This course is presents algebraic skills for MAC 1105. Topics include linear equations and inequalities in two variables and their graphs, systems of linear equations and inequalities, introduction to functions, factoring, algebraic functions, rational equations, radical and rational exponents, complex numbers, quadratic equations, scientific notation, applications of the above topics and the communication of mathematics. Applications emphasizing connections with disciplines and the real world will be included. OUTLINE This course will be divided into four units. Below is a schedule showing the approximate content and tentative test dates. Exact test dates will be announced in class. Only selected parts of the chapters will be covered. TIME COMMITMENT Note that any college course requires at least two hours of study-time for every lecture hour. Thus, you should allocate at least another six hours a week on "study-time activities" such as reading your textbook and working on assigned homework. GRADING POLICY Homework and Quizzes 20% Class Participation and Attendance 10% Four Progress Tests 40% Final Exam 20% Lab Participation and Attendance 10% Total Percentage 100% EVALUATION POLICY Your final letter grade will be determined according to the scale as follows: A B 90% 100% B 80% - 89% C 70% - 79% D 60 69% F 0 59% MAKE UP POLICY If a scheduled test/quiz is missed because of a medical emergency or legal situation, your final exam grade/last quiz score will be used in place of the missed test/quiz score. Only ONE test can be missed with a valid excuse. Please note there is no make-up final exam. Failure to take the scheduled final exam automatically results in an F grade for the course.

WITHDRAWAL POLICY Please see Important Dates for the withdrawal deadline for a W grade. Note that if lack of attendance is affecting your grade in this course, then your professor will withdraw you from the course before the withdrawal deadline. After the withdrawal deadline, all students will receive the appropriate grade earned. NOTE: Any student who withdraws or is withdrawn from a class during a third or subsequent attempt in the same course will be assigned a grade of "F". TECHNICAL PROBLEMS Technical problems such as power outages and unavailability of Internet connections can happen. Do not wait until the last minute to complete your assignments or quizzes. Technical problems are not an acceptable excuse for work that has not been completed by the due date. If your computer freezes, restarts, or loses its Internet connection during a quiz, the quiz will be marked as Incomplete.
