Course Description: is course includes an intensive review of arithmetic, and an introduction to algebra, including operations on signed numbers, ratio, proportion and percentages, variable expressions, geometry; polynomials, and graphing. Upon successful completion of MATH 015 F Pre-algebra, the student will be able to: 1) Perform various operations on integers, fractions, or decimals, and be able to simplify algebraic expressions involving integers, fractions, or decimals. 2) Solve basic linear equations and verbal problems that require simple mathematical models. 3) Perform operations on polynomials such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, or factoring out the greatest common factor. *For a full list of course objectives, you may refer to Mrs. Price s website. **Required Materials: 1) MyMathLab Student Access (available in the FC bookstore or online) * MyMathLab includes an online textbook, online homework, and other resources. e textbook is Prealgebra, fifth edition, written by Jamie Blair, John Tobey, Jeffrey Slater, and Jennifer Crawford. You may access the textbook online from our MyMathLab course website. In addition, you have the option of purchasing or renting a hard copy of the textbook if you think it would be helpful. Grades will be determined as follows: Percentage Grading Scale Exams 1-4 60% (15% each) A: 90-100% Homework (online) 12% B: 80-89.9% Math Lab worksheets 5% C: 70-79.9% Class Work Packets 3% D: 60-69.9% Final (comprehensive) 20% F: 0-59.9% Class Binder: Your 3-ring binder should be organized with dividers as follows: 1) Class Documents 2) Notes 3) Classwork 4) Math Lab worksheets, and 5) online homework (worked out MyMathLab problems) You will also want to keep plenty of loose leaf paper in your binder. Keep your binder organized so that you can review your notes and homework work later. Label the sections and problem numbers when completing online homework Online Homework: Homework in this class will be turned in online using a program called MyMathLab (MyLab/Mastering). Details on how to register for MyMathLab will be given in class. You will be graded on the percentage of exercises that are answered correctly. You do not have to complete a section in one sitting. If you complete part of an assignment, you can save the work you have completed and return to the rest later, as long as the assignment is still available. You may also print out your homework if you prefer to work on it while not on the computer however, you will need to log in and input your answers on the computer prior to the homework deadline. e sections discussed during class should be completed by the next class meeting to avoid falling behind. e deadline for each week s homework will be on day at 12:00 pm. ere will be NO EXCEPTIONS regarding the due date. e number values for each problem will remain the same unless you answer incorrectly 3 times. In this case, press the similar exercise button and attempt the new exercise. Problems should be worked out on lined paper and kept in your binder. If you are having issues with your home computer, you may use the computers in the Fullerton College Math Lab or the 2200 computer lab. STUDENTS NOT REGISTERED FOR MYMATHLAB BY FEBRUARY 3 MAY BE DROPPED FROM THE CLASS Class Work: Selected exercises will be assigned and completed during class time. Work will be done in groups, but each student will need to complete their own class work sheet for the day. All work needs to be dated appropriately. When time allows, students will have the opportunity to earn extra credit by completing class work exercises on the board. Class Work Packets will be turned in on test days. 2

Math Lab Worksheets: roughout the semester, Math Lab worksheets will be assigned to help reinforce the topics covered on homework assignments. When a Math Lab worksheet is assigned, you may pick up the worksheet in the Math Lab in my box. I encourage you to sit in the lab and complete the worksheet. Tutors can assist you with any of the worksheet problems. When you are finished, you may go to the Math Lab counter to get your worksheet checked. If there are incorrect answers, you may go back and correct them. Once you have corrected all the problems, you may turn the worksheet in to one of the Math Lab workers at the counter. You also have the option of taking your worksheet home and coming in to the lab to get it checked. You will be graded on correct answers and the work shown. ALL NECESSARY WORK MUST BE SHOWN TO RECEIVE CREDIT. Tentative Exam Dates: Exam 1: day, February 25 Exam 2: day, March 25 Exam 3: day, April 8 Exam 4: day, May 6 Final Exam: ursday, May 22 Attendance: *Any changes to these dates will be announced in class. It is each student s responsibility to become aware of any such changes. Consistent attendance is strongly recommended in order to succeed in the class. Also, be on time!! Coming in late is disruptive to your fellow students. Coming in late or leaving early will be counted as half of an absence. Any student with more than four absences needs to contact me to avoid the possibility of being dropped from the course. However, it is each student s responsibility to drop if they choose to no longer participate. Make-up Policies: Homework: Homework due dates are listed on the class schedule, and are due by 12 pm on the listed due date. Homework submitted prior to the due date will earn full credit. You will be able to submit late homework for 75% credit up until the exam day related to that section. After that date, no credit will be given. Math Lab Worksheets: Math Lab worksheets are dropped off in the Math Lab after being corrected. Try to complete these worksheets PRIOR to the due date. e Math Lab will not accept any late Math Lab worksheets. Exams: As a general policy, I do not allow make-up exams. If an emergency occurs on the day of an exam, be sure to contact me that day and I may allow you to make it up. Documentation verifying your situation may be required, and there may be a grade deduction, depending on the circumstances. Students needing to take an exam early may do so if arrangements are made with me well in advance (at least one week prior to desired test date). Final Exam: e final exam is comprehensive and there will be no opportunity for a make-up exam. FULLERTON COLLEGE MATHEMATICS DIVISION SELECTED COLLEGE POLICIES ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY Students are expected to abide by ethical standards in preparing and presenting material which demonstrates their level of knowledge and which is used to determine grades. As cited in BP5500, A student who violates the standards of student conduct shall be subject to disciplinary action including, but not limited to, the removal, suspension or expulsion of the student. WAIT TIME FOR LATE INSTRUCTORS If, due to unforeseen emergencies, the instructor does not arrive at the scheduled start time for class, students are to wait for fifteen minutes (unless otherwise notified by the division). If they do not receive notification to wait for their instructor to arrive, after 15 minutes the students may leave with no penalty for absence or assigned work due for that class meeting. 6
