This manual is divided into four sections: An introduction, which describes the assessment and addresses software requirements and test security. Assigning the Third Grade Proficiency Assessment for Ohio to students. Pretest instructions (which you can use to give students a basic orientation of the testing procedure). Instructions on using the Reading Dashboard and New Reports Dashboard to view test scores after students have completed the assessment. Introduction This manual provides general information about the Third Grade Proficiency Assessment for Ohio and specific guidelines for administering the assessment. Test Administrators (TAs) and teachers should carefully read and review the contents of this manual prior to testing to ensure the highest levels of test fidelity. About the Third Grade Proficiency Assessment for Ohio The Third Grade Proficiency Assessment for Ohio is based on Renaissance Learning s Star Reading assessment, which is a computer-adaptive test that measures student achievement on reading skills. As a student takes the assessment, the software selects items based on the student s responses. If the student answers the item correctly, the software increases the difficulty level of the next item. If the student answers incorrectly, the software lowers the difficulty level of the next item. By continually adjusting the difficulty of an item to what the student has shown she can or cannot do, the assessment is tailored to accurately measure each student s level of achievement. Scaled Score A scaled score (SS) is the student s score on the assessment. It is used to report performance for all students on a consistent scale. A computer-adaptive test creates a virtually unlimited number of test forms as it dynamically interacts with the student taking the test. To make the results of all tests comparable, it is necessary to convert all results of the tests to scores on a common scale. Student scores for the Third Grade Proficiency Assessment for Ohio are based on the Unified Scaled Score, which ranges from 200 1400. For more information, see http://doc.renlearn.com/kmnet/r60623.pdf. Software Requirements For the most current system requirements for Star Assessments and other Renaissance Learning software, please visit http://doc.renlearn.com/kmnet/r004312127gjb43d.pdf. Page 1

Test Security Overview Security is a concern in any testing situation, and sound testing procedures are the hallmark of test security. When teachers and proctors consistently follow the procedures presented in this manual before, during, and after testing, they help ensure test results which are true representations of student achievement. Additionally, test security safeguards are built in to the computer-adaptive test design. It is highly unlikely any two students will see the same test items at the same time. Assessments are computer-adaptive based on individual student performance, and test items are selected from a large pool of items. Prior to Testing Preparation for testing is a key component of test fidelity. We recommend that TAs and/or teachers complete the following tasks prior to testing. Create a schedule for testing. Try to avoid distracting locations or times when other students, school bells, or public address announcements can interfere with student concentration. Provide a copy of the schedule to each person involved with testing. Cover or remove any materials on the walls, whiteboard, and other areas that might help students answer test items. Make sure there is enough light and ventilation in the test area. Ensure all testing devices are working properly. If you are administering the test with a tablet or laptop, make sure the battery is adequately charged before testing. Create a seating chart for the testing area. Consider students who may have difficulty concentrating with distractions such as windows, doorways, or classmates. Access students user names and passwords: 1. On the Renaissance Place Home page, select Users. 2. Under Students, select View Students. For a list of the passwords for all of the students in your class, choose the class in the drop-down list. To find the password for an individual student, enter the student s name. Select Search. 3. Select the Passwords tab. To print, select Print Page. It is important to note that teachers can only search for students in their own classes. If you choose to print this information, be sure it is stored in a secure location before and during testing, and destroyed after testing. Read this test administration manual thoroughly and carefully. Day of Testing Make sure you have the correct monitor password; contact your school administrator if you do not have it. Use the Pretest Instructions beginning on page 10 to familiarize students with the assessment. Pages 15 20 can be used to make handouts or project for students to help them more clearly understand the test format. Page 2

Remind students to bring a book to read silently at their seat after they are finished testing to minimize distractions for those who are still testing. Prepare testing computers: start the browser and go to the Renaissance Place address (URL). On the Welcome page, select I m a Student. We recommend enabling full screen mode on your browser to ensure no scrolling is required. Browsers with customizations (bookmark tabs, extensions, etc.) and low-resolution screen settings result in a smaller available space which could result in needing to scroll to see the Next button during testing. Post a Do Not Disturb sign outside the testing environment. Provide a break prior to testing. Students should use the restroom and get a drink of water during this time. General Testing Information Pausing or Stopping a Test In the event a student needs to leave the room unexpectedly while taking a test you can stop a test by selecting Stop Test in the upper-right corner of the screen. A prompt will ask if you want to resume the test later, stop the test, or cancel the action. A student has eight days to resume a test at the point where he or she left off (the student will see a different item, however). Keep in mind that pausing or stopping a test is a nonstandard administration; use this option only when absolutely necessary. See the online help for more information about pausing (https://help.renaissance.com/sr/stopping_a_test) and resuming (https://help.renaissance.com/sr/ Resuming_a_Test) an assessment. Item Time Limits The standard maximum time allowed per question on the Third Grade Reading Proficiency Assessment for Ohio is set by default at 270 seconds (4 minutes, 30 seconds). An extended item time limit of 20 minutes per question can be set for students with special needs who need more time to read or answer the test questions. For more information about how to extend item time limits, see https://help.renaissance.com/sr/4444 (ignore the time limits shown there for Star Reading and Star Reading Enterprise; for the Ohio test, standard time is 270 seconds and extended time is 20 minutes). If extended time is already enabled for a student in Star Reading, it will automatically be enabled for the Third Grade Reading Proficiency Assessment. Student Accommodations For information about assessment accommodations for students with an IEP or 504 Plan or ELLs who have extended time as an accommodation, see http://doc.renlearn.com/kmnet/r60824.pdf. Contact for Support For assistance, call (800) 338-4204. Outside the US, call 1.715.424.3636. Page 3

