Welcome to the February 2016 Newsletter for Longfield Academy January seems to have passed very quickly and for some of our students they move ever closer to leaving the Academy and moving on to the next phase in their lives. DIARY Tues 23 February Academic Focus day For those year 11s who have applied to P16 here, we will be inviting them and parents/carers to an interview soon. For those who are undecided, please can they see their College Leadership Team to discuss options, as they need to prepare for onward progression. We have had some success with Post 16 students retaking GCSE maths and English last November (results received in January) and reaching this landmark pass is so important and comes as a massive relief to those involved. Students have to come in on their day off to study for these retakes so it makes sense to pass in Year 11 wherever possible. As one 6 th former said recently, I wish I had realised how important these two subjects are, I would have revised for them every day in Year 11. Well Year 11s you can start now! We would like to thank parents and carers for their endeavours to get students to the Academy on time and in correct uniform. We can clearly see standards have improved and recent visitors have commented on this. Unfortunately this is a topic that will always be under scrutiny and we ask that where uniform falls short of expectations that these are remedied as quickly as possible (within 48hrs) and that a dated letter is given to your child to help explain the situation and shown to their college leaders. Longfield Academy encourages all students to bring in a clear water bottle so they can drink throughout the day. There are free water cooling machines in each college and the Helix where students can top up during break and lunchtime. However we are concerned at the increasing number of students who appear to have forgotten the rule on energy drinks - they should not be brought into the academy. The reason is very simple: Energy Drinks such as Monster, Red Bull, Lucozade and Relentless combine sugar and caffeine in such high quantities that as evidence provided by The Food Standards Agency states consuming the drinks. could lead to effects such as increased excitability, irritability, hyperactivity, nervousness or anxiety as well as long term impact on behaviour, moods and weight. Some 500ml cans contain the equivalent of more than 13 teaspoons of sugar and 160mg of caffeine which is about the same as in four cans of cola. We are concerned that some children are even opting to have an energy drink for breakfast rather than something more nutritious like a bowl of cereal, toast or perhaps a muesli bar. A survey published in the autumn found that one in 20 teenagers goes to school on a can of energy drink. If these drinks are found on students they will be removed from them. The impact of such drinks is discussed in lessons such as technology, tutor time and we encourage students to discuss this with their parents/carers.
Lost an umbrella? Jacket? Watch? Sports bag? Come to reception! Students and parents are reminded that if any item is lost they should contact initially their college admin office and then reception. Items are stored for several months but we cannot store these forever! We are inundated with umbrellas, items of clothing - all unlabelled, and other items too numerous to mention. Those items not claimed by end of March will be disposed of and in most cases given to Charity.
Next term we will be taking up a new Maths Challenge! We will be using our maths skills to make fresh water available for those people in the world who live without clean water on a regular basis. The Well---Good website will be used by all students during Tutor time and maths lessons to collect points. The points can be exchanged for money that is used to provide fresh water for people in developing countries. So, using your times tables knowledge will buy Fresh water! The Maths Department look forward to success in increased maths knowledge AND fresh water provision! This year Longfield Academy are participating in the BBC School Report, to be held on the 10 March. The aim of this project is to allow students to be reporters for a day and provide an authentic audience for their journalism. Students can write news stories, or develop podcasts or broadcasts, which will then be linked to the BBC website. In preparation for Report Day, students had the opportunity to participate in a workshop with BBC Reporter Lauren Page. Lauren, who s background is in BBC Radio, explained to students what journalism is and the rules surrounding it. Students then developed pitches and found sources for stories they can write in preparation for Report Day. Lauren was really impressed with the enthusiasm of Longfield students and the range of topics and interests they held. Potential stories included: Young Carers in Kent, forensic policing, rare diseases, YouTube sensations, school uniform policy, amateur theatre and young peoples attitudes to dementia. Overall, the day was a huge success and the students are really excited to publish their reports on the 10 March. Miss Dixon Teacher of English
On 18 January,180 students along with 13 specialist mentors from a range of companies and organisations such as Tarmac spent an inspiring day learning about the impact of human activities on the environment and generating their own fresh ideas on how to improve matters for the future. Mentors travelled to us from as far away as Scotland! The day was made all the more interesting by the presence of 60 primary school students from Hartley and also Dartford Primary schools. The best ideas were presented to the whole group at the end and there were some very interesting and original projects such as an app to monitor car emissions. Students have the opportunity to continue with their ideas at afterschool sessions on Mondays in A001. Mr Lyons Teacher of Science
Is there life outside Earth? Can we join up with other civilians or are we alone? Well, a group of year 7 and 8 students experienced the opportunity to explore whether there could be life outside of Earth via sitting inside an astrodome and seeing for themselves what the universe holds and how we can tell if life does or could exist outside our planet. Miss Cripps PP Mentor Student s point of view by Amelia Pires De Miranda Being able to see and explore our universe using an application was an exhilarating experience to say the least and both students and staff were able to learn some interesting facts about space and the planet we live on as well as many other planets in our solar system. Pupils also had the opportunity to take the time to ask questions and learn about the universe and the Earth s place within it. The possibilities are endless as the universe is just getting bigger!!
