CONTENTS 3 INITIATIVE THE MAGAZINE FOR MEMBERS OF THE GERMAN-BRITISH CHAMBER OF INDUSTRY & COMMERCE DIRECTOR'S LETTER Brexit negotiations will not become easier At the time of writing, a new grand coalition government has just been agreed by Germany s Christian Democrats, their Bavarian sister party and the Social Democrats. However, the final say on it rests with the members of the Social Democratic Party. Whether they will agree to form another coalition government with Angela Merkel is by no means certain. The front cover of this magazine shows the port of Dover and we sincerely hope that in a year s time the picture will be the same and that we will not see a clogged-up port as a result of a no-deal outcome because political leaders were unable to negotiate constructively. Many on the British side had always hoped that Germany would put in a word for the UK so that she would get a more favourable deal than otherwise. Whether this hope is or was ever justified still remains to be seen. Furthermore, many commentators view the agreed political agenda of the grand coalition as more of the same and lacking in radically new policies neither on a domestic nor on a European or international level. Germany faces many challenges, ranging from demographics, immigration and education to digitalisation and it is important for her long-term success that these are properly addressed. Should the party members reject the proposals, we would be back to the drawing board and Germany would enter a further period without decisive leadership. The latter also appears to be lacking in the UK, and with two major European governments suffering from this condition, Brexit negotiations at least in the short run will not become easier. Assuming the agreed coalition is confirmed by March 2018, it is crucial that further measures are introduced to make Germany more competitive and fit for the future, so that she can also play a proper part in leading Europe in an ever-fragmenting world. 4 IN GOOD COMPANY Enjoy challenge and change and do not be put off by angst Interview with Patricia Godfrey Chairperson of the German-British Chamber of Industry & Commerce Patricia Godfrey is Chairperson of the German-British Chamber of Industry & Commerce and the first woman to hold the post. Patricia has been a partner with CMS Cameron McKenna Nabarro Olswang LLP since 1991. She studied law at the London School of Economics and has throughout her career maintained a close relationship with Germany having worked with a number of German clients. In our interview she talks about the key factors of success and why the Lehman crash was a pivotal moment in her career. 1 How did you decide to pursue the career that you are working in today? The wide variety of career options a law degree offered (and a guiding steer from my father) led me to study law at LSE. This included some German law options which I was able to put to good use when I went on to qualify at Pritchard Englefield & Tobin, a niche firm with a fantastic German client base. I always thought I would move from private practice into industry, but every time I got restless a new challenge arose. Next year I will celebrate 30 years at CMS Nabarro Olswang LLP, so if the urge resurfaces, I need to get on with it! 2 What was a pivotal moment in your career? The financial crisis of 2007/8. On the eve of the Lehman crash, I got a call from a very stressed US hedge fund client leading me to spend virtually every hour of that weekend boning up on the sector-specific issues; comforting myself that such a thing hadn t happened before, so other advisors were in exactly the same boat. The client never materialised (to my relief it has to be said), but I went on to be retained by three key administrators of Lehman entities around the world, which kept me suitably challenged for many years to come. 3 If you had to give one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be? Find something that you have a passion for and work hard, relish challenge and be prepared to persevere even in the face of adversity. We all spend too much time at work to be miserable, so if you are really not enjoying what you do, be prepared to confront the problem and, if necessary, find a role and place that suits you. Apart from dragging yourself down, your negative persona is bound to have an effect on those around you. 4 What advantages does membership of the German-British Chamber of Industry & Commerce bring you? A wide network of colleagues and contacts across a range of industries with a common interest in promoting German-British business interests. In addition, the wide offering to members in terms of support, events and guidance is invaluable, none of which would be possible without the excellent team at Buckingham Gate under the stellar stewardship of Ulrich! On a personal level I enjoy the collegiality of my fellow Council members as well as the privilege and challenge of chairing the Council. 5 What challenges do you anticipate for your industry in the coming years? Continued disruption and change in a sector that some would say has got away with doing things in the same way for too many years. Technology and innovation are key to the future of the legal profession and must be fully embraced. 6 What are the trends for your field of industry? As a restructuring lawyer, I see a growing number of businesses struggling. The demise of Carillion has sent shock waves through not just the construction and projects sector but the wider business community. This is an example of a sector where various parties are highly dependent on one another and one failure can have significant repercussions elsewhere. 7 What do you appreciate about the British and what could the British learn from the Germans? Coming from Dublin, that s a good one! I admire the British tolerance, their pragmatism and ability to innovate. I appreciate the German attention to detail and pursuit of long-term success over short-term gain. 8 What has been a key element of your success? I like to think I have always worked hard and been nice to people. Being nice to people doesn t always mean telling them what they want to hear but it s important to deal with people at all levels with respect and honesty. Aside from that, I enjoy challenge and change whilst not being put off by a degree of angst.

