4 5 Charles de Gaulle Trust Language learning and cultural immersion; The Charles de Gaulle Trust offers exciting opportunities for young people in the UK and France to work together on joint curriculum projects and to host reciprocal visits for young people aged 17-19. The trust awards grants of 5,000 per school, encouraging groups of young people aged 17-19 and educators to visit partner institutions. By immersing themselves in the culture of another country, young people develop language skills, and enhance their employability and vocational skills, and educators have the opportunity to learn from different education practices. charlesdegaulle.trust@britishcouncil.org China Bridge Professional development; China Bridge provides an opportunity for UK head teachers to embark on a week-long professional development visit to China. This is a unique opportunity to network, establish a school link in China, inspire schools to learn Mandarin and introduce Chinese culture into their curriculum. For Welsh participants, all costs are covered by Hanban, the public institution affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Welsh Government. Chinese Language Assistants Language learning and cultural immersion; The Chinese Language Assistants programme offers assistance in the field of language teaching and learning in the UK and abroad. The assistants are qualified and experienced teachers or teaching graduates with at least one year s experience of teaching overseas. Language assistants can help introduce language learning to students, providing cultural awareness and language learning skills in a way that can only be gained from a native speaker, and are a real benefit in supporting the internationalisation of the classroom and the school curriculum. Grant funding is available to schools in Wales, to cover the full costs of hosting a Chinese Language Assistant for one academic year, supported by Hanban, the public institution affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Welsh Government.

6 7 Connecting Classrooms Professional development; Connecting Classrooms is a global education programme which focuses on the core skills young people need to thrive in work and life in the 21st century. The programme closely supports the teaching of wider skills across the curriculum in Wales and the implementation of the new Digital Competence Framework. Teachers can access fully funded professional development and international collaboration opportunities, allowing professionals to meet and share best practice with counterparts in the UK and overseas. The first part of the journey is to learn more about teaching core skills. In Wales, two core skills courses, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving and Digital Literacy are currently being offered. In the next stage, participants can apply for a professional partnership with an overseas school and a 3,000 grant to collaborate and work together on a joint project, bringing an international element to the classroom. Schools@britishcouncil.org Information on core skills courses available in Wales is on the website of our training partner, Think Learn Challenge: go to www.thinklearnchallenge.com and follow the link to Connecting Classrooms. Erasmus+ Language learning and cultural immersion; professional development Erasmus+ is the European Union programme offering education, training, youth and sport opportunities for European citizens. The programme provides funding for school partnerships and professional development for staff within 27 EU countries and five non EU countries. Erasmus+ aims to modernise education, training and youth work across Europe. It is open to education, training, youth and sport organisations across all sectors of lifelong learning, including school education, further and higher education, adult education and the youth sector. Funding opportunities for school partnerships fall within Key Action 2, where collaboration and linking between schools is encouraged in order to tackle particular issues related to school education. Past partnerships have explored improving teaching standards, promoting global citizenship, improving basic skills and developing entrepreneurship. Collaborations can either operate at a school to school level or applications can be made by local and regional authorities and others working in the field of school education. www.erasmusplus.org.uk or contact: erasmusplus.enquiries@britishcouncil.org Opportunities under Key Action 1 emphasise school staff mobility, allowing staff to undertake professional development and gain work experience in an international environment by taking part in mobility of up to two months. These opportunities can include studying courses, taking part in job shadowing and observation or undertaking a teaching placement.
