Online Learning Environments OLE Instruction delivered via the Internet includes real-time (synchronous) and anytime, anywhere (asynchronous) interactions Students become more active, reflective learners. Students and teachers engage in learning by using technology and become more familiar with technology by using it University of Massachusetts (2005) 2

Goals for Today Teachers will learn about Online Learning Environments (OLE) and the skills needed to manage learning. Teachers will discover how to address gifted student needs to create higher-level products and to share ideas in a safe and secure setting. 3

Why use an online Learning Environment? Educators can share and discuss resources Provides a platform for developing a sense of community among students Students can safely learn how to behave in a social network with peers and adults Participation can different learning styles. Engages students in the curriculum. Fosters the use of 21st Century skills like communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and creativity. 5

20 Ways to Use Edmodo

1. Student writing projects Give your students an enriching writing experience through Edmodo. Help students tap into individualism, build self-esteem and measure how far they ve come during the school year with writing projects: Class Blog Flat Stanley project This I Believe project Edmodo provides students a platform for sharing their writing with teachers, peers and family.

2. Role Playing* Help students understand key events by reenacting them through role playing activities. Create student profiles for relevant figures and integrate knowledge in action. Inject life into old curriculum and helps students develop the skills of initiative, communication, problem-solving, self-awareness, and working cooperatively in teams.

3. Backchannel Discussions Encourage real-time discussions through Edmodo. Read alouds In-class movies Professional development events Extend learning beyond the classroom walls. (Backchannel during current events- e.g. State of the Union, Elections, breaking news stories, etc.) Mobile website and iphone/android apps provide easy access to Edmodo anytime, anywhere.

4. Language Practice Spice up your foreign language class by having students write and respond to questions in Edmodo. Encourages students to practice their language skills through real life conversations. Create a co-classroom with other students from across the globe to help students learn from each other.

5. Grammar and Punctuation Help your students improve their grammar and punctuation by enforcing proper usage on Edmodo. Require students to post in complete words and sentence (i.e. you not u, I not i ). Teach students proper use of social media tools to help prepare them for our connected world.

6. Communicate with Parents* Keep parents up-to-date on classroom activities during the semester through parent accounts on Edmodo. Send a message to students and parents in your class each week to keep them updated on all of the events and achievements of your class. Provides a way for parents to reach out to you for one-on-one discussions.

7. Book Clubs* Encourage students to read and help make their reading experience more engaging with an Edmodo book club. Host after school book clubs or summer book clubs. Facilitate discussions with writing prompts. Connect with other classrooms around the globe for book discussions.

8. Mobile Learning Give your students an interactive educational experience through mobile devices. Bring Edmodo on your next field trip Post photos and create scavenger hunt questions, polls or quiz questions along the way. Great for backchannel discussions 19

9. Sick days & extended leave Edmodo is great for communicating when you or one of your students are absent from school. Provide notes, assignments or other updates to students who are absent. Communicate updates or check in with your your class if you are absent from school.

10. Teacher Lounge Create a teacher lounge where teachers within your school can discuss ideas and share content. Creates a casual environment where online discussions can take place. Share ideas, files and links between a voluntary group of teachers. Teachers can contribute on their own time.

11. Planning Committees Whether you re planning your school play, the annual fundraiser or next year s curriculum, Edmodo makes it easier through online collaboration. Invite teachers, students, parents, or administrators to join. Share ideas and content with all group members. Allows for ongoing dialogue at the convenience of your group members.

12. Tutor Connection Create a group on Edmodo to connect with any tutors working with your students. Allows you to communicate upcoming assignments, quizzes or tests Enables you and the tutor to share ideas, content and advice to that will further advance the learning potential of the student Include parents in on the discussions

13. Project Based Learning* Take a project-based approached to learning by creating Edmodo sub groups. Students can collaborate and work towards specific goals together in small groups. The Edmodo platform allows for anytime, anywhere communication between students. All group information can be shared and stored in Edmodo for easy access by all group members.

14. Reading Critique Take reading to the next level by having students critique each other. Students can upload and listen to audio files directly on Edmodo. Promotes encouragement between students in the classroom. Helps improve listening skills Not limited to reading, can also do art critiques, writing critiques, etc.

15. Co-teaching* Connect your classroom with other classrooms within your school or around the globe. Co-teachers can help grade assignments, monitor discussions, and post files or comments to the group. Join an Edmodo subject area community to connect with other teachers around the globe.

16. Sub Hub Provide your sub an easy way to help manage students and stay connected with you. Create a student account for your sub so they can participate in your Edmodo class, without gaining access to your account. Allows you to communicate with your sub and students, plus view all classroom activity, even while you re away.

17. Science Probes* Engage your students through science probes on Edmodo. Post videos and other interactive to supplement Those students who are too shy to raise their hand in class, usually feel more comfortable communicating online.

18. RSS Feed Keep up with all your favorite blogs through Edmodo! Create an Edmodo group, retrieve the RSS links for the blogs you like to read and add them to the group. Stay organized and up-to-date with content being shared by bloggers in your PLN.

19. School Clubs Edmodo is a great collaboration tool for district wide clubs like Robotics, Forensics, sports teams, etc. Use the calendar feature to mark important dates/matches/meets/practices. Notifications will help you update the group on important messages. Post results, pictures, etc. for the group to view.

20. Alumni Groups After the school year ends, keep in touch with students and help them stay connected with each other. Create one alumni group for all your classes to join Distribute group code at the end of the year
