The British School of Lomé E N D E A V O U R I S A L L

Welcome to The British School of Lomé The British School of Lomé is a school which has been described as the most prestigious international school in West Africa and for good reason. Established 30 years ago, we have earned an enviable reputation for providing a first class education and excellent pastoral care for every child; instilling traditional values such as discipline, respect and integrity. We are an International school in the very best sense of the word. By offering International (I)GCSEs and the International Baccalaureate we provide an internationally recognised curriculum, within a sophisticated environment, with strong family values. As a co-educational boarding and day school, our pupils are from more than 30 different nationalities, 17 from the continent of Africa, and range in age from 3 to 18 years. It is no surprise that we are the school of choice for Diplomats, senior UN officials and families at the forefront of Togolese and West African society. Our school motto - Endeavour Is All is well deserved. We value not just academic success but talent of all kinds, whether in art or drama, music or sports. Our highly experienced staff, many of them British, are hand-picked to bring out the best in every individual. Small class sizes mean we can give each child the support, advice and guidance he or she needs to reach their full potential. We strongly believe that a kind, helpful pupil with a positive attitude to school life and fellow pupils is every bit as worthwhile as a brilliant scholar, artist or athlete. By fostering mutual understanding between people of different creeds and cultures we create a happy atmosphere where pupils work to the best of their abilities and have every opportunity to find and build on their strengths. This helps to develop qualities including integrity, compassion and tolerance. Our pupils become well-rounded individuals fully prepared in every way for the step forward into the world s top Universities. My experience at BSL has been the best that I have had so far. BSL not only offers good education it also prepares people for life as a whole. There is a place for everyone and as a result everyone is comfortable, old or new. Mahima, Y9, 14 years old, Indian

Welcome E N D E A V O U R I S A L L I ARRIVED AT THE BRITISH SCHOOL OF LOME THREE MONTHS AGO, WELCOMED INTO A NEW ENVIRONMENT IN A NEW COUNTRY. I QUICKLY ADJUSTED. THE ATMOSPHERE AT BSL IS ONE THAT ENCOURAGES DEVELOPMENT NOT ONLY EDUCATIONALLY BUT ALSO SOCIALLY. I HAVE COME TO REALISE THAT BSL IS A FAMILY, A FAMILY THAT I HAVE BECOME PART OF. Rose, IB Y12, 17 years old, Ivorian

Being a BSL student is an honour. There are always events during the weekend and so the students see the school as fun as well. I like BSL for the relationship which is built between students and teachers and the conducive learning atmosphere. Aisha, Y8, 13 years old, Nigerian E N D E A V O U R I S A L L

We chose the British School because we wanted to put our daughter in an academically challenging, yet positive and nurturing environment. We ve been very happy with our decision to put her at the BSL. Parent Learning... The British School of Lomé provides the very best elements of an international education within a traditional framework. All our full time teachers are committed, experienced professionals, and our programme of continuing professional development enables them to keep abreast of developments in education in both the United Kingdom and the rest of the world. Our broad based curriculum balances academic and aesthetic subjects, giving pupils the opportunity not just to take on board knowledge but also to learn skills and develop personal qualities which are the tools for future success. In Primary years the emphasis is on English and mathematics, and our themed approach to other subjects gives a framework to pupils learning. Computing, French, music, library skills and physical education are also included in the Reception to Year 6 Curriculum. We want to thank all Seyi s teachers for the warm reception and good work done with the children. We left the school knowing we had made a good decision to send him to BSL. Parent Our Secondary Years (Year 7 to Year 11) gives students a host of subjects to choose from in addition to core curriculum subjects English, language and literature, mathematics, French and science, which is a double award. The two year International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) courses we offer (Year 10 and Year 11) are excellent preparation for pupils wishing to enter our two year pre-university International Baccalaureate (IB) programme. This highly regarded programme engages students in a wide range of learning experiences which enrich their lives and help their moral and ethical development. The first class education we provide eases students passage to the University, College or career of their choice.

The teachers and administrators have been warm and welcoming and very professional and our daughter immediately felt comfortable in the close-knit community. Parent Care... Parents of students at the British School of Lomé particularly value the excellent pastoral care provided to all our pupils. We recognise that children, especially boarders, are bound to be nervous when they first arrive at a new school and face the challenge of sharing a new place with new people. Over the last 30 years we have developed a close understanding of how to help them settle in and enjoy school life. Our carefully selected staff have all the necessary skills and experience to get to know and understand each child s individual personality and specific needs. We encourage pupils to discuss any issues or worries they have and work closely together to identify and resolve any problems or concerns. However children are very adaptable and we find they quickly become immersed in routines, activities and new friends. We continue to support children emotionally as they progress through school. Boarding Houses feel very much like big families where people socialise, enjoy life and are good citizens. Discipline here is firm but fair and all pupils are treated equally, leading to a happy, safe atmosphere which is the envy of more old-fashioned boarding schools in some neighbouring countries where outdated practices are still observed. We operate a robust system of discipline and incentives to encourage good behaviour. Our high expectations are rewarded by high levels of excellent conduct. Most pupils aspire to be chosen as Head Girl or Head Boy and those who behave most responsibly are rewarded with the role of Prefect. Boarders parents are welcome to visit at any time and Parents Evenings and Open Days are regular features in the school calendar. There is ample opportunity to follow every child s progress or raise any issues. BEING THE HEAD GIRL AT BSL TAUGHT ME MANY LIFE LESSONS. THE EXPERIENCE HAS ENRICHED MY LIFE. IT WAS A UNIQUE JOURNEY THAT HELPED ME GROW INTELLECTUALLY AND EMOTIONALLY. Worlasie, IB Y13, 19 years old, Ghanaian

