Message From the Program Director Michael Swartzon, M.D., FAAFP The West Kendall Baptist Hospital Family Medicine Sports Medicine Fellowship, in partnership with Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute, builds on the programs of excellence at Baptist Health South Florida and Florida International University. Associate Medical Director, Primary Care Orthopedics, Miami Orthopedics & Sports Medicine Institute Clinical Assistant Professor, Florida International University Team Physician, Miami Dolphins, Florida International University, St. Thomas University With one fellow selected per year, the fellowship program offers an individualized approach. Fellows will receive extensive on-site experience in primary care and orthopedic sports medicine. As part of their daily practice, they will work under the supervision of team physicians and specialists. During these times the fellow will have direct contact with the athletes, coaches, certified athletic trainers, EMS and equipment personnel to develop leadership and team-building skills through collaboration and community engagement. The faculty from the Institute is uniquely positioned to provide an exceptional hands-on experience for the fellow to engage with athletes from local high schools and the most prestigious professional sports teams in South Florida. We provide a high-tech and personalized, patient- and family-centered environment coupled with unsurpassed excellence in quality-of-care measures. The goal of our program is to teach fellows the breadth of sports medicine and orthopedics (including adult reconstruction and trauma) so they can be prepared to care for the primary care and musculoskeletal needs of the community they will serve. Curriculum Rotations span six months to all year. The longitudinal curriculum allows for maximum exposure to athletic events without compromising the clinical experience. Our faculty works as a team, and the fellow is integrated into that team from day one. For example, on Monday mornings the fellow will review imaging from the weekend s injuries with the musculoskeletal radiologists. These are injuries the fellow might have seen during sideline coverage and see later in clinic providing for great continuity of care and learning. Whether it s sideline coverage, ultrasound diagnostics, community outreach or direct patient care, we have many learning opportunities to suit individual goals. While the program is designed to meet ACGME requirements, the flexibility in the schedule allows for the fellowship to be built around individual interests. First half of the year: A.M. P.M.
