PARCC Practice Tools A guidance document to provide your students with the situational learning needed to successfully navigate and utilize the accessibility features available on the PARCC assessments. Prepared by the MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit Office of Shared Accountability Montgomery County Public Schools February 2018 edition

As our high-stakes testing continues to move in the direction of on-line testing platforms, it is important for our students to have had the opportunity to practice and become familiar with the PearsonAccess next (PAN) testing platform and all of its functions. The following document will provide guidance to instructional leadership teams and teachers to make informed decisions about how to incorporate these situational opportunities into their daily lessons and grade level activities leading up to the test administration. There are three options for conducting practice PARCC tests. There are advantages and disadvantages to all three based on the needs of each school, each grade level team. A synopsis of each is below to review. This document is also formatted so that each option can be printed and copies for school staff to utilize. But first, we present a guidance document for how to navigate within the TestNav testing platform and also an orientation to the accessibility features that are available to all students. Quick Guide - TestNav Navigation and Accessibility Features for All Students Pgs. 4-9 This quick guide can be used to show the students the navigation tools and accessibility features that are available to all students in the TestNav platform. This is a great base-line familiarity tool prior to be utilized prior to testing and may be copied to share with teachers as they work with their students during class instruction. Option #1 parcc.pearson.com (non-secure) Pgs. 10-18 Sample Items Tutorials Full-length Practice Tests (paper and online regular and accommodated forms available) Three different types of test preparation are presented at the parcc.pearson.com website. Although Sample Items are presented first in the drop-down menu, we would suggest having your students go through the Tutorials first to acclimate themselves to the accessibility features of the TestNav testing platform. The Tutorial will introduce the students to TestNav 8, the computer program used for PARCC online testing. The Tutorial will help students learn how to find their way through tests using different buttons and screens, and also show students how to use the tools in the toolbar. In the Tutorial, students will get the change to practice with the actions and tool they will use during PARCC testing. Accommodated Tutorials (text-to-speech, screen reader, non-screen reader, American Sign Language and Spanish computer based mathematics (limited to high school students in algebra only), Equation Tutorials and Graphing Calculator Tutorials are also available. Sample Items is a good in-class experience that allows students to try out practice items that include a variety of question types, such as videos, multiple choice, multiple selection, and drag and drop. Teachers can use all or part of the Sample Items presented and review with the class or small group during teacher directed instruction. The Full-length Practice Tests are just that, full tests that contain multiple units just as the real PARCC assessments. These Full-length Practice Tests can be done on-line or printed on Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-2

paper. Accommodated versions of these tests are available in the following versions: text-tospeech (no graphics or with graphics), screen reader, non-screen reader, American Sign Language and Spanish computer based mathematics (limited to high school students in algebra only). The practice test platforms have a default login of Guest, however, users can choose to enter a name or numeric value as a students login when they begin. This is for the teacher s reference when printing reports at the end of the scorable practice tests. This information is not captured or maintained in the system, therefore there is no downloadable report or spreadsheet of student data (see page 27). Option #2 TestNav App (non-secure) Pgs. 19-32 This practice option is simple to use as the TestNav App is already installed on system chromebooks, desktop and laptop computers. By the click of the mouse or touch pad, students can easily get into the TestNav tools to practice with the student accessibility features without having to enter a website address. This flexibility allows teachers to work with small groups or individual students on an as needed basis throughout their instructional period or day. Option #3 PearsonAccess next Training Center (secure) Pgs. 33-64 The Pearson Access next Training Center provides a full length mock practice test complete with Student Testing Tickets and test monitoring that STCs would see during the live PARCC assessments. This practice option is beneficial for schools to conduct as their technology infrastructure trial and to walk through test security measures. The training site does contain accommodated assessments where STCs can practice editing Personal Needs Profiles (PNPs) of students to ensure their particular accommodations are engaged in the testing platform. SCHOOL TIP: All three practice options contain the same test questions, in different order. School leadership teams will need to be aware of this as they make decisions regarding scheduling practice assessments across the grade level and within individual classrooms. SCHOOL TIP: Segments of this Practice Tools document can also be printed for teachers and staff based on the decisions of the Instructional Leadership Team and the school s Testing Team. It can also be pushed out to teachers to pull up on their classroom computer. In addition to these guiding directions, refer to the PAN Guide for detailed instructions on the function and use of PAN. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-3

