DESIGN & CRAFTS EXHIBITION 2017 SHOWCASE OF WORK BY THIRD YEAR BA (HONS) THEATRE PRACTICE STUDENTS Wednesday 3 Friday 5 May School of Speech & Drama University of London

INTRODUCTION It was once said that if one withdrew all the backstage design and technical staff trained at Central from the London stage the West End would come to a standstill. Of our 1000 students only one-third are actors, but they are the ones who get the media and critical attention. This Exhibition should redress that balance. We can point to many winners of the Linbury Prize for stage design, to the Oliviers for lighting and sound design, and indeed to the Tonys and other US awards. Caroline Townsend leads a distinguished team of specialists across the many and various aspects of our BA (Hons) Theatre Practice courses. From here comes the bedrock of the creative work that makes it all happen. We too easily take it for granted. Great theatre is an alchemy of many skills and much imagination. We hope you will enjoy this insight into a wide range of talent that is about to be launched into the profession. You saw it here first! Gavin Henderson Principal Designers are artists who enjoy working collaboratively and are as excited by words, performance and research as they are by painting, sculpture, fashion and architecture. They are responsible for the visual and sonic realisation of a production. Puppetry embraces design, puppet making and manipulation to devise and collaborate to create storytelling through visual theatre performance. Using historical discussions and intercultural study of traditional practice to inform contemporary and future puppetry performance. Craftspeople are technically skilled and creatively inventive makers, and are an essential part of any production team. They must be sensitive to the stylistic intentions of the designer and director, and be able to research and understand the time, place and narrative of the production. One of the unique features of BA (Hons) Theatre Practice course is the way that specialist disciplines such as these are able to focus on their area of study for three years, but in the dynamic context of collaborative work with all the other theatre making disciplines. This exhibition celebrates the work and accomplishments of the graduating design, puppetry and crafts students throughout their time here at Central. Thank you for joining us. Enjoy the exhibition! BA (HONS) THEATRE PRACTICE OVERVIEW The BA (Hons) Theatre Practice is a programme of specialist courses in the creative and production practices of theatre and associated arts. Based on the processes of traditional theatre practice, students will learn to apply depth and rigorous practice to a wider theatre context and collaborate with professional companies and individuals. Theatre Practice graduates are qualified to work professionally with the critically reflective skills and knowledge necessary to continually develop, innovate and, eventually, lead. They know the importance of mutual respect for the processes of others, and in turn command the respect of their collaborators. Students learn these core lessons through practical projects, while undertaking specialist study in one of the following disciplines: > Costume Construction > Design for the Stage > Performance Arts > Production Lighting > Prop Making > Puppetry: Design & Performance > Scenic Art > Scenic Construction > Stage Management > Technical & Production Management > Theatre Lighting Design > Theatre Sound. Whilst students specialise in one of these subjects, they will work in mixed teams with those from other specialisms on practical projects and productions. There is also the opportunity to work with acting, applied theatre, movement, voice, dramaturgy and writing students, encountering many different models of theatre and performance practice.
