Monthly Electronic Newsletter - Page 3 of 7 NEWS Coral Reef Senior High School graduating seniors, Nuria Dolphin and Samantha Smith, were recognized by The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers as 2017 Scholastic Art & Writing Award National Medalists and Juan Garcia and Anderson Leal each received the Ford Motor scholarship in the amount of $1,000. The Ramos Boys Everglades Challenge at Zoo Miami was attended by over 200 children. The event was a big success netting around $20K with Vineland K-8 Center generating 2/3 of the donations. The funds generated will be used towards the Everglades conservation and restoration project. Congratulations to the 2016/17 Principal of the Year Ms. Maritza D. Jimenez from Hialeah Gardens Middle School and Assistant Principal of the Year Ms. Cisely Scott, from Lenora B. Smith Elementary School. Congratulations as well to the finalists and the runner ups. Monthly Electronic Newsletter - Page 4 of 7 THE LAST TOWN HALL & AWARDS CEREMONY OF THE 2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR WAS HELD @ SOUTH DADE SR ON APRIL 25 TH. The night began in the courtyard of the school with a Resource Fair where District Offices and community organizations had an opportunity to offer their services to all the guests while listening to the sounds of the school s jazz band. We then moved into the auditorium to get a sneak peak at the talent of so many of our students. I was joined on stage by Palmetto Bay Councilwoman, Karyn Cunningham, South Region Superintendent, Ms. Barbara Mendizabal, and South Region Director, Ms. Reeva Vangates, to recognize two students from each of the District 9 Performances by the schools for either their academics or citizenship, as well as, the District 9 Silver Knight nominees, the South Dade Dance Team for their State Championship, the Teacher of the Year and Rookie Teacher of the Year District South Dade Dance Team, finalists representing the south area, the District 9 South 2017 State winners, F.C. Region finalists and the 2016-17 District Employee of the Martin K-8 Jubilee Chorus, Year. Thank you to all the principals, parents, staff and students who were present. A big thank you to South Howard Drive El Category Dade Senior Principal, Mr. De Armas, along with the 5 Dance Group, Laura staff and students who made this night possible. Monthly Electronic Newsletter - Page 5 of 7 STUDENT GOVERNMENT ASSOCIATION MONTHLY MEETING @ MIAMI SUNSET SR DO THE RIGHT THING CEREMONY GOOD MORNING CORAL GABLES CHAMBER BREAKFAST EARTH DAY @ SUNSET SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL RECOGNIZING THE SOUTH DADE WRESTLING TEAM STATE TITLE AT THE APRIL SCHOOL BOARD MEETING. They are the first team in Miami-Dade County Public Schools history to win an unprecedented 4 th consecutive State Championship. The team which is led by Head Coach, Victor Balmaceda, scored 240.5 team points, which was a school best and won the State Championship by a 134-point margin, setting another team and county record. The team is now referred to as The Dynasty. Monthly Electronic Newsletter - Page 7 of 7 DISTRICT 9 STUDENT LEADERSHIP ADVISORY COUNCIL MEETING @ SOUTH DADE SR DISTRICT 9 STUDENT LEADERS Student Leaders from all of the District 9 high schools were welcomed by a performance from the South Dade Dance Team who recently won first place in the state for their contemporary routine at the American Dance Alliance State Competition. Guest speaker Ms. Nikita Antoine, Community Liaison & Youth Development Marketing, Dade County Federal Credit Union, spoke with the group regarding financial literacy. Some of the topics Ms. Antoine touched upon were the benefits of banking with a federal credit union vs a traditional bank, credit card interest rates and how not to get into credit card debt, as well as, advice on saving, building up your credit rating and much more. Mr. Steve Greer, South Dade Agriscience instructor, also spoke to the group and shared information about the Academy at South Dade Sr and the overall future of Horticulture and Agriscience in South Florida. 35 TH NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MAGNET SCHOOLS IN LOS ANGELES, CA M-DCPS WAS NAMED BEST DISTRICT IN THE NATION FOR SUSTAINABILITY OF MAGNET PROGRAMS