DON T LET DATA SECURITY KEEP YOU UP AT NIGHT We are all aware of the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which will come into force on 25 May 2018, but data security isn t a new term for TA Triumph-Adler. Technology brings enormous benefits to today s workplace. However, it can also bring risks, and sometimes these risks come from the unlikeliest of sources. Take the printer, for instance. Used every day, printers and multifunctional devices (MFDs) are often taken for granted. We use them to print, scan, copy and store a vast range of documents and information from our PCs and mobile devices and then forget about them. The key word is store and the trouble is these devices aren t quite so quick to forget about us because all these machines effectively have a substantial hard disk which, if unsecured, can pose a major data risk. Anyone who has gone through the hair-pulling frustration of accidentally deleting something from their computer s hard drive will probably know that with the help of the right expert, that data can be retrieved. The same is true for printers and MFDs. Once we understand that printers store data, the risks become obvious. A data leak could cause huge reputational and financial damage to a company as well as personal damage to individuals. MEMBER FORUM Pinsent Masons breaks into the Top 50 law firms in Germany Pinsent Masons has been ranked among the top 50 law firms in Germany for the first time. It follows a period of significant investment and expansion for the firm during the five years Pinsent Masons has been operating in Germany. With offices in Munich and Düsseldorf it has been growing from a team of seven partners in 2012 to a team of around 150 people, including almost 50 partners. The effort certainly paid off, as Pinsent Masons, with its structured management approach, is rapidly approaching its goal of becoming a full-service firm. The annual ranking, published by influential legal publisher JUVE, acknowledges Pinsent Masons success in establishing a hard-hitting German team specialising in interdisciplinary advice to the technology and energy sectors. Ulrich Lohmann, German Litigation Partner at Pinsent Masons, is delighted about the announcement and believes that the success is particularly due to excellent team work and the continued commitment to meeting the needs of clients, who are praising the firm s broad spectrum of advice. 9 Print devices don t have to be the weak link in your office and TA Triumph- Adler can securely provide the solutions. IDENTIFICATION AND AUTHENTICATION TA Triumph-Adler MFDs/printers can help an administrator manage authorisation as they can appropriately give a different level of authorisation to each person such as general user or administrator. ID CARD AUTHENTICATION Authentication with an ID card, such as an employee card, enables Department Management and User Management features. COMMUNICATION CHANNEL PROTECTION A variety of protocols are available, thereby effectively protecting data against alterations or leakage via the network. Taking the above into consideration, when data is sent to a TA Triumph- Adler device it is encrypted during transmission and can only be printed once an authorised user logs into the system with ID Card or username and password. 10 MEMBER FORUM Dover next time you come through, why not stop and explore it? Our Chamber member Kerstin Müller is a huge fan of Dover, as are Dame Vera Lynn and the millions of tourists a year who photograph its geological landmark, the white chalk cliffs. Here Kerstin explains why a visit to Dover (a destination she knows well as one of its qualified Blue Badge Tourist Guides) is a must for anyone with a sense of history and adventure. Dover the only major harbour left in the South-East is full of history and hidden gems. Did you know, for instance, that its museum is exhibiting a 3,000-year-old boat? It was found under today s town where it was preserved in the mud of the river Dour proof that the Iron Age people of our island already had trading relations along the coast and across the Channel. Worth a visit are also the substantial remains of a Roman lighthouse at Dover Castle, one of three lighthouses built to help ships navigate the Channel and arrive safely into the harbour. You can also explore a Saxon church right next to it and, of course, the Medieval Keep, built by the Norman invaders after 1066. There are fascinating wartime tunnels to explore, where an amazing display illustrates the retreat to Dunkirk in May/June 1940 and the nine days of frantically rescuing 338,000 soldiers using small boats to get them home. The Western Heights on the opposite side of the river are some of the most impressive fortifications in Britain. The Drop Redoubt, a hidden world in itself, was carved out of the hilltop and built of bricks to withstand a possible invasion by Napoleon. During the summer months a group of volunteers opens Lufthansa is the only five-star airline in Europe As the first airline outside Asia, Lufthansa has received five-star certification from British aviation consulting specialist Skytrax. This puts Lufthansa in the select group of now ten airlines that have been given this coveted rating. The Skytrax jury has already been awarding five stars to Lufthansa First Class for years now the entire airline has received the same certification. The award is a well-deserved