Quick Guide TestNav Navigation and Accessibility Features for All Students Navigation & Review within TestNav At the top of the student screen, students will see these functions visible from left to right in the toolbar. Text Box Scroll Bar Some test items require the student to scroll through the text. The scroll bar may not be too obvious. Below is an example where the students can find the scroll bar Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-4

Accessibility Features for All Students Continuing across the student tool bar, the next three to five features are located in the middle. The tools vary dependent on the assessment content. Math - ELA - Pointer The pointer is the main tool used while taking the test. It is used to point to and select answer choices. Notepad Students may take notes in the notepad as they formulate their thoughts and ideas. The notepad automatically clears the notes when the student moves to the next question. Five Function Calculator Answer Eliminator The student may choose to eliminate answer choices for selected response questions. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-5

Ruler The Ruler is provided in the toolbar of TestNav when the tool may be required to answer a question. However they are not embedded for the Algebra, Geometry and Algebra II assessments. The ruler will appear on the screen once clicked on in the toolbar. The student will be able to move it around on the screen to take their measurement. Grade 3 Math uses a 1/4 inch ruler Grade 4-8 Math use 1/8 inch Ruler Protractor Protractors are a required tool for grades 4-7 and are an allowable tool for grade 8 and high school. The ruler will appear on the screen once clicked on in the toolbar. The student will be able to move it around on the screen to take their measurement. Zoom and Magnifier Tool During the test, students can make the text or images bigger on the screen by holding down the CTRL and plus (+) key on the keyboard. To make text and images smaller hold down the CTRL and minus (-) key to reset to the orginal size use the CTRL and zero (0) key. There is also a magnifier tool to enlarge one part of the screen, by selecting Enable Magnifier from the drop-down menu in the upper right part of the screen by where the students name appears Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-6

Line Reader The Line Reader tool allows the students to see only one line of text at a time. To enable Line Reader from the drop-down menu in the upper right part of the screen by where the students name appears. Highlight Text The Highlight Text tool allows the student to choose a color to highlight a word or group of words with a specific color. To activate the highlighter, the student can click and drag, doubleclick, or right-click on a word or section of a word, and then drag to select further words. The student then selects their preferred highlighting color. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-7

Word Processing Features Bold, Italics, Underlining, Bullets, Numbered Lists, Undo, Redo, Spell Check and Character Count Students can turn on the spell check when answering an item that requires a textual, extended response. When spell check is on, a squiggly red line appears underneath misspelled words, and students see word suggestions for misspelled words. Spell check does not check words that are all in caps (HELLO) or words that are inverse camel cased (CaMeL). It does check regular camel case (camel). Spell check uses the Hunspell dictionary and requires an Internet connection to compare the typed words with the dictionary on Pearson servers. If there is no Internet connection, spell check does not check the words. Spell check may not be available on all Brief Constructed Response items. The icon will appear when available. There is also a limit to the number of characters and spaces available per question. In this screen shot, there are 902 characters and spaces left (shown in the far right box) for the student to use in their answer. Exhibits Students will find this feature along the right side of the testing screen. As an example, here is where they will click on Exhibits to find the online version of the Mathematics Reference Sheets or other reference materials such as a periodic table in MISA. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-8

Text-to-Speech Tool This tool is turned on in the students PNP for those who will receive the text-to-speech accommodation in the ELA assessment or the text-to-speech accessibility feature in the Math assessment. It will be available to students who will receive the Text-to-Speech accommodation for the English Language Arts/Literacy assessment. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-9

