He graduated from The Citadel in 1886 finishing first in his class. After graduation, he accepted the position of assistant professor of mathematics at The Citadel. From this position, he went on to become Professor of Mathematics, Superintendent1908-1910, President 1910-1931, and Dean of The Citadel 1931-1932, serving the college for fifty-one years. (Note: in 1910, the title of Superintendent was changed to President.) While still teaching at The Citadel, Colonel Bond earned a Ph.D. in mathematics in 1895 from Illinois Wesleyan University. In 1912, the University of South Carolina awarded him an honorary degree of doctor of laws. In 1922, under his leadership, The Citadel moved from its Marion Square campus to its new site on the banks of the Ashley River and reached its highest enrollment. The administration building was named in his honor in 1932. Colonel Bond was the author of The Story of The Citadel, a history of The Citadel published posthumously in 1936. He died in his home on The Citadel campus on October 1, 1933. Scope and Content Note: Papers consist of correspondence, diaries and typescript and comprise seventeen boxes (11 linear feet). The correspondence pertains to Colonel Bond s presidency of The Citadel and is arranged as follows: The Citadel Board of Visitors 1908-1930 arranged chronologically; General Correspondence 1908-1930 arranged chronologically; Correspondence 1908-1931 arranged by subject. Colonel Bond s diaries 1885-1889 and 1894-1898 and the typescript of The Story of The Citadel are included. 1
