Staff and students are back and busy working on coursework. Teachers are creating and re-vamping assignments to engage each student. Students are working diligently and handing coursework in. We know that relationships between staff and students are key to student success. We are building the relationships with your student so that they are comfortable asking us for help and being part of our space. Attendance means that we can build trust between staff and students. We love your student and hope to see them regularly. At St. John Bosco we try to look after each student. Our philosophy is that you can not learn when you are hungry, therefore we try to provide snacks and sometime lunches if need be. Many students from St. John Bosco and St. Joe s come for snacks daily. We would like to thank all the people that look after the snack program at the Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools. St. John Bosco has held seminars for the Religion course. Seminars are a great way for students to connect with others and learn key concepts relevant to their coursework. Staff is in the process of developing mini-lessons and seminars for all courses. Stay tuned for more information! Please encourage your student to come to these. St. John Bosco s motto, A lot of things influence your choices, but nothing determines them except you. We want to continue to keep you up-to-date and informed about the latest school and school board information, events and announcements through electronic communications such as emails and newsletters from St. John Bosco Catholic School. Occasionally these communications may include information about offers, advertisements or promotions related to school activities such as food sales, fundraising, event tickets, year-books, field trip opportunities, student photos, or similar school related activities. If you have any questions or wish to withdraw

G R A N D E P R A I R I E C A T H O L I C S C H O O L D I S T R I C T # 2 8 September 2016 St. John Bosco Orange Shirt Day: The next FNMI related event is the Every Child Matters Orange Shirt Day. The official Orange Shirt Day is September 30th, but since we have a PD day on that date, we will be wearing our shirts on September 29th. For those of you who may not know, Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013. It was born from the sharing of Phyllis (Jack) Webstad s story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come. September 30th has been declared Orange Shirt Day annually, in recognition of the harm the residential school system did to children's sense of self-esteem and wellbeing, and as an affirmation of our commitment to ensure that everyone around us matters. Wearing an orange shirt is a way to honour the survivors and remember those that did not survive.

ST. JOHN BOSCO CATHOLIC SCHOOL Leanne Germann, Principal: Leanne Germann is the Principal at St. John Bosco, and teaches Religion, Phys Ed, Art, Sociology, and Psychology. Leanne loves her kids, the students and staff here at Bosco. We are pleased that more and more students are attending St. John Bosco and are finding success in their coursework! Antoinette Shular, English and Social Studies Teacher: My name is Antoinette Shular. I have lived in Grande Prairie for over 12 years. My husband is a helicopter pilot and this is where he came for work. Grande Prairie has become our home and we could not imagine living anywhere else. I have a family of my own. I have two daughters that are in grades 5 and 7. They inspire me every day. My work and life experience has always been about creating relationships with people. I see teaching the same way, building relationships. I look forward to working with Grande Prairie Catholic Schools, specifically St. John Bosco. I endeavor to teach curriculum and life skills every day. I will be the Social Studies and English teacher. This year will be amazing and I am so glad to be a part of it. Kelsey Conway, Mathematics and Physics: My name is Kelsey Conway and I am teaching Mathematics and Physics at St. John Bosco. I moved here from just outside of Halifax, Nova Scotia and am in Grande Prairie for my third year now. I m looking forward to a great year!
ST. JOHN BOSCO CATHOLIC SCHOOL Tanya Keller, Sciences My name is Tanya Keller and I am the science teacher (minus Physics 20 & 30) for St. John Bosco. I earned my Bachelor of Science with Specialization in Chemistry more years ago than I like to admit publicly which means I spent a number of years working in the field as an analyst, a researcher and later as chemical and pharmaceutical sales representative. About a decade ago, I decided to go back to University to get my Bachelor of Education and I have worked with the Alberta Distance Learning Centre as the lead teacher for Science 10, Chemistry 30 and their two Forensics courses and I have worked as a substitute teacher more days than I like to count. My family and I moved to Grande Prairie about two years ago and I have two amazing little boys, a six year old who has just begun Grade 1 and a four year old in pre-school, who are the reason I get out of bed every morning (don t get all sentimental on me, people.i meant that literally, neither one will let me sleep past 7am! J ). My husband is working out of Valleyview which means that every day we juggle his commute, the boys schedules and my new job but when the opportunity came up for me to work in Outreach using materials that I am already familiar with from working with ADLC, I could not pass it up. The challenges of working as an outreach teacher are many but so are the rewards and I am looking forward to working with each and every one of my current and future students.
