OVERVIEW The Coimbra Group is a network of 38 universities founded in 1985 and formally constituted by Charter in 1987 with 4 main characteristics: - high-quality research universities - multi-disciplinary, comprehensive; - long-established in university cities/ student friendly cities. It is the purpose of the Group to influence European educational policy and to develop best practice through mutual exchange of experience.

The Coimbra Group is committed to the promotion of academic collaboration between its members and their critical mass places it as an important stakeholder, hence providing potential influence on policy making.

LATIN AMERICA RATIONALE The Latin America Working Group will pursue the development of synergies among CG universities in order to increase the quality and quantity the cooperation with Latin American institutions, networks and agencies, materialized in the EU-CELAC strategic partnership. Expected outcomes: Increased relevance of the Coimbra Group as a stakeholder and partner in the EU-CELAC cooperation by establishing bridges with relevant agencies and decision-making bodies and participanting in policy definition; Improved knowledge among CG universities about Latin American institutions and its education, research and innovation systems; Develop links with Latin American networks in order to increase the outreach of the Coimbra Group, taking advantage of funding opportunities to develop joint projects.

LATIN AMERICA WORKING GROUP PAST ACTIVITIES Erasmus Mundus Actions 2 & 3: 16 members of Latin America Task Force involved in the past 4 years Scholarship Programme for Young Professionals & Researchers from Latin American universities 14 participating Latin American countries + 263 applicants = 25 grantees Cooperation with other networks: GCUB Grupo Coimbra de Universidades Brasileiras AUGM Asociación de Universidades Grupo Montevideo - Thematic seminars in Leiden; - Winter school in Salamanca; - Coimbra Group publication of books/monographs

LATIN AMERICA WORKING GROUP FUTURE PROJECTS - Identify other Latin American institutions/networks in order to improve implementation of the Working Group interactions; - Identify Latin American alumni of European universities to ensure wider contacts with civil society; - Launch BE_a_DOC Programme: mobility of researchers and PhD students between the CG and GCUB.

BE_a_DOC Brazil-Europe Doctoral and Research Programme 2016 Exchange programme between the CG and the GCUB for PhD students and researchers; Web platform with academic offer per university; Pratical information; Contact person details; Online application; Call for proposals already drafted.

CONCLUSIONS Network Cooperation has room to improve: New network partnerships in Latin America Improve knowledge about Latin American and promote the EHEA among other Latin American networks Exchange of good pratices Find synergies and new funding opportunities for activities which share the same goals
