Program Materials Imagine It!, an Open Court Reading program, is a comprehensive Reading and Language Arts program. The program contains all the materials necessary to ensure success for both the teachers and the students. Component Description/Features Photo Teacher s Editions (Pre-K 6) Grade Pre-K: 5 Teacher Editions (2 units per Teacher Edition) K and 1: 10 Teacher Editions at each grade level Grades 2-6: 6 Teacher Editions at each grade level Each Teacher s Edition focuses on a specific theme and depending upon the grade level, contains explicit, systematic instruction in phonemic awareness, print and book awareness, alphabetic knowledge, phonics, fluency, word structure, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling and writing, appropriate to the specific grade level. Big Books/Little Books (Pre-K 1) Grade Pre-K: 8, K: 12 Grade 1: 11 Big Books encourage young students to interact with fine literature, explore concepts of book and print awareness, expand vocabulary knowledge, and develop listening comprehension. Big Books come in an easy to use Canvas Tote. Little Book versions of the Big Books (identical in every way except size) are a resource for students to read independently or in small groups during Workshop. Grade 1 unit 1 Student Readers (1 6) Grades 1-3: 2 per grade level Grades 4-6: 1 per grade level Each Student Reader contains literature, fiction and non-fiction, as well as poetry, which is organized into themes. The literature at all grade levels represents the diversity of our society. In addition, expository selections in science and social studies teach students to read in the content areas, and reinforce key state science and social studies standards. First Reader (Grade 1, Units 5 and 6) Getting Started Reader (Grade 2) The First Reader helps students in Grade 1 make the transition from controlled decodable text to the authentic literature in the Student Readers. The Getting Started Reader in Grade 2 offers extra support and additional fluency practice for students as they transition from first to second grade. Pre-Decodable and Decodable Stories (K 3) Pre-Decodable Stories help students at Pre-K, K, and Grade 1 learn about concepts of books and print, and practice reading essential high-frequency sight words. Decodable stories provide fluency practice through totally controlled, connected text. Grade Pre-K: 20 Grade K: 35 Grade 1 Core Set: 115, Grade 1 Practice Set: 80 Grade 2: 7 Books, each containing multiple decodable stories Grade 3: 4 Books, each containing multiple decodable stories Grade 1 First Reader Grade 2 Getting Started Phonemic Awareness and Phonics Kits (Pre-K 3) Phonemic awareness and phonics instruction and review play a crucial role in Imagine It!, especially in the primary grades. Components include alphabet and phonics cards, game mats, writeon/wipe-off boards with magnetic uppercase and lowercase letters, and other items to support instruction. Willy the Wisher ( Grade K) Willy the Wisher stories help kindergarteners develop listening, comprehension and thinking skills, and provide a natural opportunity for building oral language. Trade Books (Pre-K) Component Description/Features Photo Each unit has three trade books used to build listening comprehension and vocabulary and to develop book and print concepts. Read-Aloud Collections (Pre-K 6) Story Time Selections (K): 10 Books Each unit begins with a teacher read-aloud that introduces students to the theme concept and builds background while providing a model of fluent reading. Grades K and 1: 10 Books Grades 2-3: 6 Books Grades 4-6: Read-Aloud Anthology (each of which includes 6 stories) Additional teacher read-aloud books are used as a culminating activity for each kindergarten unit, and ties together what the students have been learning. Sample Grade 1 Sample Leveled Readers for Fluency, Comprehension, and Vocabulary (1-6) Fluency Readers correlated to each theme at each grade level provide practice at different independent reading levels for building fluency. They can be used for independent reading or in small instructional groups. For each grade, there are books above, on, and approaching grade level as well as books for English Learners. In addition, there is support for second language learners. While the focus of these readers is to build fluency, students also work on developing background, vocabulary, and comprehension. Teacher/Author Contest Readers (Pre-K 6) Taken from winners of the SRA Teacher/Author contest, these stories and poems match the unit themes and give teachers an opportunity to share their talents with Imagine It! users. English: 8 Books-1 per grade level Spanish: 8 Books-1 per grade level Poetry: 1 Book includes 1 poem for each grade level Language Arts Big Book (K 1) The Language Arts Big Books are designed to present essential language arts and writing skills in an engaging and developmentally appropriate manner to young students. Poetry Anthology Language Arts Handbook (2 6) Lessons in writing, grammar, and mechanics provide students a reference book to learn about and check critical writing, revising, and editing skills. The Language Arts Handbook is an integral part of the writing lessons. Grade 1 Transparencies (K 6) Home Connection (Pre-K 6) Overhead transparencies support group instruction for comprehension, writing, vocabulary, handwriting, and grammar lessons in the program. Grade K: 57 Grade 1: 175 Grade 2: 225 Grade 3: 288 Grade 4: 222 Grade 5: 270 Grade 6: 190 Letters in both English and Spanish for families enhance and strengthen their child s learning. Letters include information on reading strategies and skills, routines, commonly used reading definitions, and additional practice activities. Suggestions for family projects are included. Sound and Letter Lesson Cards (K) Preparing to Read Lesson Cards (1 6) Science & Social Studies Lap Books (K) All phonics and word knowledge lessons in Grades K 6 are available on convenient reference cards for teachers to use during instruction. Curriculum Connections Activities for Science, Social Studies, Math, and Art and Artists include leveled reading passages that can be used for differentiated instruction and guided reading. These support students reading at their instructional level and encourage students working in small groups or independently on cross-curricular activities. Comprehension, vocabulary and word study activities can be selfchecked. This kit also includes opportunities for functional reading which is commonly found in high stakes testing. There is a Teacher s Guide for each of the Curriculum Connections. Grade 1: 160 Activities (with 3 copies of each activity card) Grades 2-6: 96 Activities per grade level (with 3 copies of each activity card) Workshop Kits (Pre-K 6) Workshop kits include a variety of manipulatives and games for differentiating