Newsletter Date Papanews Community Edition Friday 6th April 2018 Principal s Perspective The Easter break has hopefully provided an opportunity for a quick recharge for students and staff, which was supported by some very pleasant weather. Having just completed the penultimate week of the term, and moving in to the final week, brings with it for many students, the culmination of the term s work. This will include, for senior students in particular, the completion of a number of internal assessments. It is important that this completion of work is prioritised throughout the week so students can maximise the opportunity to pass and gain credits for NCEA. Thank you to the students and staff who donated blood to the New Zealand Blood Bank this week. NZ Blood are very appreciative of the opportunity to be able to come in to the school, and are very grateful. We all know how important having access to blood is, and that this can only be accessed through New Zealand society being prepared to donate this valuable resource. The Blood Bank staff were most complimentary about our students politeness, mature outlook, and ability to be on time for appointments, which made the day flow extremely well. It is important to acknowledge their comments and gratitude to the school for supporting this vital cause. It has been a particularly long term, and as such, it is important with one week to go, that we all maintain our focus and finish the term off on a positive note. Courtyard Concert The first Courtyard Concert went off with a bang, kicking off the 2018 performance season for the Music Department. The concerts have been developed in response to the need to find in house opportunities for our students to perform, and for our sound engineering pupils to hone their skills. Students get to fine tune their work in front of a live but local audience. This is particularly useful when preparing for competitions and tours, as well as giving families a chance to see and hear the results of all those rehearsals and camps. The weather is always a worry when planning these events, but we were so lucky that for this year s first event it behaved beautifully. The courtyard was packed and the audience was treated to a variety of musical offerings with our Concert Band opening proceedings with pizzazz. We were then treated to a broad selection of works including solo vocal performances, a sampling from our Year 13 rock band Three Chairs Missing, the Silvertones Flute Ensemble, the Jazz Combo, and the Jazz Band. All groups played with aplomb and the range and variety of groups reflects the vibrant Music Department of Papanui High School. A big thank-you to the students and staff who make these concerts possible, and such a treat for those attending. Sarah Anderson Arts Coordinator Term 2 Night Classes Our Term 2 Night Classes are now open for enrolment.