Option #1 parcc.pearson.com (non-secure Sample Items, Tutorials, Full-length Practice Tests) Use this option from a Chromebook, laptop, or a desktop computer. Great for plug-in tutorials during daily instruction. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-10

C. Practice Tests These non-secure pratice tests allow the students to experience what a PARCC assessment looks and feels like. When the student submits the test, they will automatically recive a score. Teachers will be able to print answer keys and scoring rubrics for their reference. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-17

As you can see from the screen shot above, three practice units, in a variety of forms, are available as well as all units in a variety of accommodated paper formats. Answer Keys and Scoring Rubrics Pratice tests have an answer key and scoring rubric under the Resouces Section. Rubrics and answer keys are combined into one file with the exception of Grade 3 ELA/L where contructed response items are not scored. Common Core Indicators are also shown to indicate alignment of each question. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-18

Option #2 Test Nav App (non-secure) Use this option from a chromebook, laptop, or a desktop computer. Great for plug-in tutorials during daily instruction. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-19

Opening a PARCC Practice Test To access the PARCC practice tests, students will need to open the TestNav app from either a Chromebook or under the Testing Folder on the school menu using a desktop. When signing in to the TestNav app, students will encounter this login screen. Students will not need a Username or Password to log in. They will click on Practice Tests to sign in and the practice test will automatically be launched. If the TestNav App has never been launched on the Chromebook, the student will need to select the appropriate test first. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-20

1. Click on the person icon in the upper right corner of the screen 2. Click Choose a Different Customer 3. Choose PARCC Training from the bottom left hand corner of the menu. Audio: Students must click Test Audio before they log into TestNav to ensure that the student can hear the test audio at a comfortable level. Students should not skip this step before starting the test, the volume cannot be changed and the student would have to exit TestNav and repeat the steps above. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-21

The Test Examiner would need to contact the STC to have the test resumed, if this occurs during a secure practice test or the actual administration. If this occurs through the TestNav practice app, just have the student exit and re-enter. Selecting a Tutorial There are two content area tabs to first choose from. In the screen shot below, the English Language Arts/Literacy tab has been chosen and all options of ELA/L tutorials are shown. Choose the appropriate grade level tutorial. Tutorials for Text-to-Speech, American Sign Language and Closed Captioning are also available for students with accommodations. English Language Arts/Literacy Tutorial Tab Mathematics Tutorial Tab Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-22

The Equation Editor The Equation Editor can be a cumbersome part of the PARCC test if a student is not familiar with its functionality. Allow students time to become familiar and proficient with the tool. Choose the appropriate grade level band equation editor tutorial. For Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2, choose the High School Practice with Equation Editor tutorial. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-23

Selecting a Practice Test Once a grade level is chosen, navigate between ELA/L and Mathematics to choose the practice test that you would like students to take. Practice Test Accommodated Forms ELA There are several accommdated forms available including American Sign Language and Closed Captioning for hearing impaired students. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-24

Practice Test Accommodated Forms Mathematics High school students who will be taking the Spanish Algebra assessment may use the Spanish version of the Algebra 1 test to become familiar with the assessment. However, during the official administration these students will be taking the paper version of the Spanish Algebra test which will provide the students with access to both an English and Spanish copy of the test. If a student started on the Spanish online version and became frustrated with the language of the assessment, there is no option at that point to switch to the paper version of the test. The elementary grades will have four units of math available to practice with while the middle and high school practice tests will have three units of math per practice test. To Begin the Practice Tests, have the students click on the appropriate unit button, then 1. Have the student type their name in the box. 2. Click Start Test Now. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-25

Click on the Start Section button. Complete and Submit a Test Students navigate the test using primarily the header bar, however they also encounter different pages between sections and at the end of the test. The screenshots below provide examples and important information about these pages. End Section Page Students see the page below at the end of a section. This page shows which section the student has completed, as well as the number of unanswered questions, questions answered, and bookmarked questions. The student can click the Review button to review questions only in that section. After students leave a section, they cannot go back to that section again. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-26