Assigning the Third Grade Proficiency Assessment for Ohio to Students Note: Before you can assign the third-grade assessment, the district administrator or school administrator needs to enable the Ohio Third Grade Reading Proficiency Assessment Preference in Star Reading. Instructions can be found in the Renaissance Third Grade Proficiency Assessment for Ohio: District/School Test Coordinator Manual. Once the preference has been enabled, the administrator should tell you so that you can begin assigning the assessment to students. 1. In a web browser, log in to Renaissance Place. 2. On the Home page, select Star Reading or Reading Assessments A; in the pop-up menu, select Record Book B. A B 3. In the Star Reading Record Book, you can use the School and Class or Group drop-down lists C to choose which students to assign the assessment to (although you can also choose the students later; see step ). C D 4. Select Assign Ohio Third Grade Reading Proficiency Assessment D. Page 4

5. On the Select Skills to Assess page, use the sentence at the top of the page to select the class or group E you want to assign the assessment to. (If you have already made your choices in step 3, skip ahead to step 6). E When you select the class or group, a pop-up window will open: District administrators and other personnel assigned to more than one school will need to select schools in the Schools column F. Choose Select Schools at the top and then check individual schools to select them, or select All Schools to select all the available schools at once. F G School administrators and other personnel assigned to only one school will not need to select a school. Check the classes and groups you want to assign the assessment to in the Classes and Groups column G. You can select more than one class or group. H I Teachers planning for classes and groups will only see their own classes and groups. Once you have made your choices, select Apply H to save them, or Cancel I to close the pop-up window without saving your changes. 6. Choose the date range you want students to take the assessment during J. J Page 5

You can choose one of the standard weekly time frames or custom dates K. If you choose to use custom dates, you can either type the start and O P end dates (L and K M) or select them from the calendars that open as you click in each field N. You can choose a range of dates as short as one day or as long as 3 weeks. When you re done, select Continue O (or Cancel P if you decide not to use custom dates). Note: If you need to create or edit student groups, select Manage Groups in the upper-right corner of the page. You will go to the Manage Groups page in the Reading Dashboard. (If you have selected multiple classes/groups, the Manage Groups function will not be available.) See https://help.renaissance.com/rdash/groups for more information. 7. Once you have finished selecting classes/groups and assessment dates, select the magnifying glass Q; in the pop-up window that opens above the magnifying glass, choose Select an assessment... L N M Q 8. In the Select an Assessment window, you will see a single assessment listed: Ohio Third Grade Reading Proficiency Assessment. Choose Select R. R Page 6

9. On the Choose Your Assessment page, there will be a single resource shown: the Ohio Third Grade Reading Proficiency Assessment. It will already be added to your plan S. Select Continue T. S T 10. When the Schedule Assessment page opens, you will see a pop-up window confirming the assessment information you have selected up to this point. In the pop-up, you can change the start U or end dates V, or delete the assessment W. When you are done reviewing or changing the information, select Done X. W X U V Page 7

11. On the Schedule Assessment page, the assessment you are scheduling is in the Assessments row Y. (If the range of dates for the assessment is more than five days long, a scrollbar will appear above the calendar row at the top of the page so you can move back and forth through the entire range of dates Z.) Z Y C You can change the dates for the assessment, either by clicking on the dates on the card A or clicking on the gripper dots B and dragging the assessment to a new date. B A Dragging an assessment to a new date will change the start date for that assessment. An assessment that has a start and stop date can have its stop date changed by dragging it past the existing stop date, but dragging it back again will not change the stop date back. Dragging an assessment is best for changing the start date for that assessment. Clicking on an assessment and entering an end date is the preferred way to change the stop date for an assessment. 12. When you have finished assigning the assessment to specific dates, select Create Assessments C. Page 8