recognition of our major efforts to make Lufthansa one of the world s leading premium airlines again, says Carsten Spohr, Chairman of the Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. Everyone at Lufthansa the fort to the public on special occasions, and it is an absolutely spectacular sight. You can also enjoy great walking tours in the White Cliffs Country Park, passing WWII deep shelters and a WWI sound mirror, which is open to the public at weekends during the summer months. Numerous micro pubs in Dover proudly serve typical real ale, and why not stop by the White Horse Inn to find out about their writings on the wall? * To discover more of Dover s fascinating history and sights, please contact Kerstin Müller MITG, Qualified Blue Badge Tourist Guide on: Tour Guide Kerstin or @GuidingIsQueen can be proud of this certification, especially our colleagues in the cabins and cockpits and on the ground who fulfil our premium promise every day in their interactions with our passengers. The testers at Skytrax travel with the perspective of a passenger. For their ratings, they evaluate the service quality of the respective airline with comprehensive assessments on the ground and in the air in up to 800 categories. For Skytrax, the consistency with which Lufthansa has forged ahead with the modernisation of its product was a key consideration in the decision to award the fifth star. Lufthansa also scored points with the new Lufthansa app and a wide variety of digital services on the ground and on board. Five-Star Airline Lufthansa Skytrax In addition to its airline ratings, Skytrax also issues an annual ranking of the most popular airlines. At the 2017 World Airline Awards Lufthansa won the award for the best airline in Europe and seventh worldwide.

On 20 November 2017, around 600 visitors took the opportunity to meet representatives of German companies as well as British companies with important business links to German-speaking countries. Participating companies and organisations included: Allianz, American Express, BMW Group, Boston Consulting Group, Commerzbank AG, The European Commission Representation in the UK, the European College of Business and Management, Lidl, LSE German Society, Non-Stop Recruitment, Peirene Press, Robert Bosch and Siemens. had the opportunity to win fantastic prizes in a quiz about the German language, Germany and the represented companies. The partner organisations the Goethe-Institut London, UK-German Connection and DAAD United Kingdom and Ireland were also on hand to offer information and advice to visitors. The German Career Fair was organised in partnership with the Greater London German Network. German companies account for over 500,000 jobs in Britain and require highly-qualified young professionals who are interested in pursuing a career in the UK, in Germany or elsewhere abroad. According to the Confederation of British Industry, 47% of British employers rate knowledge of German as useful for their business, and therefore students and graduates with German language skills are highly sought after. Pupils and students were able to test their language skills in specific job training sessions, offered by staff and students from the London School of Economics and Queen s University Belfast. In addition, they The Fair was jointly organised by the German Embassy London and the German-British Chamber of Industry & Commerce in exclusive collaboration with the London School of Economics. How to reduce translation costs by using SAP Translation You might not be aware of it, but there is a thing called SAP Translation. It is niche, it requires real, specialist knowledge and it might be relevant to your company if: you use SAP software, you have developed customisations, add-ons or plug-ins that need to be localised for users working in international subsidiaries, you need your master data or your product translated into other languages. Beyond linguistic mastery, SAP Translation requires a very specific set of skills: in-depth knowledge of ABAP, knowledge of SAP-System Translation transactions, knowledge of SAP products and knowledge of the SAP Lingo used in the relevant countries. Hence you will need SAP localisation experts to guide you and advise you on the best and most cost-effective strategy to follow and help you execute it. Interlanguage Translation Ltd (an ASAP Globalizers Company) is the only SAP Language Services Partner certified by SAP to offer these services in the UK and Ireland. So why is it so important to work with experts? It is essential mainly because you need SAP technical consultancy coupled with language expertise, especially when you work within your SAP system with very high translation volumes, multiple releases, multiple target languages and parallel developments. Our consultancy services help you scope the project and define and set up the translation environment in a very efficient and transparent way so that you know your costs from the very beginning. Our linguists are experts in the use of SAP translation transactions, understand their logic and abide by strict QA requirements. If necessary, they can even test your final product. Rest assured that we will always advise you on what is best in your specific circumstances because we strive to help you spend as wisely and efficiently as possible. ILT, your SAP Language Services Partner in the UK and Ireland.