We have had lots of brilliant entries into the Short Story Competition so far, and it is very exciting that this year, we will be entering our year 7s in the BBC Radio 2's 500 Words Competition. Unfortunately, we haven't had any year 7s submit their stories yet! Please hand your stories to either Mrs. Desforges in the LRC, or to Miss Williams in Matisse, by 25 February. Happy writing!
Over the Christmas holiday, we asked our language students from year 7 to year 10 to explore their environment and find items, shops, signs or anything else which contained foreign words or expressions. The MFL department was pleased to see that many students took up the challenge and it was hard to decide on a winner. In the end Miss Charles and her team chose James Black as the overall winner, with his creative and funny picture collage. 1st prize: James Black ( 2 voucher in Helix and ipad case), 2nd prize: Callum Button ( 1 voucher and a pen), 3rd prize: Thomas Wilkinson ( 1 voucher and a pen), 4th prize: Sasha Humphreys ( 1 voucher and a pen). As part of our diversity and acceptance of different cultures here at Longfield Academy, we have taken part in an activity surrounding the Chinese New Year celebrations. This year it fell on Monday 8 February and during that week we explored the difference between British and Chinese cultural differences of the New Year. 2016 is the year of the Monkey in China and as an Academy each of our tutor groups worked together to produce their own Monkey to be displayed proudly around the school. We also have the Helix staff preparing a full Chinese spread of food on Thursday the 11 February as part of the traditions on the new year celebrations. LONGFIELD ROTARY YOUNG CHEF The Rotary Club of Darent Valley held their annual Young Chef Competition at the Longfield Academy on 14 January. This is an early heat of the Rotary International Competition organised covering the whole of Great Britain and Ireland. The Judges, Rotarians Josie Morgan and Ricky Pristernik, were taxed by the high standard of the three course lunches delivered by four students but there could be only one winner. Jack Harris of Dartford was declared the winner and he will go onto the Rotary District Finals in Maidstone on 23 January 2016. Many congratulations Jack, and well done all the Young Chefs. Over 30 students have submitted university applications this year, to universities as far away as Liverpool, Leeds, Plymouth and Bristol, as well as more local ones including Kent and Canterbury Christchurch. The Year 13s have applied for subjects as diverse as Theoretical Physics, Medicine and Script Writing for film and television. At the moment the students are receiving offers from their chosen universities and clearly a number of students have really impressed the admissions tutors as they have received unconditional offers, these include; Georgia-Rae Fry - Accounting and Finance Kavi Keerthisingam - Pharmaceutical Science Jessica Murphy - English Literature Other students are currently applying for Art College as well as higher apprenticeships. Longfield Academy has developed strong links with Brands Hatch Place Hotel, one of the Hand Picked Hotels which provide our students with a very high quality 5* learning working environment. Brands Hatch Place Hotel have throughout the year provided our catering students with: Afternoon tea workshop Tour of kitchen and Meet the Chef workshop One week s work experience placement for every student on the professional catering course working alongside professional chefs Mentoring Demonstrations by Chef In addition Brands Hatch Place Hotel provide Business Mentoring for students to support their motivation, raise aspirations and achievement. The Telescope Bistro at Longfield Academy is a fine dining experience open to the public every Tuesday and Friday between 12 noon and 2.30pm, during term time. Bookings can be made on the academy website www.longfieldacademy.org or via telephone 01474 700 700 We seat up to 35 diners in each sitting, with a menu that offers choices for each course, including vegetarian options and cater for special diets with advance notice. We can also provide special menus for large group bookings on request. The 4 course meal (Starter, Mains, Dessert, Coffee/Tea and Petit Fours) costs just 12.95 All menus are designed, planned, prepared and served by our Professional Catering trainee chefs aged between 16-19 years of age and under the guidance of Chef Paul Plummer. The Business Mentor programme at Longfield Academy is aimed at Year 10/11 students who benefit from mentoring by local business partners. Mentors who include the management of Brands Hatch Place Hotel, of Longfield Waitrose, members of the Darenth Rotary Club and other professionals give up their time freely to meet with their mentees every month and plan mentoring activities. In January students visited the Brands Hatch Place Hotel for their most recent session to find out more about the workplace and understand more about their Mentors roles. Another group of students visited Lloyd's of London with their Mentors and had a guided tour of the amazing building and workplace. Other students were invited to visit Carillion Construction College in Sittingbourne to meet with the lecturers and explore the possibilities and opportunities for training, learning new skills, and employment within such a large organisation.
