Cooper Academy for Mathematics and Science Application for Admission For 2017
The purpose of the Cooper Academy of Mathematics and Science (CAMS) is to offer our students who have exceeded college readiness standards in mathematics, science, and reading a high school curriculum rich with AP and dual credit mathematics and science courses that will both challenge and prepare them for a post-secondary mathematics or science education. For a student to be considered for special recognition at graduation for participating in the CAMS program they must meet the following requirements: Successfully meet all graduation requirements set upon students by Cooper High School Complete the following courses: o Algebra 2 Honors o Chemistry Honors o Geometry Honors o AP Chemistry o Advanced Pre-Calculus o AP Biology o AP Calculus BC o Appropriate Physics Course o Capstone Mathematics Courses o Capstone Course in Area of Interest Hold an unweighted cumulative average of at least 92 (B+ average) in the above listed classes. Below is a basic framework for a CAMS student s four year graduation plan for the Traditional College Prep Area of Interest. Please note that this is just a basic framework for this particular area of interest. Students who wish to take four years of band, choir, or a foreign language can do so, but in most cases at least one summer course must be taken. Because of this it is of upmost importance for all CAMS students to create their own personal four year plan upon entering the academy to make sure all graduation requirements are met. These include the following: 1. 1 CTE Credit - May be taken during summer 2..5 PE Credit - May be taken during summer 3..5 Health Credit - May be taken online 4. 1 Fine Arts Credit - May be taken online/fourth year Foreign Language Course Note: some of the higher level classes are dual enrollment, and thus require a college tuition payment.
FAQs Who should apply? Motivated, high-performing students that are interested in engineering or other science, technology, or math (STEM) careers. What are the different programs that are offered in the CAMS program? The CAMS program at Cooper offers programs in Traditional College Prep, Computer Science, and Advanced Manufacturing (Project Lead the Way). More information about these programs, including basic schedule outlines, can be found at our website: www.coopercams.yolasite.com. What should I expect in the program? You will be exposed to high level math and science courses. These courses are challenging and fast-paced. As the program progresses, you will be exposed to colleges and professionals in STEM careers. How will the participants be chosen? Students will be chosen based on a combination of their application form and teacher recommendations. Please note that this is a very rigorous program and not all students will be accepted. How do I get more information? Contact Dawn Hinton dawn.hinton@boone.kyschools.us or by phone at 384-5040. How will I know if I get in? Parents or caregivers will be notified by email. If I don t apply now, can I get in later? No. The individual courses will be available to all students, however the complete CAMS experience and coursework are only available to those admitted. If I don t want to be in the program later, what would happen? If the program doesn t make sense for you at a later date, you can opt out of the program. What if my test scores are not up to the recommended levels? The coursework is very rigorous and therefore test scores are important. However, if your scores are deficient in one area, but very strong in the other two, then this program may still work for you. Your application will be viewed holistically and you should still apply if you have a strong desire and work ethic. How many students will be in the program? This depends on the number of qualified applicants.
Student Instructions 1. Read through all materials and discuss this program with your parents or caregivers. 2. Complete the application form. 3. Give a teacher recommendation form to each of your science, math, and language arts teachers. Be sure to write your name and your current school on the form before you give it to your teachers. You will not get these back. Your teachers will send these directly to Cooper High School. 4. Submit your completed application form to Dawn Hinton at Cooper High School by January 13, 2016.
