January 2014 Charter Schools Stimulus Fund Grant Project Summaries Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings Charter School $199,000.00 District: NYC Community School District ( CSD ) 16 Average Score: 90.500 The school requests a grant to cover cost associated to the upgrade of a science lab, an urban garden, a room to be used for an auditorium for performance arts, and multipurpose recreational space. The project will increase student opportunities for handson-scientific inquiry, nutritional education, artistic expression and recreational time. The school received bonus points for the construction of performance arts space. Brilla College Preparatory Charter School $200,000.00 District: NYC CSD 7 Average Score: 88.500 The school requests a grant to support programmatic accessibility on the first floor to install a lift and renovate at least one bathroom in the leased space which dates back to 1913. The school received bonus points for the development of a creative, historical and analytical arts program. Buffalo United Charter School $61,658.00 Average Score: 83.000 The school requests a grant to enhance the overall learning environment at the school through repair and repainting both the front and rear exterior wall surfaces, which are not properly sealed against moisture intrusion; conducting a mold remediation due to moisture; enhancing the gymnasium by repairing the audio system; purchasing a video system; and installing a security service window to allow office staff to screen visitors before entry into the school. Bushwick Ascend Charter School $200,000.00 District: NYC CSD 32 Average Score: 92.000 The school requests a grant to support the installation of a water retention tank in the cellar and other plumbing modifications related to the drainage of storm water. The building has proven vulnerable to flooding from relatively moderate rainstorms, and the school has suffered substantial damage and disruption on several occasions since

opening in 2010; the planned renovations will resolve these issues and ensure appropriate protection from the elements. Canarsie Ascend Charter School $200,000.00 District: NYC CSD 18 Average Score: 107.000 The school requests a grant to support the second phase renovation of the lower school s permanent facility, a former parochial school. The grant would fund asbestos abatement in the school s multipurpose room and replacement of the asbestos tile with new vinyl composite tile, the refurbishment of six classrooms to accommodate the school s growth, the construction of two new faculty bathrooms, and the purchase and installation of a climate-control system to protect the computer servers. The school received bonus points for the construction space to support the performing and visual arts curriculum. Children s Aid College Prep Charter School $125,000.00 District: NYC CSD 12 Average Score: 80.333 The school requests a grant to supplement design cost for the construction of its new school opening September 2016. The school was created in response to the stark needs of children in the South Bronx community of Morrisania, where children and families are confronted with profound barriers to well-being including high rates of poverty and crime and low levels of education achievement and employment. The school received bonus points for the construction of space to showcase the artistic accomplishments of students. Democracy Prep Harlem Charter School $200,000.00 District: NYC CSD 5 Average Score: 97.500 The school requests a grant to renovate its multi-use gym, auditorium and meeting space to provide a heightened experience for education in the performing arts on its middle school campus. This project would allow its middle school scholars to experience performing and performances in a high quality venue that is commensurate with the high level of its academic music program while maintaining and strengthening the existing physical education program. Discovery Charter School $146,773.00 District: Greece Central School District Average Score: 96.000 The school requests a grant to make leasehold improvements to the building to meet the programmatic needs, to conform to building codes, and to comply with ADA. Discovery is upgrading building security and building systems, providing greater access, planning for its grade evolution, and enhancing its performing arts program. The school received bonus points for the project which includes a new sound system for the auditorium. DREAM Charter School $200,000.00 District: NYC CSD 4 Average Score: 77.000 The school requests a grant to support the construction of larger-than-average classrooms for co-teaching teams; dedicated classrooms for science, arts and music; resource rooms; extra gym and fitness space; private rooms for social work counseling; a media center; and dedicated space for family engagement activities. Elmwood Village Charter School $200,000.00 Average Score: 92.500 The school requests a grant to add air conditioning to the entire building to help improve learning conditions and accommodate summer programming including a summer arts program. The implementation will be done during phase two of the facility expansion being undertaken to accommodate a long term expansion from 325 students to 450 students by the 2018-2019 school year. The school received bonus points for the development of a summer arts program. Equality Charter School $200,000.00 District: NYC CSD 11 Average Score: 78.500 The school requests a grant to subsidize the cost of updating and renovating its longterm leased high school building. This building will serve as private space for Equality s new high school opening in fall 2014. Page 3 of 5

Family Life Academy Charter School II $192,540.00 District: NYC CSD 7 Average Score: 94.500 The school requests a grant to subsidize a leasehold rehabilitation and renovation to complete the build-out of the third floor for the school s new private facility. The grant funding would enable the school to move into an affordable, custom-designed, longterm space to meet the needs of all its students including a high percentage of English language learners and special education students. Global Concepts Charter High School $200,000.00 District: Lackawanna Central School District Average Score: 80.500 The school requests a grant for the expansion of its arts program to include theater, dance, music, audio recording/editing and video recording/editing, all of which will be integrated with core curriculum instruction to provide students with unique opportunities to explore their talents, increase their mastery of core curricula, and expand career exploration opportunities. The school received bonus points for the renovation of the adjacent building, which would enable the school to offer expanded arts programming for all high school students. Great Oaks Charter School $200,000.00 District: NYC CSD 2 Average Score: 84.500 The school requests a grant to support the restoration of Building 333 on Governors Island, a three-story former administration structure built in 1940, to give it new life as the permanent home for the school and space that facilitates a blended learning approach to the education of students. Harbor Science and Arts Charter School $200,000.00 District: NYC CSD 4 Average Score: 106.500 The school requests a grant to enable it to rejuvenate a newly obtained leased space to modern standards. True North Rochester Preparatory Charter School - West Campus $5,880.00 District: Rochester City School District Average Score: 76.000 The school requests a grant to secure a permanent facility for its middle school grade level as the school grows to capacity. Grant funds would support the acquisition and financing of an identified facility in the Rochester community and help ensure the property is ready for school occupancy by August 2014. This is a partial award due to the exhaustion of funds. Williamsburg Ascend Charter School $187,465.00 District: NYC CSD 22 Average Score: 94.000 The school requests a grant to support the renovation of the lower school s permanent facility, a former parochial school. The grant would fully fund the following essential renovations to the school s interior: update and refurbishment of corridors and six classrooms to accommodate three sections each of Kindergarten and grade 1 for the school s opening year, and the addition of two faculty staff toilets.