I ENJOY LEAVING HOME TO COME TO SCHOOL KNOWING THAT THE PEOPLE HERE MAKE ME FEEL AT HOME. Deborah, Y7, 12 years old, American E N D E A V O U R I S A L L

BSL is a very nice school; from Reception to Year 13 it is a very good school. Our motto is Endeavour Is All. Once a child finishes in BSL they become an extremely bright child. Also in BSL try bullying and you won t like what happens. There is no bullying in BSL. This is my first year and I am loving it. Kaniz, Y7, 12 years old, Nigerian E N D E A V O U R I S A L L

WE HAVE FUN ALL THE TIME BECAUSE OF THE TEACHERS, IN LESSON TIME AND AFTER SCHOOL DURING ACTIVITIES. I LIKE THAT TEACHERS COME FROM LOTS OF DIFFERENT PLACES. Amina, Y5, 9 years old, American Life... Life for both day pupils and boarders at The British School of Lomé is packed with fun things to do. There is a wide variety of after-school clubs and activities from 3.00pm to 5.00pm and on Saturday mornings, run by school staff and teachers but very much owned by the children. Choir and extra musical instrument practice also takes place in these time slots. Pupils are introduced to a wide range of pursuits and hobbies, giving them the opportunity to discover what they enjoy best, be it horse-riding or chess, rock-climbing or rugby. Children can try their hand at everything from golf, swimming and karate to science club, cooking - or even Karaoke pop singing! I LOVE ALL THE NEW BOOKS WE HAVE IN THE CLASSROOM AND THAT I HAVE MADE SOME GREAT FRIENDS HERE. INTERNATIONAL WEEKEND WAS BRILLIANT! Morgane, Y5, 10 years old, French We have a strong sports department where football, volleyball and basketball are available and competitive matches are played against other schools in Lomé. The school also takes part in international sports tournaments once or twice a year, competing with the best schools across the region and the wider continent. Other fun things to do include local and international school trips, Easter celebrations, sports days and swimming galas, the Christmas production, Book Week and International Weekend when we celebrate the school s cultural diversity and the home countries of all the children. Also, from Year 10, students can participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, which encourages them to develop skills for life and work and fulfill their potential. All sports, activities and clubs are inclusive and play an important role in the school s high level of social cohesion, bringing together pupils of different backgrounds and abilities. In line with the school motto, Endeavour Is All, we expect every child to strive to be the very best that he or she can be and our pupils rise to that challenge.

being at the British School of Lome has been an incredible journey. Not only have I developed stronger problem solving skills for university, but I have cultivated life long principals such as dignity and responsibility. IB and BSL has made me the person I am proud of today. Ezinwo, 18 years old girl, Nigerian The Gateway to University... At the heart of our two year pre-university programme (Year 12 and Year 13) are the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme (D of E). Our holistic approach encourages enquiring minds and creativity as well as academic achievement and takes learning much further than the classroom excellent preparation for the vitally important next step in a student s education. Universally accepted as a University entrance examination, the IB Diploma opens the door to the world s most prestigious Colleges and Universities including Cambridge, Harvard, Heidelberg, MIT, Oxford, Rotterdam Erasmus, Sorbonne and Yale. Formal agreements are in place between the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) and many Ministries of Education and private institutions. Students with a good IB Diploma are offered advanced placement or course credits by some Colleges and Universities. The IBO publishes and regularly updates guides to University recognition in each of its geographic regions. The pre-university programme is an excellent springboard to higher education and successful careers. We prepare young people for adult life in a highly competitive world: we help to make them the best they can possibly be. As part of the programme our students have the opportunity from Year 10 to earn a D of E Award, also known as the International Award. Experience proves that encouraging the development of creative, physical and social skills in this way strengthens students work ethic and gives each individual the confidence to fulfil their potential. BOTH TEACHERS AND STUDENTS ARE VERY FRIENDLY AND HENCE THE SCHOOL S ENVIRONMENT IS VERY POSITIVE. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND BSL TO ANYONE. Victoria, IB Y13, 18 years old, Nigerian

Gateway HE COULD NEVER HAVE GOT THIS FAR WITHOUT THE GREAT TEAM AT BSL WHERE HIS INDIVIDUAL TALENTS, QUIRKS, UPS AND DOWNS, MOMENTS OF GREAT JOY AND DESIRE TO LEARN WERE ALL FOSTERED AND DEVELOPED. WITH ALL OUR THANKS FOR ALL THE WORK WITH SAM. Parent E N D E A V O U R I S A L L
