, may be marked tardy. Three recorded tardies will count as one absence. Excessive absences (3 or more) may result in being dropped from the class. As a result, you must th contact me to avoid being dropped from the class on the 3 absences. HOMEWORK: Homework assignments will be assigned online at http://www.coursecompass.com/ and will be due as indicated. You should complete the work daily and it is your responsibility to keep track of your assignments. Plan on studying and completing homework a minimum of 15 hours per week. Motivation, tenacity, and a positive attitude are keys to an individual s success. So, let s succeed! There also will be homework assignment from the textbook. These assignments will not be collected, however, quizzes problems will be taken verbatim from these assignments. Reading sections will be assigned each class meeting from the text and it is your responsibility to catch up with the class due to your absences. CLASSWORK: Classwork will consist of several problems from the textbook and must be turned in by the end of class each day. Work must be shown in order to receive credit (papers showing only answers will not be accepted). You are encouraged, but not required, to work on the classwork problems

QUIZZES: EXAMS: FINAL EXAM: GRADING: with a partner or in a small group (no more than four students per group). You may drop 2 classwork assignments. Quizzes will be given throughout the semester as indicated on the EXAMINATION SCHEDULE hand out and will primarily focus on reading assignment and previous homework assignment. You can use your homework on the quizzes. Therefore, it is your benefit to finished the assign homework on time. No makeup quizzes will be given under any circumstances. However, two of your lowest quiz score will be dropped at the end of the semester. There are 4 exams, 100 points each, for a total of 400 points. No makeup exams will be given! The final exam will be used for the missing exam at the end of the semester. Thus any missing exam or the lowest exam will be replaced with the final score. The final exam is cumulative. No makeup finals will be given. Your grade will be computed from your assignment, participation, quizzes, chapter tests, and your final exam scores. Any missing exam will be scored zero. The following is a breakdown of how the semester grade is computed. Homework/Classwork/Participation 15% Quizzes 10% Chapter Tests 50% Final Exam 25% 90% 100% = A 60% 69% = D 80% 89% = B Below 60% = F 70% 79% = C EXPECTATIONS: A collaborative and respectful environment. I expect you to come to class with a commitment to learn and to take responsibility for your learning. This means participating in the discussions and in group work, taking notes, and helping others to learn. Please ask questions and let me know if you have difficulties. If you feel you may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability, please contact me privately to discuss your specific needs. You will be asked to leave if you engage in any inappropriate behavior during class. SOME RULES: THIS IS AN ELECTRONIC DEVICE FREE CLASS! This means NO cell phone, NO texting, NO ipods or iphones, No Blackberries, or any other device that might be invented during semester. You are welcome to use a computer to take notes but non class related Internet surfing is expressly forbidden. All cell phones and other electronic devices must be turned OFF before class begins. I have absolutely ZERO tolerance for anyone abusing this request and violators will be dropped from the class. CLASSES START PROMPTLY AT THE ASSIGNED TIME! COME TO CLASS PREPARED! As a courtesy to your fellow students and to the instructor, please be on time. I will NOT accept your quiz if you are late for class unless you have my prior permission. By taking this class you have committed yourself to two hours and thirty minutes of learning. I expect you to stay in the class for the complete assigned time period. Take care of your personal business before or after class. You absolutely must keep up with the readings. You grade depends on it. Interact with the class. Ask questions anytime. It s okay to interrupt the lecture if you want to question something or make a point. Challenge yourself and your classmates. When you leave this class you will have a great understanding of the materials.

