Online classes require that you... Possess strong time management skills. You will need to organize your schedule to meet assignment deadlines. Communicate frequently with your instructor and fellow classmates. This means you must know how to access your student email. Plan on putting aside the same amount of time for your online course as you would for a face-to-face course. In fact, online courses can be even more demanding of your time, so be prepared. Log onto Canvas, your course management site, at least weekly to read new announcements, complete discussion boards, track assignments, etc. Online classes do have an attendance requirement that is demonstrated through your participation on the site as well as through submission of assignments. Have access to a reliable, up to date computer with a high speed internet connection and word processing software. Be proactive and seek help when needed. finding inspiration in teaching Dr. Emily M. Hinnov Professor of English/English Major Coordinator Great Bay Community College Dr. Emily M. Hinnov originally saw herself on stage, not in the classroom. She was involved with theater throughout high school and college, but one semester in an intensive conservatory program taught her that acting just wasn t for me. She refocused her studies on English and theater, with a minor in women s studies. Today, she teaches English at Great Bay Community College. Her career has included teaching appointments at Bowling Green State University in Ohio, Boston University, and Southern New Hampshire University. As the former Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Curriculum at Granite State College, I missed teaching, and when this position at Great Bay came up, it was an opportunity to go back to it full-time, she said. Hinnov, who earned her Master s in English at Simmons College in Boston and her Ph.D. in English at the University of New Hampshire, began teaching at Great Bay in 2014. Her specialty is literary modernism, as well as women s literature and British literature from Beowulf to Virginia Woolf. She also teaches English 110: College Composition, both online and at the Portsmouth campus, and English 099: Developing College Writing. Next fall, she will add Introduction to Film Studies to her teaching repertoire. Her years in Ohio were influential in shaping her educational philosophy. She taught at an open-access satellite campus of Bowling Green. It was her first experience teaching non-traditional students and she has worked with similar students ever since. At Great Bay, Dr. Hinnov teaches students from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. I am amazed with what some of them have gone through to get here. I have so much respect for students especially those who are back in school after a working in a career, or raising a family, or both. They are truly invested in the course material, their learning, and their education. She finds inspiration in teaching students about how the study of literature and writing can connect to their everyday lives.