13. A message will remind you about what happens when you assign the assessment. Select Continue D to proceed, or Cancel E to continue adjusting the schedule. D E 14. A message will confirm the assignment of the assessments. Select OK F. Once the start date for an assessment arrives, students will see the assessment in the Assignments list on their Home page G. F G Page 9

Read to students You are going to take a reading test that has fill-in-the blank questions. You will answer 50 questions on a computer or a tablet. It will take about 30 minutes to answer all of the questions. Do not worry if someone finishes the test before you because every test is different. Do not worry about how many questions you think you get right, or how many you think you get wrong. Everyone will probably miss some of the questions. The main goal is for you to do the best you can. Picture 1 After you log in to Renaissance Place, look at the Assignment List on the Home page. You will see an entry for the Ohio Third Grade Reading Proficiency Assessment. Select this entry to begin the assessment. Page 11

Picture 2 The test questions have a sentence with a word missing. There will be a list of three or four words that could fit in the blank. Your job is to choose the word that best completes the sentence. Picture 3 Choosing your answer is easy. Use any of these methods to choose and enter your answer. (You can change your answer choice before you enter it.) Each possible answer has a number next to it (1, 2, 3, or 4). To answer with the keyboard, press the number that matches the number of your answer choice. Then, enter your answer choice by pressing Enter or return. Backspace Keyboard To answer with the mouse, click on your answer choice using the left mouse button. Then, enter your answer choice by clicking Next on the screen. Mouse Page 12

Picture 3 (continued) To answer on a tablet, tap your answer choice. Then, enter your answer choice by tapping Next. Picture 4 Tablet When you choose an answer, a blue highlight will appear around it (as shown). This only shows you which answer you selected. It does not mean that you selected the correct answer. The program also puts the word you picked in the blank so you can see how it fits in the sentence. To change your answer, press the number of your new answer choice, click on it with the mouse, or tap it (if you are using a tablet). The program will highlight your new choice and fill in the blank with the word so you can see it in the sentence. You cannot change your answer after you press Enter or return, or click or tap Next. Picture 5 If you see a picture of a clock at the top of the screen, time is almost up for that question. Choose your answer quickly. If you don t choose an answer in time, you will see a message that says time is up for that question. The next question will come up in a few seconds, so be ready. Page 13

Picture 6 Before you take the test, you will get some practice questions. The practice questions look just like the real test. When you finish answering the practice questions, the program will show you this message. When the teacher or test monitor tells you to begin, select OK. Relax and get ready; the first question will come up soon. Keep answering the questions until the computer tells you that you have finished the test. If you don t know the answer to a question, go ahead and choose what you think is the best answer. When you have finished the test, tell the teacher or test monitor that you are finished so the next student can get started. If you have any questions about this test, please ask them now. Once the test starts, the teacher or test monitor will not be able to explain any of the words to you or tell you if you have picked the right answer. Have fun, and do your best! Page 14

Viewing Student Assessment Data There are two places where you can go to view student assessment data: For immediate results, the Reading Dashboard (see below) can be used to view students Scaled Scores only following the testing session. For more detailed reports, use the New Reports Dashboard (see page 22) the day after the testing session; the data for the reports is compiled overnight. Reading Dashboard Once students have finished taking the assessment, you can immediately view their Scaled Scores (see page 1) by using the Reading Dashboard. 1. In a web browser, log in to Renaissance Place. 2. On the Renaissance Place Home page, select Reading Dashboard in the Dashboards and Reporting section A. A 3. On the Reading Dashboard Navigator page, select one of the following three reports; consult the linked help topic for instructions on viewing the dashboards: B C D B Review Student Results: https://help.renaissance.com/trkdash/30003 C Track Student Work: https://help.renaissance.com/trkdash/30004 D View Assessment Data: https://help.renaissance.com/trkdash/30005 Page 21

New Reports Dashboard The day after students have finished taking the assessment, you can view the test results on two reports available through the New Reports Dashboard: the Ohio Third Grade Reading Proficiency Assessment - Student Score Report and the Ohio Third Grade Reading Proficiency Assessment - Student Score Summary Report. The test results you can see vary depending on your position: District administrators: can see test results for any student in the district School administrators: can see test results for any student in their school Teachers: can see test results for their own students Note: Reports link students to the school they most recently tested at. For example, Richard Mason (a student) is enrolled at East Washington Elementary, where he took the assessment at the start of the school year. Three months later, his enrollment is changed to South Washington Elementary, where he takes another assessment. Reports run after this second assessment would show Richard s data at South Washington; when the enrollment status of a student changes from one school to another, the data is no longer available at the previous school. Ohio Third Grade Reading Proficiency Assessment - Student Score Report 1. In a web browser, log in to Renaissance Place. 2. On the Renaissance Place Home page, select New Reports in the Dashboards and Reporting section A. A 3.
