Profile Planning Guide Webinar August 2015
Getting Started This Guide and associated products were funded, in part, through College Career Initiatives Grant funds from Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) in collaboration with Austin Community College (ACC) and Education Service Center Region 13.
Getting Started No aspect of this document has been reviewed by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and should not be considered to be the work products of this agency or the State of Texas. The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board is not the author or endorser of this product.
Getting Started A statewide task-force of 19 members was established to create a tool to bridge gaps for college and career readiness efforts in Texas schools. The outcome is the Texas College and Career Readiness Profile Planning Guide.
What Does The Profile Planning Guide Do? Assists with implementation of House Bill 5 Creates a Campus Improvement Plan Brings focus and builds upon current college and career readiness efforts Engages all staff for all students Provides the tools and resources to develop a college and career readiness culture
Goals To deepen the understanding of college and career readiness To operationalize college and career readiness culture in Texas schools
What is the Profile Planning Guide? 7
The Profile Planning Guide is: A process described in a series of steps A tool to guide decision making A mechanism for capturing and analyzing data
The Profile Planning Guide is also: Designed to coordinate locally-driven priorities Designed to empower campuses and districts Available for download Grounded in research
Research and Development Based on the Texas College and Career Readiness Standards Based on the research of the Educational Policy Improvement Center Developed by vertical teams Funded, in part, by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board
How is the Guide Structured? The Profile Planning Guide outlines six steps:
Build a CCR Foundation Step 1
What is College Readiness? College and career readiness can be defined as the level of preparation necessary for students to enroll and succeed without remediation in entry-level, credit bearing general education courses. Conley, D. T. (2007). Redefining College Readiness, volume 3. Eugene, OR: Educational Policy Improvement Center.
What is Career Readiness? Career readiness involves three major skill areas: core academic skills and the ability to apply those skills to concrete situations in order to function in the workplace and in routine daily activities; employability skills (such as critical thinking and responsibility) that are essential in any career area; and technical, job-specific skills related to a specific career pathway. These skills have been emphasized across numerous pieces of research and allow students to enter true career pathways that offer family-sustaining wages and opportunities for advancement. Association for Career and Technical Education
Texas College and Career Readiness Standards Distinguished from high school graduation standards by emphasizing content as a means to stimulate critical thinking
Cross-Disciplinary Standards Texas CCRS Cross-Disciplinary Standards are divided into two key content areas: Key Cognitive Skills Foundational Skills The Key Cognitive Skills include: Intellectual Curiosity Reasoning Problems Solving Academic Behaviors Work Habits Academic Integrity 16
How do you THINK Key Cognitive Strategies Problem formulation, research, interpretation, communication, precision and accuracy What do you KNOW How do you ACT How do you GO Key Content Knowledge Key terms & terminology, factual information, linking ideas, organizing concepts, academic and technical skills Key Learning Skills & Techniques Time management, study skills, goal setting, self-awareness, persistence, collaborative learning, student ownership of learning, technological proficiency, retention of factual information Key Transition Knowledge & Skills Postsecondary program selection, admissions requirements, financial aid, career pathways, postsecondary culture, role & identity issues, agency
Seven Principles of College and Career Readiness Based on the work of Dr. David Conley
Seven Principles of College and Career Readiness This was based on observations made in 38 schools that graduated a greater-thanexpected proportion of their students who were college career ready.
Best Practice for CCR Principle 1: Create and maintain a college-going culture in the school Principle 2: Create a core academic program aligned with college and career readiness Principle 3: Teach key self-management skills and expect students to use them Principle 4: Prepare students for the complexity of applying to college Principle 5: Align assignments and grading policies with college expectations Principle 6: Make the senior year meaningful and challenging Principle 7: Build partnerships with and connections to postsecondary education
