The Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia (IUSS) offers international advanced undergraduate and graduate (Masters and PhD) programs. Innovative. Internationally planned. Open minded. The Institute for Advanced Study of Pavia was established in 1997 as a joint venture between the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research, the University of Pavia, the historical Colleges of Pavia (Borromeo, Ghislieri, Nuovo, Santa Caterina da Siena) and the Institute for the Right to University Study (ISU). Due to the excellent level of the activities promoted and carried out, on the 8th of July 2005 the Institute was recognized as a "Scuola Superiore ad ordinamento speciale" by the Ministry of Education, University and Research. The Cooperation and Development School is a shared initiative of the IUSS, CICOPS (Interdepartmental Center for Cooperation with Developing Countries, University of Pavia) and three non-governmental organizations: CISP (International Committee for the Development of Peoples, Rome), VIS (International Voluntary Service for Development, Rome), and COOPI (International Cooperation, Milan). It benefits from the support of: Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research; Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs - Directorate General for Development and Cooperation; Compagnia di San Paolo, Turin; Tavola Valdese, Rome; Banca Regionale Europea, Pavia; Province of Pavia. The School offers two Master Programs for the academic year 2006/2007: The 10 th International Master Program in Cooperation and Development The 6 th International Master Program in Cooperation and International Economic Integration The official location of the School is the Collegio S. Caterina da Siena, one of Pavia University Colleges which is located in the historical center of the town. THE 10 TH INTERNATIONAL MASTER PROGRAM IN COOPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT AIMS The Master in Cooperation and Development aims at training professionals in the field of international cooperation. Students are prepared to work in several institutions which operate in the area of cooperation and development, such as International Organizations, Governmental Institutions, firms working in Developing Countries, Public Institutions, NGOs and other non-profit organizations working in the field of international cooperation. 2
MASTER PROGRAM The Master lasts 15 months, it will begin on November 8 th 2006 and will finish in January 2008. This is a full-time Master which includes a residential period in Pavia, from November 2006 to June 2007 and a period of internship which will take place indicatively from July 2007 to December 2007, lasting at least 3 months. During the residential period in Pavia the Program foresees 600 hours of classes and 180 hours of workshop and tutoring. The fall term includes preliminary courses on basic economics. The winter term and the spring term are dedicated to core courses in the area of Economics, Human and Institutional Studies and Project Management. Each term concludes with a compulsory test. Topics related to Project Cycle Management are taught mainly by professionals of three Italian NGOs: CISP, COOPI and VIS which are full members of the School. An internship period follows the lectures in Pavia. The internship implies a working experience either with an NGO or with an International Organization. It lasts at least three months and involves participation in a project in a Developing Country or planning and research activities in the headquarters of the Organizations. In the final part of the program students must write a thesis related to topics studied and activities realized during the internship. The thesis is then discussed in Pavia and students, upon approval of exams and of this final report, are granted the Master Degree. THE 6 TH INTERNATIONAL MASTER PROGRAM IN COOPERATION AND INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIC INTEGRATION AIMS The Master in Cooperation and International Economic Integration aims at preparing professionals specialised in bilateral and multilateral co-operation, with a particular focus on economic cooperation and international trade. The students of this program will have both field experience and a strong theoretical background with particular skills in cooperation and international economic integration. MASTER PROGRAM The training program includes advanced topics in economics, mainly mathematics and quantitative methods, microeconomics and macroeconomics, econometrics, international economics and development economics. The program lasts 8 months, from November 2006 to June 2007. It consists of specific lectures and training, partly in collaboration with the PhD programme in Economics. It is possible, upon request of students, to do an internship during the period from July to November 2007. ADMISSION Master in Cooperation and Development: Each year 30 students of any nationality are admitted to the Master. Italian students must be in possession of an Italian Laurea Specialistica in any subject. For foreign students the degree will be evaluated case by case. The applicant has to show English proficiency, providing necessary documentation. There is no age limit. 3
Fees for the academic Year 2006/2007 are 5.000,00 Euros. Master in Cooperation and International Economic Integration: Each year 10 students of any nationality are admitted to the Program. Applicants must: either have completed or be in the process of completing the Master in Cooperation and Development; or have a degree equivalent to the Master in Cooperation and Development, to be evaluated by the Scientific Committee of the School. Fees for the academic year 2006/2007 are 3.500,00 Euros For both Masters, applications must be submitted through the official application form, which can be downloaded from the School website at www.unipv.it/iuss/esascs/ or requested from the School Secretariat. The application for admission must include: - university diploma and grades transcript; - one (maximum two) letter of reference; - documents attesting English proficiency; - any other degree, document or letter considered to be relevant; - for those applying for a scholarship: a copy of family income statement (and of personal income statement) for the year 2005 Three types of scholarships are available: A) Scholarships to help with costs for residence in Pavia, particularly at university Colleges; B) Scholarships with partial exemption from fees; C) Scholarships with total exemption from fees (available to a very limited number of students). In some cases A) may be added either to B) or to C). Students will be informed as to whether or not they have received a scholarship upon notification of admission to the program. These scholarships are awarded based both on merit and on analysis of the financial situation of the candidate in question. The Scientific Committee of the School will be in charge of selecting scholarship recipients. Its decision will be final and indisputable. A first deadline for overseas students is scheduled on 30 th June 2006. The final deadline for Italian applicants is scheduled on 30 th September 2006. The admission process is divided into two phases: a) pre-selection based on the candidate's application and academic qualifications; b) an interview with the candidate, designed also to evaluate the attitude to the program and to be held in Pavia on 17 th and 18 th October 2006. Overseas candidates may make special arrangements for their interviews with the School Direction.
