We can get you started! Dual Credit Early College AP Courses Career Exploration Job Shadows C4 Classes Work Based Learning - Internships A HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA IS NOT ENOUGH!

What are AP courses? Advanced Placement (AP) courses are college level courses taught in high school according to a prescribed, approved curriculum. College credit can be earned by taking the end of year AP exam. SHS offers 23 semesters of AP credit in English, math, science, social studies, and business.

What is Dual Credit? Dual credit is taking a high school course and earning credit 2 places: 1. High School 2. College SHS offers 29 dual credit courses through Ivy Tech worth over 100 college credits. There is no cost for college credit!

What is Early College? Early College classes are offered at postsecondary institutions and taught by their instructors. Students receive released time from SHS to attend Early College Classes. Seymour Comm Schools pays tuition. Students pay for books and provide their own transportation.

What are C4 Classes? C4 Classes are hands on courses taken at the C4 Career Center in Columbus. (Many are Dual Credit!) First Things First Some questions that you want answered tonight!

Will I get to each lunch with my friends? Maybe. SHS has a 3-lunch rotation. Each lunch shift will have students in grades 9-12. Student lunch costs $2.35. Students can eat ala carte which could increase the cost. Breakfast is $1.25

POWER HOUR We piloted a one hour common lunch program last spring which allows all students to have the same one hour lunch period. This gives students the opportunity to seek academic help from a teacher, attend club meetings, form study groups, make up missing work, etc. 30/30 Split

How many classes will I take? SHS operates on an alternating block schedule which allows for 8 periods of scheduled classes.

Every student in the Class of 2021 will be intially scheduled to earn at least a Core 40 Diploma. All freshman are scheduled so that every diploma option is available. General, Core 40, Technical Honors, and Academic Honors

Is there a graduation exam? Yes, the ECA for English and Algebra are being phased out and ISTEP+ 10 becomes the new Graduation Exam. Students will take the exam during Grade 10. Students not passing will have opportunities to re-take the exam in grades 11 and 12.

What math class will I take? The majority of 9 th graders will take algebra I. Students who have taken algebra I in the 8 th grade may be placed in either: Integrated Math I Accelerated Geometry

Do I have to take a foreign language? No. World language is not required for graduation. But.. World language is required for an Academic Honors Diploma. World language is required for admission to some colleges (IU and Purdue). Current options in World Languages include French, Latin, and Spanish.

Is driver s education still offered? No. SHS does not offer driver s education. Students wanting to take driver s education will need to take the class through a private driving company.

How many semesters of PE are required? Can a sport count as PE credit? 2 credits of PE are required for graduation. Students can earn credit for PE through participation in athletics, marching band, and cheerleading (ASPE form must be completed). ASPE form is located on our school website. ASPE credits must be earned by the end of grade 10 or students will be enrolled in PE during the school year.

Do I have to take fine arts classes? No, fine arts credits are not required for graduation. But. 2 fine arts credits are required for the Academic Honors Diploma. Fine arts includes band, choir, art, theatre arts, yearbook, newspaper, and music appreciation (History of Rock n Roll)

Is summer school still offered? No, not for incoming freshman We do offer summer online courses through GradPoint for: 1. Credit Recovery 2. Schedule Conflicts 3. Early Graduation

What is a graduation plan? A graduation plan is a comprehensive plan which includes outlining the diploma type, course selections, and post secondary plans for a student. Counselors will meet with freshmen and parents in individual meetings next fall to work on each student s graduation plan.

9 th Grade Scheduling All freshmen will take: 1. English 2. Math 3. Science 4. Careers Class / Digital Applications Class 5. Study Hall or Algebra Lab 6. Elective 7. Elective 8. Elective

Students and parents choose electives. SMS counselors will work with middle school teachers and high school counselors to choose the appropriate English, math, and science courses. Standardized tests such as ISTEP scores Student grades Teacher or counselor recommendations

The majority of incoming 9 th graders will be enrolled in: English 9 Algebra I Integrated Chemistry/Physics Geography & History of the World Each of these courses meets the requirement for a Core 40 Diploma, Technical Honors Diploma and an Academic Honors Diploma.

Some students may be enrolled in one or more accelerated courses: Accelerated English 9 Accelerated Geometry Accelerated Biology Students wanting an advanced course in social studies will wait until grade 10 and enroll in AP World History.

Choosing Electives Refer to page 2 which contains the elective options. Choose electives to fill 6 semesters. For example.. Semester 1 Semester 2 Spanish I Spanish I Choir Choir Geography Geography

What s the next step? Students need to complete page 4 of the handout. List the course and course number of the electives that you choose Turn in by Feb. 8 th. Seymour Middle School students will enter their course requests through the INOW home portal in their P.R.I.D.E classes. Parochial students should return their elective sheet to the main office at their school by Wednesday, Feb 8 th. Counselors will combine electives with the required academic courses.