instruction. There is one kit per grade level. Examples of what is included in these kits are an individual pocket chart, magnetic letters, foam letters, letter cubes, letter cards, generic game boards, tokens, and game cards (1-6) for each grade level to help students practice phonics, grammar, usage, mechanics, spelling, and other skills. Skills Workbooks (K 6) Depending upon the grade level, students practice the following skills: Alphabet Knowledge Phonemic Awareness Inquiry Phonics Comprehension Spelling Vocabulary Writing Grammar, Mechanics, and Usage There are two Skills Workbooks at each grade level, one for each half of the year, have all the skill sheets conveniently organized by lesson. These skill sheets provide students the opportunity to practice and apply the skills they are learning. These workbooks are an integral part of instruction. Differentiating Instruction Challenge Activities (K-6) Each Skills Workbook is available in three formats Workbook, Blackline Master (BLM), and Annotated Teacher s Edition (ATE). Each lesson in the grade level program has a corresponding Challenge activity to help students stretch to the next level of understanding. Grade 2 Workbook Challenge Novels (4-6) A trade book is available for each unit with a lesson for each book. These books connect to the unit theme and provide the opportunity for students to read complete trade books, Challenge Novels include a variety of fiction and non-fiction books. Reteach (K-6) (Workbook, BLM, and ATE) Each lesson in the grade level program has a corresponding Reteach activity for those students needing extra practice and support. Support Activities (K-6) (Workbook and ATE) Designed for use during Workshop, workbooks provide quick support and extension activities for students. Grade 6 Annotated Teacher s Edition Intervention (K-6) Imagine It! provides a full in-program intervention program to help those students needing additional help in accessing and using the core program. Components include: Intervention Guide: Lesson-by-lesson instructional support for the core program lessons. These support lessons are designed for use during Workshop, either with the regular classroom teacher or a teacher s aide. Intervention Workbook (BLM and ATE) Activities provide practice and support for lessons presented in the Prevention or Intervention Guide. Grade 2 Workbook Grade K Page 8

Reading Intervention Kit Classroom Kit that provides strategic intervention lessons for skills in the five key technical domains of reading: phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The kit is intended for use with small groups of students who need additional instruction and practice in one or all of these areas. Components of the kit include: Activity Cards in the five key technical areas (90 lessons per key area) Teacher s Guide Decodable Takehome Individual Sound/Spelling Cards Pocket Chart Picture Cards Songs and Rhymes CD English Learner Support (K-6) Imagine It! provides help to ensure that second language students can be successful in the core program by pre-teaching critical skills, vocabulary and content. Components include: English Learner Support Guide: Lesson-by-lesson support is provided for the instruction presented in the regular program. English Learner Support Activities (Workbook, BLM, and ATE) Additional practice and support is included for each lesson in the English Learner Support Guide. English Learner Glossary Compiled from abstract English words found in the Imagine It! program. Designed to assist the ESL student, or any teacher, in explaining the meanings of these English Words. Newcomer English Language Development BLM and CD-ROM (1 book for PreK-6) Lessons for non English speaking students who are new to the country and need survival Vocabulary in three main areas: Personal, School, and Community. Lessons contain an introduction, a guided practice section, an apply section, and take-home pages. In addition to the visuals present on the take-home the Photo Library CD includes images that relate to lesson topics that can be printed out and used throughout most of the lessons. Photo Library K-6 Grade specific photo library cards that help visual and English Language learners build strong vocabulary and oral language skills with collections of original photographs and terms translated in 11 key languages. Intensive Vocabulary Kit K-3 Designed to enhance the Imagine It! vocabulary strand and to increase the vocabulary knowledge of students who require extra support. Components of the kit include read aloud anthology, teacher s resource book, and vocabulary picture cards. Lessons provide fifteen to twenty minutes of daily vocabulary instruction and include a weekly instructional plan and suggested extension activities. Grade 5 Grade 1 Page 10

Assessment Lesson Assessment (Pre-K 6) Assessment is an integral part of Imagine It! The Assessment ranges from initial diagnosis to continuing formal and informal checks of progress to final summative measures of overall learning. Lesson Assessments measure learning in key instructional areas appropriate to each grade level. Depending upon the grade level, there are measures for comprehension, selection vocabulary, spelling, and oral fluency. In Pre-K, assessment is more observational than formal. These assessments provide exposure to and practice in standardized test-taking formats as well as those formats used in DIBELS and TPRI. Benchmark Assessment (K 6) Benchmark Assessments, authored by Doug and Lynn Fuchs, serve as a predictor of success on state and other high-stakes tests. These assessments are administered at the beginning of each year and every 6 weeks thereafter. Grade 5 Assessment BLM CD-ROM (K 6) Blackline Masters of the Assessments can be printed off the CD. eassess Online (1 6) (See technology section for CD version) State-Specific Materials (K 6) (Customized Tabs) Real-time assessment information can be retrieved from all program assessments and tracked over time by student, class, building, and district levels. Questions correlated to state standards help gauge student readiness for state tests. Based on test data, teachers can individualize instruction to match the performance level of each student. Hand-held technology can be incorporated with Online Assessment for easier teacher tracking. Online Progress Reporter: Allows for fast test-building with immediate scoring and data collection. Create a test by state standard and build using a state test format. Standards Reports, graphical reports, and instruction planner reports provide for valuable remediation on state standards Question Banks consist of Lesson Assessment questions. Students can take test on computer or paper. System can score all but S/A questions. State-specific tabs are inserted into Teacher s Editions to include state standards at point of use.
