1 INTRODUCTION AND INTERPRETATION 1.1 Introduction These Course Regulations apply to all students enrolled in the Bachelor of Theology Award at The University of Notre Dame Australia. These Regulations should be read in conjunction with the University s General Regulations and the School of Philosophy and Theology Regulations. 1.2 Interpretation The terms included in these Regulations have the meanings as defined in the University s General Regulations and the School of Philosophy and Theology Regulations. 1.3 Amendments made to Course Regulations Unless otherwise specified, when amendments are made to the structure, content or academic requirements of the Bachelor of Theology Award, the amendments will automatically apply in accordance with General Regulation Section 1.7. 1.4 Applicability to Campuses of the University The Bachelor of Theology Award is available on the Fremantle and Sydney Campuses only. 1.5 The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) The Bachelor of Theology Award is a Level 7 AQF qualification. 2 ENTRY CRITERIA 2.1 General Criteria The standard entry requirements for admission are detailed in the University s General Regulations and the School of Philosophy and Theology Regulations. 2.2 Additional Entry Requirements / Pre-Requisites There are no additional entry requirements or pre-requisites for this Award. 2.3 External Accreditation Requirements External accreditation requirements are not applicable to this Award. 3 AWARD REQUIREMENTS 3.1 Structure For the Bachelor of Theology Award Structure, refer to Appendices A-E. 3.1.1 Compulsory s Except as noted in paragraphs 3.1.2 and 3.1.3, all Bachelor of Theology students must successfully complete the following units: (i) Seventy five (75) credit points worth of Core Curriculum units as specified in the General Regulations of the University; and (ii) TH111 Introduction to the Old Testament (25 credit points) (iii) TH121 Introduction to the New Testament (25 credit points) (iv) TH241 Faith and Culture Fundamental Theology (25 credit points) (v) TH242 Christology (25 credit points) (vi) At least one unit from Area A (Biblical Studies) (vii) At least one unit from Area B (Church History) (viii) At least one unit from Area D (Moral Theology) (ix) At least one unit from Area E (Practical/Pastoral Studies) 3.1.2 Elective s There are Elective unit(s) within this Award. (a) In addition to the compulsory units noted in 3.1.1, students must successfully complete eleven (11) elective units in Theology and a further six (6) elective units in another discipline to be awarded a Bachelor of Theology (with a minor). (b) Electives in Theology may be taken from 100-400 level units in Area A (Biblical Studies), Area B (Church History), Area C (Theology), Area D (Moral Theology) and Area E (Practical /Pastoral Studies). 3.1.3 Majors and Double Majors A Major in Philosophy is available within this Award. (a) A student may complete a Bachelor of Theology degree with a major in Philosophy provided the student successfully completes 8 Philosophy units (25 credit points each). (b) To be awarded a Bachelor of Theology with a Major in Philosophy, a student must successfully complete a total of 26 units totaling 650 credit points which is 2 units and 50 credit points above the standard course. See Appendix B for Fremantle, Appendix D for Sydney. 3.1.4 Minors A Minor in Philosophy is available within this Award. A student may complete a Bachelor of Theology with a Minor in Philosophy provided the student successfully completes 6 Philosophy units (25 credit points each). See Appendix B for Fremantle and Appendix D for Sydney. 3.1.5 Specialisations There are no Specialisations available in this Award. 3.1.6 Special Interest s There are no Special Interest s available in this Award. 3.2 Special Award Requirements There are no special award requirements in the Bachelor of Theology Award. 3.3 Practicum or Internship requirements There are no Practicum or Internship requirements in this Award. 3.4 Approved unit substitutions substitutions, where permitted, must be approved by the Dean. 3.5 Alternative Pathways Alternative pathways are not applicable to this Award. 3.6 Volume of Learning 3.6.1 Standard Duration (a) The standard duration for the Bachelor of Theology Award is three (3) years of equivalent full-time study. (b) A student is able to enrol in this Award on a part-time basis. 3.6.2 Accelerated Duration An accelerated mode is not available for the Bachelor of Theology Award. 3.6.3 Maximum Duration The maximum period of time within which a student is permitted to complete the Bachelor of Theology Award is detailed in the University s General Regulations. 3.7 Graduation Where a student has satisfied all the requirements of the Bachelor of Theology Award as detailed in these Course Regulations and the General Regulations, the University may grant the student graduation status. 3.8 Exit Awards An Exit Award pathway is available for this Award. Exit awards for the Bachelor of Theology: Diploma of Theology Diploma of Pastoral Studies 3.9 Honours The Bachelor of Theology Award is offered with Honours. Specific admission requirements for the Honours degree are detailed in the course regulations and are to be read in conjunction with the Policy: The Award of a degree with Honours. 3.9.1 Admission (a) Admission to the Bachelor of Theology with Honours is by application and is subject to approval by the Dean. (b) Enrolment in the Bachelor of Theology Honours program is permitted on a part-time basis with the permission of the Dean. (c) Students who have completed a relevant Bachelors degree at another recognised tertiary institution may be admitted to the Bachelor of Theology (Honours) program provided they meet the selection criteria outlined in 3.9.2 below. (d) Students admitted from other recognized tertiary institutions will be required to undertake one Core Curriculum unit in their honours year in addition to the required course work and research thesis. 3.9.2 Selection Criteria The following selection criteria will be used for a student applying to enrol in the Bachelor of Theology Honours program: (a) (b) Students entering from the Bachelor of Theology degree: (i) The achievement of a GPA of 3.0 across all units of study in the Bachelor degree. (ii) No instance of confirmed (documented) misconduct or violation of academic integrity. Where a student applies to enrol in the Bachelor of Theology (Honours) from another recognised tertiary institution their prior studies must, in addition the normal entry requirements for this course listed above, also meet the following criteria: (i) A completed Bachelors degree. (ii) At least thirteen units of theology within their completed Bachelors degree. 3.9.3 Deferral of Participation in the Honours Program An option to defer a place in the Honours program is not available. 3.9.4 Structure (a) (i) AL401 Honours research seminar I (ii) AL403 Honours coursework unit I (b) (c) (i) AL402 Honours research seminar II (ii) AL404 Honours coursework unit II Research Component (i) SH91712 Supervised Honours Philosophy & Theology (full year unit) (ii) The Honours research component requires the completion of a thesis, which is to be no less than 15,000 and no more than 18,000 words in length. 3.9.5 Examination of a Research Component (a) The Bachelor of Theology (Honours) research thesis will be examined by one internal and one external marker. (b) The School of Philosophy and Theology arranges the examination of the honours thesis using its own established guidelines and rubrics that are made available to students and examiners, and which are consistent with the Policy: The Award of a Degree with Honours and General Regulations of the University of Notre Dame Australia. 3.9.6 Progress within Honours In accord with the University Policy: The Award of a Degree with Honours: (a) When a student fails a coursework component of the honours program their candidature in the course will be normally be terminated. The Dean of the School of Philosophy and Theology may permit a student to repeat the coursework component or engage in other coursework studies in lieu of the failed coursework. (b) To qualify for the award of honours a student will normally be expected to receive at least a grade for their research thesis 3.9.7 Ranking of Honours Awards The ranking on all Honours programs will be awarded in accordance with General Regulation 3.9.1. 3.9.8 Awarding Honours Honours within the Bachelor of Theology Award is awarded as a graded Honours.
