JOB DESCRIPTION Post Title: Deputy Head Teacher (Leadership Pay Spine 22-26) SPECIFIC ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Within the context of this job description, Deputy Head Teachers will have particular responsibilities as identified on the Leadership Team grid. STRATEGIC DIRECTION AND DEVELOPMENT OF FOXFORD SCHOOL The Deputy Head Teacher, working with the Head Teacher and Governing Body, will help to develop a strategic view for Foxford School and plan for its future needs and further development within the local, national and international context. The Deputy Head Teacher will, as far as is reasonable: Lead by example, provide inspiration and motivation, and embody for the students, staff, governors and parents, the vision, the purpose and the leadership of Foxford School Help to create an ethos and provide educational vision and direction which secure effective teaching, successful learning and achievement by students and sustained improvement in their spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development and prepare them for opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life Help to secure the commitment of parents and the wider community to the vision and direction Help the Head Teacher to create and implement a strategic plan Help to ensure that all those involved in Foxford School are committed to its aims, motivated to achieve them and involved in meeting the long, medium and short term objectives and targets which ensure educational success Help to ensure that the management, finance, organisation and administration of Foxford School supports its vision and aims Help to ensure that policies and practices take account of national, local and school data and inspection and research findings
Monitor, evaluate and review the effects of Foxford School s policies, priorities and targets, advise the Head Teacher and taken action if necessary. TEACHING AND LEARNING The Deputy Head Teacher, working with the Head Teacher and Governing Body, will secure and sustain effective learning and teaching throughout Foxford School, monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and standards of students achievement, and use benchmarks to set targets for improvement. The Deputy Head Teacher will, as far as is reasonable: Lead by example in their own classroom teaching and, therefore, being an excellent role model to others Help to create and maintain an environment which secures good teaching, effective learning, high standards of achievement, good behaviour and discipline, and which enable teachers to meet targets set. Help to determine, organise, implement, monitor and evaluate the curriculum and its assessment in order to identify and act on areas for improvement Ensure that improvements in literacy, numeracy and ICT are priority targets for all students, including those with special educational needs Help to ensure that effective, appropriate tutorial support is available to students and that students develop study skills in order to learn more effectively and with increasing independence Monitor and evaluate the quality of teaching and standards of learning and achievement of all students, including those with special educational or linguistic needs, in order to set and meet challenging, realistic targets for improvement. Create and promote positive strategies for developing good community cohesion. Develop effective links with the community, including business and industry, to extend the curriculum and enhance learning and teaching. Maintain an effective partnership with parents to support and improve students achievement and personal development LEADING AND MANAGING STAFF The Deputy Head Teacher will lead, motivate, support, challenge and develop staff to secure improvement. The Deputy Head Teacher will, as far as is reasonable: Maximise the contribution of staff to improving the quality of education provided and standards achieved and ensure that constructive working relationships are formed between staff and students
Plan, allocate, support and evaluate work undertaken by groups, teams and individuals, ensuring clear delegation of tasks and devolution of responsibilities Help to implement and sustain effective systems for the management of staff performance, incorporating performance review and targets for teachers, including targets relating to students achievement Understand the expectations of all Foxford School staff, teaching and nonteaching, to help to enable them to carry out their roles to the highest standard and contribute to the induction, training and professional development of staff Sustain their own motivation and that of other staff EFFICIENT AND EFFECTIVE DEPLOYMENT OF STAFF AND RESOURCES The Deputy Head Teacher will help to deploy people and resources efficiently and effectively to meet specific objectives in line with Foxford School s strategic plan and financial context The Deputy Head Teacher will, as far as is reasonable: Work with senior colleagues and governors to recruit, deploy and develop all staff effectively in order to improve the quality of education provided Help to set appropriate priorities for expenditure, allocate funds and ensure effective administration and control Help to manage and organise accommodation efficiently and effectively to ensure that it meets the needs of the curriculum and health and safety regulations Help to manage, monitor and review the range, quality, quantity and use of all available resources in order to improve the quality of education, improve students achievements, ensure efficiency and secure best value. ACCOUNTABILITY The Deputy Head Teacher will share corporate accountability within the Leadership Team for the effectiveness and efficiency of Foxford School to the Head Teacher, governors and others, including students, parents, staff, local employers and the local community The Deputy Head Teacher will, as far as is reasonable: Provide information, objective advice and support to the Head Teacher to enable them to meet their responsibilities for securing effective learning and teaching and improved standards of achievement and for achieving efficiency and best value Help to create and develop an organisation in which all staff recognise that they are accountable for the success of Foxford School
Present a coherent and accurate account of Foxford School s performance in a form appropriate to a range of audiences, including the Head Teacher, governors, students, parents, the LA, the local community, OFSTED, HMI and others, to enable them to play their part effectively Help to ensure that parents and students are well informed about the curriculum, attainment and progress and are able to understand realistic and challenging targets for improvement and to make a fully informed contribution to achieving them.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT OF DEPUTY HEAD TEACHERS (as laid out in the School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document) Professional Duties Professional Duties A person appointed as a deputy or assistant head teacher in a school, in addition to carrying out the professional duties of a teacher other than a head teacher including those duties particularly assigned by the head teacher, must- play a major role under the overall direction of the head teacher in- (a) formulating the aims and objectives of the school; (b) establishing the policies through which they are to be achieved; (c) managing staff and resources to that end; and (d) monitoring progress towards their achievement. Undertake any professional duties of the head teacher reasonably delegated by the head teacher. If the head teacher is absent from the school a deputy head teacher must undertake their professional duties to the extent required by the head teacher or the relevant body or, in the case of a foundation, voluntary aided or foundation special school, the governing body. No teacher may be required to work on any Saturday, Sunday or public holiday unless their contract of employment expressly provides for this. Be entitled to a break of reasonable length as near to the middle of each school day as is reasonably practicable. Guaranteed planning and preparation time All teachers who participate in the teaching of pupils are entitled to reasonable periods of Planning, Preparation and Assessment (PPA) time as part of the 1265 or pro rata equivalent (as the case may be) to enable the discharge of the professional responsibilities of teaching and assessment. PPA time must be provided in units of not less than half an hour during the school s timetabled teaching week and must amount to not less than 10% of the teacher s timetabled teaching time. A teacher must not be required to carry out any other duties during the teacher s PPA time.
