GENERAL INFORMATION FSQA/YQCA If you plan to show any of the following species at the County Fair, you must be FSQA/YQCA certified: Beef, dairy (goat or cow), meat goat, poultry, rabbit, sheep, swine What is FSQA? FSQA stands for Food Safety and Quality Assurance. This program focuses on the seven Good Production Practices to ensure 4-H youth are producing safe food. What is YQCA? YQCA stands for Youth for the Quality and Care of Animals. The National Pork Board is transitioning to this program over from YPQA and FSQA. It is an online training offered nationally, with in-person options beginning next year. This training is a yearly certification and has a cost of $12 for the online version. With the merge of FSQA and YQCA there are multiple options for certification, outlined to the right. For 2018, both options will be available with a transition to YQCA over the next two years. County Council! How do you become certified?. 4-H ers grades 4-6 must either: Attend the in person training (see dates below) Complete the online training via 4honline 4-H ers grades 7-12 must do one of these options: Take the Intermediate or Senior Test, which will only certify them for this year Attend the in person training (see dates below) Complete the online training via 4honline Training Dates March 27 from 6-8 pm in Montezuma High School FFA Room June 4 from 9-11 am at the Poweshiek County Fairgrounds Please call the Extension Office to RSVP for one of these trainings at least one week in advance: 641.623.5188 *If you are not able to attend one of the trainings/ testing sessions, please plan to watch the YQCA video and pay the $12. Register by April 1! Spend a fun night at the Omaha Zoo which will include a night hike, IMAX movie, and fun games. Row by Row Jr Learn Basic Sewing Skills What: A program for learning the basics of quilting. Participants will be quilting a dog pattern. Where to get Patterns: True Value and Brooklyn Fabric Company in Brooklyn and 3 Sisters in Montezuma. Workshop When: Join us to put together a strip of the Row by Row quilt on March 3rd from 9 am-noon in Brooklyn! Who: Anyone age 6 to 14 years old may attend and receive one free kit. Kits can be purchased by individuals not in this age range. This is a great, hands-on learning opportunity for youth who are interested in raising and showing meat goats! Are you interested in having an animal project, but don t know which animal would be a good fit? The Iowa Dairy Goat Association is offering the Share-a- Kid program for 2018. This statewide Win a Free Meat Goat! 4-H and FFA members who attend the Tall Corn Meat Goat Sale will be eligible to win a meat goat wether. Where: Kalona Sale Barn, Kalona, Iowa When: April 7 Preview Aniamls at 9:00 am Replacement Sale at 10:30 am Only this wether or wethers purchased at this sale are eligible to show at the 2018 Tall Corn Jackpot Wether Show on August 5, 2018 for $3000 in prize money. contest is open to those in 4 th through 12 th grades, and who are active members of IDGA, 4-H, FFA, or other agricultural groups. Selected applicants will be awarded a donated doeling and mentorship from the donor. Applications will be accepted January 1, 2018 through March 15, 2018. The application guidelines and form can be accessed on the IDGA website www.iowadairygoat.org Replacement sale will include registered Full Blodd and Percentage Boer Does and Registered Full Blood Bucks. There will be 100 wethers, does and bucks at this sale so there is sure to be something for everyone! Must be present to win the free meat goat! Who is Eligible: 16-21 years olds who are interested in sharing the knowledge of the poultry industry with others Time of Service: February 2018 February 2019 Duties: Represent the Iowa Poultry Association and the Iowa Egg Council. Attend county fairs in your area. Speak at events approved by the board/council Be present for the Iowa State Fair poultry shows. Attend other related poultry and egg sponsored events at the Iowa State Fair. We will also be including a topic on hand washing to remind kids how important it is to wash your hands with all the flu and cold germs floating around this time of year.