Neither food nor drinks are allowed in the classroom with the exception of bottled water. DROP POLICY: Roll will taken every class meeting. It is your responsibility to drop the class if you decide not to finish the course. If you stop attending and do not drop, and I do not exclude you, your name will appear on the grade roster at the end of the semester and there will be no choice but to assign a Fail grade. So be sure to officially drop if you do not intend to finish the course. The last day to drop in person without a W is March 6, 2009 The last day to drop in person with a W is May 8, 2009 CHEATING POLICY: A student caught cheating will receive an "F" in the course, and a report will be filed with the Vice president of Students Affairs. COMPUTER LAB: You should visit the computer lab (Room 1631, entrance from room 1604). It is free. The hours for this semester are the following: STUDY TIPS: Monday Thursday Friday 8:00AM 8:00PM 8:00AM 2:00PM Start homework as soon as possible. Rewrite the problem being asked. Place a star (*) next to problems you need help with. Read the book. Study every night for 1 3 hours in a quiet room at home or in the library. Review problems that were the most difficult and practice weak areas. (includes returned exams) Create flash cards. Make an appointment if you need extra help You may also tutor one another by forming a study group with those in class. REMARK: 1. All turn in assignments, quizzes and exam must be done in PENCIL and must be stapled. 2. Final Exam: Saturday, May 30 in the AFTERNOON

Math 115 Spring 2009 Guide to Access Online Resources CourseCompass is the course management system (CMS) used to access online resources for Math 115. The resources include student solution manual, online homework assignments, discussion boards, multimedia textbook and more. To enroll in the CourseCompass course, each student will need the following: Student access code. Students will receive this code when they purchase the book. Important: The student access code is nontransferable and can be used only once. Course ID srichoom20621 Email address The student's registration and enrollment confirmation will be sent to this email address. This address is also available to you, the instructor, for course-based communications. A student who does not already have a Pearson account and is enrolling for the first time should follow the registration instructions on the home page of the CourseCompass website. A student who already has a Pearson account performs steps 1 through 6 in Registering and Enrolling in a New Subject below to enroll in a new course. To assist these students, copy the instructions to a document and distribute. You may want to enter your course ID in the space provided in step 3. Registering and Enrolling in a New Subject 1. Go to http://www.coursecompass.com and click Register in the Students area. 2. Review the list of required items for enrolling in a course, and click Next. 3. Enter the course ID: srichoom20621 for your new course, and click Find Course. 4. Follow the instructions to either: Use a student access code or Purchase access online 5. Print the Confirmation page to keep a record of your registration and enrollment information, your login name, and the email address used for your account. 6. Click Log In Now to access your new course. To use a student access code: 1. Verify the course information and click Access Code. 2. Enter your student access code and click Next. 3. Review the license agreement and click I Accept. 4. Indicate whether you already have a Pearson account: a. If not, select No and follow the instructions to create your login name and password. b. If you do, select Yes and enter your login information. c. If you're not sure, select Not sure. Enter your email address and click Search. If you have an account, you will receive your login information by email, and you can change your selection to Yes. If you do not have an account, change your selection to No and create your login information. Click Next.

5. Enter or confirm the information requested on the Account information page: a. Your name and an email address that you check regularly b. School Location: Select your school country and, for schools in the U.S., enter the zip code. From the resulting list, select your school name. If it is not listed, select Other and enter school name, city, and state. C. Security question: Select a question from the drop-down list; then enter the answer. Click Next. To purchase course access online: 1. Click Buy Now. 2. Click the Buy button next to the course materials you want to buy. (You might see options with or without an online ebook, for example.) 3. Accept the license agreement. 4. Indicate whether you already have a Pearson account: If not, select No and follow the instructions to create your login name and password. If you do, select Yes and enter your login information. If you're not sure, select Not sure. Enter your email address and click Search. If you have an account, you will receive your login information by email, and you can change your selection to Yes. Steps to do homework online: 1. Go to http://www.coursecompass.com/ 2. Log in using your user name and password. 3. Click on Math 115 Beginning Algebra 4. Click on DO HOMEWORK on the left column. 5. Click on THE NAME OF THE ASSIGNMENT 6. Click on question 1(you will see the question, work on it and write the answer down in the box) 7. Click Check Answer every time you work on each problem 8. Click 2 on the tap to move on to the second question, then follows steps 6. 9. You can finish homework at once or you can work on them a little bit by a little bit each day, but make sure to click save each time you work on the assignment.
