Tertiary Enabling Program Subjects What will I learn? The four subjects in the program have been developed to provide students with the skills and knowledge required for successful university study in a range of courses. The learning concepts and assessments are integrated so that learning in one subject is supported and reinforced by learning in the other subjects. The four subjects are: 1. Academic Communication 2. Critical Thinking 3. Maths Foundations 4. Science Foundations What is involved? Each subject is delivered through a two hour teaching session per week. There are also two compulsory tutorials each week. The full time face to face commitment is ten hours. TEP is designed to demonstrate the reality of university study so that students are prepared for what lies ahead. Therefore, in addition to attendance at lectures and tutorials, students are expected to read and prepare for classes, communicate ideas through different oral and written tasks and work independently and in groups or pairs to achieve subject learning outcomes. There are regular assignments, two exams for each subject and an essay. Students are fully supported to develop the necessary skills to undertake these requirements. As a rough guide, students should expect to spend about four hours a week for each enrolled subject on independent reading, class preparation, assignment tasks and study. TEP Subjects: 1. Academic Communication Students are introduced to the strategic differences between academic communication and other forms of communication. Students examine the purpose of academic communication, the conventions of academic culture and the requirements of an academic audience. Students are introduced to the structure and purpose of different academic writing genres and develop awareness of the conventions fundamental to academic communication within and across disciplines. They also consider the ways that accepted academic forms work to influence and construct received knowledge. Students deconstruct and critically analyse a range of views on academic culture before writing their own versions of different academic communication modes. As well as developing the academic skills of note-taking, effective written communication, online research and oral presentation students gain an understanding of the difference between academic and popular discourse and the ways that information is constructed to meet the needs of a given audience.
Tertiary Enabling Program Subjects 2014 2. Critical Thinking Students are introduced to the principles of critical thinking through a diverse range of issues and arguments drawn from the humanities and social sciences. The subject is organised into four modules, each theoretically framed by a different disciplinary area, providing opportunities to develop, transfer and apply the metacognitive skills of critical analysis and creative problem solving. Students are encouraged to engage with a range of differing viewpoints, to question received knowledge and to recognise higher order thinking. Through a range of assessment tasks that emphasise analysis and argument, students develop capacity for reasoning, argument construction, oral presentation and academic writing. 3. Science Foundations Science Foundations aims to develop the knowledge and skills required for future study in general university programs including Nursing and Allied Health, Education and undergraduate Science degrees. It introduces students to the Scientific Method as a process for experimentation and research. The subject is organised into four modules: Chemistry, Biology, Practical Science and Human Systems. Each module draws upon and reinforces conceptual understandings from the earlier modules. Learning occurs through laboratory experimentation as well as classroom activities. Assessments are based on cumulative development of knowledge and include online quizzes, a written report, an oral presentation and two examinations. 4. Maths Foundations Maths Foundations introduces students to a spectrum of mathematics skills required for future learning in general university programs. Students will develop conceptual knowledge and procedural skills in a range of topics including arithmetical rules and operations, calculus, measurement and data, algebra, probability, graphs and statistical analysis. Students will be expected to solve a variety of mathematical problems using appropriate strategies, methods and techniques and to apply mathematical concepts and knowledge to different real world situations. Assessment tasks are based on cumulative development of skills and knowledge and include project tasks as well as quizzes and two examinations. Feedback is provided to students at frequent and regular intervals throughout the semester.
