to Welcome to all new and returning students, faculty and staff! This year promises to be an exciting time for all of us here at SIUE. The SIUE Statement on Diversity reflects SIUE s commitment to recognizing and valuing the contributions of the breadth of humankind. All societies and peoples have contributed to the rich mix of contemporary humanity. In order to achieve domestic and international peace, social justice and the development of full human potential, we must build on this diversity and inclusion. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville nurtures an open, respectful, and welcoming climate that facilitates learning and work. Each member of the University is responsible for contributing to such a campus environment. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is committed to education that explores the historic significance of diversity in order to understand the present and to better enable our community to engage the future. Integral to this commitment, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville strives for a student body and a workforce that is both diverse and inclusive. Plan to participate in campus activities, and especially our Diversity and Inclusion activities. Check out our website at www.siue.edu/institutionaldiversityandinclusion for a list of activities every month, observances of heritage months, and announcements about diversity and inclusion programming and collaborations all over campus. We want to take this opportunity to welcome you to a campus committed to diversity and inclusion and to a community of scholars committed to ensuring that our students are ready for the world. We are pleased to see the diversity among your group; different races, ethnicities, ages, gender identities, physical capabilities and beliefs are all represented in your cohort. Your diversity is an asset that supports our academic goals and prepares our students to be successful in a future where converging ethnicities can foster innovation and quality of life for the communities we serve. You are strongly encouraged to share your diversity with your students, colleagues, and the community so that we enhance our learning, understanding of differences and ultimately celebrate our similarities.

Online Learning Community You are invited to participate in our Diversity & Inclusion Online Learning Community! Please log on to SIUE's Blackboard Site (and go to My Organizations) to enroll in our Online Learning Community. As you make your way through this community, we would like to help you decide where to go first. Take a look at what each area has to offer: COMMUNITY: This area contains Community Topics on a variety of Diversity & Inclusion subjects, such as LGBT Pride, Women's Rights, and African American History. You'll also find links to the discussion board, where you can start or continue a conversation related to the topic, or share your thoughts in the Open Mic forum. RESOURCES: This is where you can find resources on diversity and inclusion awards for SIUE students, faculty, and staff; information about SIUE's new Multicultural Center (located on the 2nd Floor in the MUC); details about mentoring programs on campus; and resources for veterans. You can also share resources through Community wikis, or simply use a private journal space for personal reflections. TRAININGS: Anyone can take part in the online training modules in this community. Learn about how to identify and reduce bias and more with these self-paced trainings. You will receive a certificate of completion when you complete the module, which you can add to your personal or professional portfolio. Modules will continue to be added throughout the semesters. BOOK CLUBS: Take a look at this semester's selection for the on-campus Diversity & Inclusion Book Clubs. Find fliers and other information here about meeting times, chapter summaries, and discussion prompts. Faculty are welcome to use these resources in class, including the book club quizzes. FILM SERIES: Here you will find trailers for films shown in the on-campus Diversity & Inclusion Film Series, as well as discussion questions and evaluations for each. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to investigate the films before coming to an on-campus showing, or reach out to staff in the Office of Diversity & Inclusion to arrange another way to see the film. Faculty may want to preview films and resources here before using in class.
