42 Selection Review #1 Pages 4-19 1. In 2007, Barack Obama had a big goal. What was it? In 2007, Barack Obama s big goal was to become the first African-American president of the United States. 2. Explain why Barack Obama s family background is unusual. Barack Obama s parents came from different races and cultures. His father was an African from Kenya. His mother was a white American from Kansas. They met at the University of Hawaii when they were both students there. When they got married, there were very few marriages between white people and black people. 3. Tell about Barack s relationship with his father, Barack Sr. Barack did not spend much time with his father when he was a young child. His parents separated when he was only two years old. His father went back to Africa. Barack only knew him through letters, pictures, and stories. Barack s father visited him in Hawaii just once when he wa ten years old. He stayed for a month. They spent time together and became friends. 4. Describe the time that Barack s family lived in Indonesia. Barack s family moved to Indonesia when he was six. His mother had married a man from Indonesia named Lolo. They lived outside the capital city. They had lots of animals around. Barack had a baby sister named Maya. His stepdad, Lolo, treated him like a son. 5. Why did Barack s mom send him back to Hawaii to stay with his grandparents? Barack s mom sent him to Hawaii to go to a better school. She did not think the schools in Indonesia were very good.

He wanted to help poor people have better lives. 4. Explain why Obama went to law school. Obama thought fairer laws would help people have better lives. He wanted to learn about the law so that he could help change it. 5. Tell how Obama s life and work changed after he finished law school. After law school, Obama moved back to Chicago. He got married. He began working as a lawyer and helped people fight for fair treatment. He taught at a law school. He decided to run for office as an Illinois state senator.

List several issues that were important to Barack Obama, both when he was an Illinois state senator and in the U.S. Senate. Barack Obama worked hard to improve life for prisoners, to change laws on health care, and to give young children a chance to go to school. He also spoke out against the U.S. war in Iraq. 3. What did people notice about Barack Obama when he gave his speech at the Democratic national convention? When Barack Obama spoke, people noticed that he was very bright. He cared about people s problems. He was able to understand and connect with all kinds of people. 4. But Barack Obama was the first one to be nominated by a major political party.

Tell some ways that Obama kept in touch with his family while he was campaigning to become President. While he was traveling, Obama called home every evening to tell his wife and daughters good night. He also took a short break to visit his grandmother in Hawaii. 4. List some of the problems that faced the country in the weeks right before the 2008 election. These are some of the problems that the country faced at that time. Many banks were closing. The stock market was very bad. People were losing their homes. Many people lost their jobs. The Iraq war was still going on, and soldiers were still dying there. 5. List some of the reasons why Obama may have won the election by such a huge margin. There are many possible reasons; here are some of them: Barack Obama was a good speaker who connected well with different kinds of people. Voters thought new leaders could help the country solve the serious problems it faced. Many people were also excited about the chance to elect the first African-American President of the United States.
