Demonstrate understanding of text selections, vocabulary, and skills. Practice on-demand writing by responding to a short answer prompt. Teach Test-Taking Strategies: Making an Educated Guess Teach/Model Explain that good test-takers don t always know the right answer. They sometimes need to make educated guesses. When you take a multiple-choice test, there s a difference between random guessing and making an educated guess. Discuss the first thing that students should do when they get to a set of multiple-choice answers. Read all of the answer choices. Even if you think the first one is right, read the rest of them, too. Explain how to eliminate answers. Cross out answers that you know are wrong. Getting rid of wrong answers improves your chances of picking the right one. Present strategies for choosing the remaining answers. Read the answers that remain. Then reread or skim the text to help you choose your answer. Practice/Apply Ask students to explain how they can make an educated guess to answer Question 1. (Read all of the answers. Cross out the ones you know are wrong, such as that a risk of social networking is meeting employers. Then skim or reread to pick the best choice from the ones that are left.)* Assess Reading Skills Comprehension and Vocabulary Give students approximately 10 minutes to complete these sections independently. * For additional instruction and practice, see Test-Taking Strategies: Making an Educated Guess, p. 18. Call on students to share the supporting details they gave for how surveillance technology will affect our society. Score Student Work To grade student assessments, score each part as follows: Comprehension: 10 points each (total 50 points) 1.B 2.D 3.C 4.B 5.D Vocabulary: 5 points each (total 25 points) 1.A 2.C 3.D 4.A 5.B Short Answer: 25 points Sample response: Surveillance technology will continue to affect our society as it becomes more widespread. People will feel safer in public. More businesses will find ways to reach more people and sell their products. Technology will help to locate missing persons and will cut down on the hours needed to search locations. If people know their actions are being recorded, most people will change their behavior. Our society would have fewer secrets, but it would also have less privacy. Page 2 of 2
