Dear Parent/Guardian: Zoo Knoxville educators hope to make the homeschool class experience one that your child will enjoy and remember for a lifetime. Our goal is to create an environment that is both enjoyable and supportive, allowing students to feel good about themselves as they participate in many new experiences. Our educators are able to accomplish this goal by providing a class environment that promotes physical safety, emotional wellbeing, educational opportunities and fun. We also feel everyone shares in the responsibility of making class a great experience; every student plays a critical role by agreeing to respect the rights of others. Throughout the semester, students will be exposed to new opportunities that challenge them and help them grow. These experiences can be a big adjustment, so positive encouragement from all the students as well as from you, as the parent/guardian, can be essential to your child s success. Sometimes, despite everyone s best efforts, children will misbehave during these experiences. Our educators can easily handle most of these situations, but there may be times when we need to include the parent/guardian for disciplinary purposes. In hopes of eliminating these situations from occurring and ensuring that everyone truly understands what is considered appropriate behavior during class, Zoo Knoxville has instituted the following behavior contract (see the following page). Please read and sign the contract, indicating that both you and the student understand what type of behavior is expected during class and what the consequences will be if a student chooses to partake in inappropriate behavior. The bottom portion of the contract must be signed and returned with the Medical Release and Email forms. If you have any questions, please e-mail zkfamily@zooknoxville.org or call 865-637-5331 x1363. We certainly appreciate your trust and support. Together we can make our homeschool class a wonderful experience for your child. Sincerely, Amanda Haire Family Partnership Coordinator

HOMESCHOOL BEHAVIOR CONTRACT Expectations 1. Follow the instructor s directions. 2. Individuals in the class are expected to keep their hands, feet, and other objects to themselves. 3. Be respectful to the animals. You are a visitor here, and this is their home. 4. Be respectful to other people. Pay attention, and listen when someone else (the teacher or another student) is speaking. 5. Raise your hand if you have a question or if you would like to speak. Individuals who shout out will not be called upon. 6. Always stay with the group. 7. Always talk to the instructor if you have a question or a problem during homeschool. We won t be able to help you if you don t speak up. Failure to follow these expectations will result in an unsafe or unenjoyable atmosphere for you and others during the Homeschool classes. Should that happen, the following consequences will occur: Consequences for Disruptive Behavior Depending on the severity of the situation or if the behavior persists, the following consequences will be taken. 1. First Time: Instructor will discuss the behavior with the student and give a warning. 2. Second Time: Instructor will place the student in time-out and will discuss the behavior with the parent/guardian. 3. Third Time: Instructor will place the student in time-out and will discuss the behavior with the parent/guardian. The student will be assessed a one class suspension. 4. If a student is suspended twice, that student will not be allowed to return to the homeschool class. Consequences for Hitting/Bullying If a student intentionally shoves, strikes, kicks, or inappropriately makes contact with another individual, the following consequences will be taken. 1. First Instance: Instructor will place the student in time-out and discuss the behavior with the student and parent/guardian. 2. Second Instance: Instructor will place the student in time-out. The instructor will discuss the behavior with the student and parent/guardian. The student will be assessed a one class suspension. 3. Third Instance: Instructor will place the student in time-out. The instructor will discuss the behavior with the students and parent/guardian. The student will not be allowed to return to the homeschool class. Note: Severe violations of the policy may result in the student being asked to leave the program, regardless of the number of prior instances. Any parent/guardian attending with a student is also expected to adhere to the student expectations presented above. There are no refunds when an individual s own behavior requires that they be sent home. I have read and understand the Homeschool Behavior Contract and I have discussed it with my child in a manner that he/she can understand. Parent/Guardian signature Child s Signature Date Signed
