PROSPECTUS Centre for Development Studies Thiruvananthapuram ADMISSION 2018 MA Applied Economics Centre for Development Studies (CDS) invites applications for its MA programme in Applied Economics for the academic year 2018-2019. The programme will commence on Thursday, July 26, 2018. Admission is open to Indian nationals as well as students from SAARC countries. Twenty seats are available for students from India and five seats are for students from SAARC countries. This prospectus provides details about the admission to the programme. 1. About the programme MA (Applied Economics) at CDS is a unique programme that aims at providing rigorous training in theory, tools and methods for applied economic analysis, with a special focus on issues of economic development. The degree is awarded by Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Selected MA students will join a vibrant research community at CDS, comprising faculty, research scholars and visitors, working on various facets of development with an inter-disciplinary framework. Training in applied economics is expected to prepare students for careers in academia, government, national and international development agencies, research institutions, the corporate sector and the media. 2. Course Structure: Students are required to complete sixteen courses: nine compulsory and seven optional courses as listed below. One compulsory course in the fourth semester is a project in which the student works on an empirical issue relating to India s economy under faculty supervision. Please note that all optional courses mentioned below may not be offered every year: 1

Certificate courses recently offered include the following: 1. Financial Econometrics 2. Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy 3. Advanced Economic Theory 4. R Programme 5. Methods for Impact Evaluation 3. Scholarship for students from SAARC Countries. With the funding from Kerala government, CDS provides five scholarships to students from SAARC countries who enroll in the MA programme. This year (2018-19) five scholarships are available and will be given to one student from each of the five SAARC countries Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka. If there is no candidate from a country, a candidate from another country will be selected on the basis merit. Monthly Scholarship of Rs. 15,000 will provided to each SAARC student which usually covers Course fee and other fees, boarding, lodging at the CDS hostel and Medical insurance apart from study materials for the entire duration of the course (including holidays). The scholarship does not cover travel expenses to and from the Centre to the home countries 2

4. Eligibility: 4.1 For students from India A bachelor s degree in any discipline under 10+2+3 pattern, with at least 50 percentage of marks. Candidates from SC, ST & Persons with Disability (PWD) (with 40% disability) are eligible irrespective of percentage of marks secured in the qualifying degree. Those who are appearing for their final examination may also apply. Such candidates, if selected, shall be allowed to join the programme only if they have secured the minimum prescribed percentage of marks in their qualifying examination at the time of registration to the programme. They should also submit the final mark sheets of the qualifying examination at the time of registration to the programme. 4.2 For Students from SAARC Countries The candidate must have a Bachelor s/undergraduate degree (three year programme) with English as the medium of instruction and the three year undergraduate programme must be equivalent to an undergraduate programme of an Indian university. All certificates provided by the candidate must be Apostille certified before joining 5 5. Fees MA students must pay a tuition fee of Rs. 8000/- (Rs.2000/-for SC/ST) per semester and a one-time JNU Registration/ Enrolment fees of Rs. 6115/-. All students will be provided hostel accommodation on a shared basis. There are hostels for men and women on campus. All rooms have attached bath and are modestly furnished. CDS hostel rent is Rs.200/- per person per month, which includes charges for electricity and water. All hostel residents are expected to have their meals at the cafeteria where simple and nutritious food is served. They are required to pay their mess bill monthly basis. 6. Admission The application form and admission procedure are separate for students from Indian and those from five SAARC countries mentioned above. 6.1 For students from India Admission is based on an entrance test scheduled on Sunday, May 20 th 2018 from 10.00 am to 12.00 noon at Hyderabad, Kolkata, Kozhikode, New Delhi, Pune & Thiruvananthapuram. No TA/DA will be provided for attending the Entrance Test. The candidates are advised to make their own arrangements for travel and lodging to attend the Entrance Test. 3

6.2 For students from SAARC Countries. Separate application form is available for students from SAARC countries, which can be downloaded from our website: www.cds.edu. Scanned copy of the filled up and signed application form should be send to the email address: admission@cds.edu as an attachment with MA-SAARC on the subject line before April 11, 2018. Short listed applicants will be interviewed over Skype or telephone between 4 th - 10 th May. The candidates should also keep scanned copies of their mark list/grades sheets for later detailed verification before Skype/telephonic interview. 7. Reservation Statutory reservation for candidates from India belonging to SC, ST, OBC (NCL) & Persons with Disability (PWD) ( 40% disability) as per Govt. of India rules. Reservation is applicable to only 20 seats earmarked for students from India. 8. Details on entrance test 8.1 Candidates will be tested for their analytical ability and aptitude. They are expected to be familiar with the course content of a standard Economics programme taught at the undergraduate (BA) level. They are also expected to be aware of current national and international economic issues of importance. An illustrative list of areas to be covered is given below, for the benefit especially of candidates without an undergraduate degree in Economics. 1) Microeconomics (Theories of consumer behaviour, production and the firm) 2) Macroeconomics (National Income, Theory of Income determination, Monetary Policy, Trade and Balance of Payments) 3) Statistics and Mathematics: Descriptive Statistics (Mean, Median and Mode, Standard Deviation, Correlation coefficient). Elementary Probability Theory, Mathematics for economists (Elementary Algebra, Coordinate Geometry and Elementary Calculus). 4) India s economy in the post liberalized period The entrance test question paper consists of 50 questions. Each question will have multiple choice answers. There will be negative marking for incorrect answers. Each correct answer will carry two marks and each incorrect -1 marks. Of the 50 questions, 25 will be based on five passages (five questions from each passage). The duration of the entrance examination is two hours and maximum marks will be 100. Prospective candidates may find past question papers of the entrance examination on our website (http://cds.edu). 4

8.2 Minimum Marks to be obtained in the written test in order to be eligible for selection General Category 40% OBC (NCL) - 36% SC/ST/PWD - 25% 9. How to Apply 9.1 Candidates from India Completed application is to be submitted in the prescribed Format (Application form with Hall ticket) along with Copies of mark-sheets for Bachelor s degree (latest available) Age Proof- SSLC Certificate or any other relevant document. Candidates belonging to the following categories should submit self attested copies of latest relevant certificates issued from competent authorities 1. SC/ST candidates - caste certificate 2. OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates - OBC (non-creamy layer) certificate 3. Person with Disability (PWD) (with 40% disability) candidates PWD certificate Candidates working in Government Departments and Public sector undertakings must forward their application through proper channel along with a no objection certificate from the competent authority. However, an advance copy may be submitted, if they expect procedural delays Application Fee of Rs. 300, in the form of a DD drawn from State Bank of India (SBI) only in favour of the Centre for Development Studies, payable at Thiruvananthapuram (SBI Thiruvananthapuram Medical College Branch Code- 070029). The application fee is non-refundable. SC, ST and PWD (with 40% disability) applicants are exempted from payment of the application fee. Duly filled application form along with self attested copies of the above documents should be sent to Academic Programme Office, Centre for Development Studies, Ulloor, Medical College P.O, Thiruvananthapuram 695 011, Kerala with the words Application for MA Admission- 2018 superscribed on the cover. The application must reach the Academic Programme Office, Centre for Development Studies on or before APRIL 11, 2018. After announcing the results of the entrance test on the CDS website most probably in the fourth week of June, all communication from CDS to the selected candidates will be through e-mail only. 5
