West Loop Rm: 136 - Friday 5:45pm 10:00pm Course Description IMED 2315 is an advanced class in Web Design where we explore: 1. Designing and developing server-side web pages that incorporate text, graphics, and other supporting elements using current technologies and authoring tools. 2. Joomla CMS The Joomla Content Management System. WordPress CMS The WordPress Content Management System. 3. CMS Templates We explore the use of a simple HTML and CSS to alter the appearance of CMS templates. 4. Images and Text Controlling images and text within a CMS 5. Users Managing 1-1,000 online users permissions and privileges. 6. Databases - Creating database tables and linking to user accounts. Course Semester Credit Hours (SCH) (lecture, lab) Credit and Lecture 96.00 hrs; External Hours: 48 hours Note: 1 hour of classroom instruction equates to a minimum of 1.5 hours of out-of-class student work each week. External hours of student work may include assignments, research, exam certification practice, and/or field trips. Student Learning Outcomes The student will be able to: 1. Identify how the Internet functions with specific attention to the World Wide Web and file transfer. 2. Apply the latest security techniques to secure files inside a CMS. 3. Apply design techniques in the creation and optimization of graphics and other embedded objects inside a CMS. 4. Demonstrate the use of HTML and CSS (W3C) formatting and layout standards to create pages inside a CMS. 5. Test, and maintain a CMS Web site with multiple visitors Learning Objectives Students will: Identify how the Internet functions with specific attention to the World Wide Web and file transfer. 1. Practice locating Web folders and files inside a remote online directory. 2. Practice creating files and images in a local folder, then uploading files to the Internet to a remote folder. 3. Practice using FTP client software to upload files to remote servers, then making a note of the URLs. 4. Emailing, and pasting URLs to the instructor as required. Apply design techniques in the creation and optimization of graphics and other embedded objects. 5. Involve the placement of graphics such as logos, photographs and drawings into tutorial and individual projects. 6. Ensure that images are saved in the correct format appropriate to its type and usage. 7. Make the image in its original file of the dimension desired for use on the Web page, and save it to as small a file size as possible while maintaining high display resolution. Demonstrate the use of World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) formatting and layout standards.

IMED 2315 page 9 Discussion Board Mandatory Participation-Required Substantive Feedbacks/Critiques to Peers Final Project Presentation - The final project will consist of the following: 1. Webpage Project (80% of Final grade) Redesigning, editing & updating all your assignment pages from the Lessons in class using the tools inside Joomla! and CSS and XML. Improving upon the Midterm Project template to create an enhanced Final Project. This project/website will be presented to the class as a presentation for part of the student's total grade. Also a folder with printouts of all the webpages and a CD of ALL the webpage files will be submitted at the time of the presentation. This will be a "presentation" that would be of the quality that one would give to a prospective client or employment interview. No Late Submissions - if you fail to present - you will receive an "F" for this portion of the final...no exceptions. 2. Student Critiquing/Peer Review Mandatory Participation for Class Final Presentations (10% of Final Grade) Required Substantive Feedbacks/Critiques to Peers on Final Project (Please note that the schedule is subject to change at any time, you need regularly to check your email/eagle Online discussion board for new changes)

IMED 2315 page 10 Instructional Methods Web-enhanced (49% or less) and Face to Face. This course is part online course combining instructions and lectures, Forum discussions (Q&A), and teacher examples. Each project has a reasonable amount of lab time to allow student time to use labs or libraries. As a student wanting to complete IMED 2315, it is your responsibility to read the textbook, submit assignments on the due dates, study for the exams, participate in online activities and class discussions, and enjoy yourself while experiencing the real world of education. As I believe that engaging the students in the learning is essential for success in this class, you will spend the majority of class time practicing HTML, and completing your class projects on your own. You should try to be involved in discussions with your classmates and your instructor. As you will want to contribute to these discussions, you will need to visit our Eagle Online page and be prepared to discuss, analyze and evaluate information from your text and other assigned readings. Student Joomla Assignments Assignments in the Joomla CMS have been developed that will enhance your learning. To better understand a topic, a Lecture (32 Lecture hrs.) will be given on assignments on key information that you will need to remember for your success in your career as a designer. Students will be required to successfully complete the following: 1. Demonstrate ability to select and apply industry standard software in design. 2. Design and demonstrate use of software and techniques in Digital Communication s practical applications. 3. Develop a portfolio of work that demonstrates proficiency in skills for employment. 4. Present a portfolio of work that demonstrates proficiency in skills for employment. 5. Identify how the Internet functions with specific attention to the World Wide Web and file transfer. 6. Apply design techniques in the creation and optimization of graphics and other embedded objects. 7. Demonstrate the use of World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) formatting and layout standards. 8. Design, create, test, and maintain a Web site: In IMED 2315 Web Page Design 2 students are required to get: Web Hosting, and Domain Name Hosting. Completed assignments are hosted online for grading. Assignment files are submitted to Eagle Online for grading. I require you to submit assignments, and host your files by the due dates. Late assignments will lose a 1 point for each day it is late.

IMED 2315 page 11 Weekly Joomla CMS Assignments (40%) The Joomla CMS tutorials serve as practice of the concepts covered in class. Completion of these tutorial lessons is required, they include: 1. Lessons on styling text within a CMS. 2. Lessons on changing background colors inside CMS templates. 3. Lessons on file and folder organization. Midterm Web Site (Midterm Review) (25%) Students are require to create a web site during the first half of the semester. The website should consist of the few lessons already learned while doing Joomla Tutorials and practicing different techniques using Joomla CMS. Each student s project must be on your hosting service and ready for presentation at the beginning of the class session. Midterm review of this website is required (instructions will be given). Final Web Site (Final Review) (35%) Students are require to create a new web site during the last half of the semester. The new website pages should consist of the final lessons already learned while doing the Joomla Tutorials and practicing different techniques using Joomla CMS. Each student s final project must be on your hosting service and ready for presentation at the beginning of the class session. Final review of this website is required (instructions will be given).
