Our emphasis is on linguistic competency in four components; listening, speaking, reading and writing. There is, however, another important feature of language, which is the knowledge and understanding of the target culture. The instructor will introduce and explain new expressions and grammar patterns, give you the opportunities to practice them, and help you learn Japanese in daily situations within cultural and social contexts. You will gradually gain higher communicative competency in the Japanese language as a whole. This course is certified for the SAS Core Curriculum and can be used to meet an Areas of Inquiry goal: Understand the nature of human languages and their speakers. (SAS Core Code is AHq.)

This course is designed for those who have completed Japanese 201. If you have taken Japanese of this level at a different university, you must see the instructor immediately regarding placement. Course Objectives: At the end of the semester, you will be able - to read and write about 100 more kanji (31 from Genki and 65 from IJ). - to read and write more complicated sentences. - to use accurate and contextually appropriate forms of language, especially honorific and humble forms of Japanese. - to ask favors and permissions and to make questions with more natural and politer ways. - to deepen your understanding of Japanese culture, lifestyle, and customs. Grading: Regular, on-time attendance 4% Active Participation 3% Assignments 10% Language Lab attendance 2% Quizzes 10% End-of-Lesson Test 15% Presentation 5% Oral Examination 8% Midterm Examination 16% Final Examination 27% Attendance: Regular on-time attendance is absolutely necessary. If you expect to miss classes, please use the University absence reporting website https://sims.rutgers.edu/ssra/ to indicate the date and reason for your absence. An email will be automatically sent to the instructor. In cases such as a job interview, a conference, and other inevitable commitments, the student is responsible to report to the instructor BEFORE the date of the engagement. In these instances the students will be excused. Any other absences will be considered an unexcused absence. More than 4 absences will negatively affect your grade. Every 3 times of coming in late or leaving early without excusable reason will be also counted as one absence. Please be notified that 14 absences (= one third of the classes) or more will not allow you to pass this course. Students who are absent from class because of religious observance will be excused without penalty and will be allowed the make-up of work missed because of such absence. Please provide timely notification to your instructor. It is YOUR responsibility to keep up with what you have missed for any reason. If you are traveling from another campus to this class and are having difficulty getting to class on time, please let the instructor be aware of your situation.

Participation: You are expected to voluntarily ask and answer the questions, present your own ideas, and discuss with the classmates and the instructor. In order to participate actively in class with accuracy and fluency, you are expected to read the textbook carefully, answer the questions in the textbook or the workbook, and learn the vocabulary according to the course schedule before coming to class. Make sure to review constantly, going back to the earlier lessons frequently. Assignments: Workbook assignments are regularly assigned. (See Schedule.) There will be additional assignments from time to time. Your completed homework should be turned in at the beginning of class on the due date to be accepted for full credit. Those submitted later but before the next class starts will earn half of the credit. Those submitted even later than that will earn only one fourth of the credit. If you cannot submit your homework because of your absence, you can submit it at the beginning of the next class and get full credit. Be sure to check your daily schedule carefully. Papers containing many errors and/or blanks must be re-submitted to get credit. Error correction? incomprehensive V vocabulary error S misspelling P particle error C conjugation error T tense error K kanji error K write in kanji or katakana Language Lab: Quizzes: You are required to study at the language lab for 80 minutes per lesson at minimum for Genki textbook (Lesson 22 & 23). Study lesson 22, for example, at least 80 minutes before we start lesson 23 in the class. For IJ textbook, you are not required to study at the language lab because you have the same audio material. It is vital for your acquisition of Japanese to be exposed to its sounds as much and often as possible. It is preferable for you to visit the lab three or four times per lesson rather than one 80-minute-visit. In addition to the Lab in LLB, you can listen to the same audio materials at Ruth Adams Building #102 (Douglass Campus) and Tillett Hall #202 (Livingston Campus). If you use the Lab in LLB at College Avenue, you can check your lab attendance at http://ruhere.rutgers.edu There will be no make-ups for lab attendance. One kanji quiz and one vocabulary quiz will be held per lesson. The 11 best scores out of 14 quizzes will be counted for you final grade. Due to the nature of the above policy, no make-ups will be allowed. If you are late to class, you won t be given extra time to complete the quizzes.

Lesson Test: Presentation: The test for Lesson 1 of IJ textbook will be included in the midterm exam and the one for Lesson 5 of IJ will be included in the final exam. If you are late to class, no extra time will be given to complete the tests. No make-ups will be arranged unless you have a valid reason (e.g. conference, job interview, illness, etc.). Please notify your instructor beforehand if possible. Skit presentation is scheduled on Thursday, April 26th. You will form a group of 3, and work together to create a skit. Each group will have 6-7 minutes. Submit your draft (double-spaced) by Friday, April 13th, and the final script after your presentation. Other details will be announced later in class. Oral Exam: An oral exam is scheduled for the last class. It will be approximately for 5 to 6 minutes per student. Details will be explained in class before the test. Midterm Exam & The midterm exam will be held in the regular class period, and the final Final Exam: exam will be held according to the University schedule. You must take them ON THE DAYS SCHEDULED. If you are late to class, you won t be given extra time to complete the examinations. Make-ups will be allowed only with a valid reason with an official document. Turn in a doctor s letter or other documentation, and arrange the time and place for a make-up ASAP with the instructor. Details will be explained in class before each examination. Other: Academic integrity is an extremely important issue. Students who copy other people's assignments, quizzes, tests, or examinations will not receive any credit. You must NOT give or receive answers to/from other students. There will be NO extra credit assignment. If you are worried about your grade, come to see your instructor as soon and as often as possible for some help.