Section Exit Warning Students see the Section Exit Warning when they click Submit Section. This warning reminds students that they cannot return to this section after they exit it. Students can click Yes to go to the next section, or No to close the warning message and review questions in that section. End of Test Page Students see this page when they reach the end of the last section of the test. This page shows the section number, the number of unanswered questions, questions answered, and bookmarked questions. They can click the Review button to review questions only in that section, or click Submit Final Answers to submit and log out of TestNav. Students cannot go back into the test after they click Submit Final Answers. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-27

Test Submit Warning After the student clicks Submit Final Answers, TestNav displays the Test Submit Warning. This warning confirms that students are ready to exit the test. The warning reminds students that they cannot return to the test when they click Yes, Submit Final Answers. Again, students cannot go back into the test after they click Yes, Submit Final Answers. Scoring At the end of each unit the student will receive a score per test question, which also corresponds with the aligned standard. A score report can only be printed when the practice test is taken on a desktop computer that is networked to a printer. If the school or teacher decides to run a full length practice test, it is suggested that a score sheet be prepared for each student so that they may hand record their score per question. Chromebooks are not able to print documents at this time. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-28

Answer Keys and Scoring Rubrics Pratice tests have an answer key and scoring rubrics (rubrics and answer keys are combined in one file, the teacher can save them to a local folder). Answer keys can be found at the following link: http://www.parcconline.org/assessments/practice-tests Sign Out of TestNav When the student is finished with a Unit, have them click the Sign out button on the middle of the screen or in the upper right corner, Sign out of TestNav. page. When students click Sign out, TestNav logs them out and they see the Logout Complete Paper-Based Practice Should a teacher decide a student would be better served with taking a PARCC practice test on paper he/she could print one for the student. Just as you would have done with an online practice test, the teacher would open a web-browser and enter the link below: Choose a Content Area https://parcc.pearson.com/practice-tests/ Choose the appropriate grade level and then select the Paper-Based test on the far right side of the webpage. There is a Test Booklet and separate Answer Document, the answer document allows up to four pages for extended response items. There is a separate paper-based Answer Key on the lower left side of the page; the teacher will also notice that the Rubric is grade banded. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-30

Test Booklet Answer Document Answer Key Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-31

Grade Banded Rubric Text-to-Speech Functionality Tool for the PARCC Assessments Text-to-Speech Tool Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-32

This tool is turned on in the students PNP for those who will receive the text-to-speech (TTS) accommodation in the ELA assessment or the text-to-speech accessibility feature in the Math assessment. Below is an explanation of the TTS controls and where teachers can find information to practice with students. The TTS player is available on the right hand side of the screen as the student navigates to the items in the test. The TTS player does not automatically begin playing, so the student has to click Play (full read to) for the TTS to begin reading the content. Once the student clicks the play button, the TTS will start and the button changes to a stop button. The student can Stop the TTS at their discretion. The Focus Tool (selected read to) is designed to read a specific paragraph or sentence. This tool can be used for students that have Read Selected Sections for Math only or if a student would like to hear just a portion re-read to them. To use this tool, the student will need to click on the Focus Tool Icon and place their cursor on the sentence to which he/she would like to hear. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-33

Students can adjust the speed of how fast or slow the text is read to them. The TTS samples for students are available at the PARCC Website - parcc.pearson.com or using the TestNav Practice Test App. STC TIP - Read selected is not allowed for ELA as an accommodation. For math, it is an accessibility feature, so a student with selected read aloud on the IEP, 504 or EL plan may have the accessibility feature. Students who do not have a plan but receive a TTS feature during daily instruction may also be considered for having the feature turned on for testing. Prepared by MCPS Testing and Reporting Unit, OSA ~ February 2018-34
