Supplementary Authorizations and For Multiple Subject and Single Subject Teaching Credentials No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 and expands on major reforms particularly in areas of state academic standards, assessment, accountability, and school improvement. It specifically requires all public school teachers who teach core academic subjects to be considered highly qualified teachers. NCLB Definitions Core Academic Subject Areas: English (inclusive of drama/theatre), Reading/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Foreign Languages, Civics/Government, Economics, Arts (inclusive of music, art, dance) History and Geography. Highly Qualified Teacher: A teacher who has a California Credential. In addition the teacher must hold a Bachelor s Degree or have passed a CSET Exam in the subject that they teach. 1

Supplementary Authorizations and In an effort to allow California Credential holders to become compliant with NCLB, California adopted Subject Matter Authorizations, which are equivalent to a major in a subject. Supplementary Authorizations are also still available to California teachers. What is a Supplementary Authorization? It may only be added to a valid basic teaching credential It is equivalent to a teaching minor It is not NCLB compliant It does NOT take the place of subject matter competency for your initial credential What is the advantage for adding a Supplementary Authorization to my teaching credential? Indicates to a school district that you have background in a particular subject Indicates that you are making progress towards subject matter compliance for NCLB Under the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, core academic subjects were established as: Art, English, Languages other than English, Mathematics, Music, Science & Social Science Non-core academic subject supplementary authorizations will continue to be available in subjects such as agriculture, business, computer concepts and applications, health science, home economics & industrial arts 2

Supplementary Authorizations Two Types Introductory and Specific MS can add Introductory ONLY (broad subject areas for service in grades 9 and below) SS can add both Introductory (broad subject areas for service in grades 9 and below) and Specific (for service in grades K-12) Both require 20 semester units (lower and upper division) or 10 semester units (upper division only) or degree (Major) in subject area requested unless based on a major in the subject Two Ways to Qualify for a Supplementary Authorization 1. A major from a regionally-accredited college or university in a subject from the approved supplement list. 2. 20 semester units (lower and upper division) or 10 semester units (upper division only) unless based on a major in the subject. Supplementary Authorization Qualifications Continued. At least one course in each of the specified areas The balance of the 10 or 20 semester units may be in any course within the subject category (ELECTIVES). A grade of C or higher is required in every course used to meet this requirement. Education and education methodology classes will not be counted Non-remedial courses are those which are applicable to a bachelor s degree or a higher degree unless based on a major in the subject. 3

Tips for determining whether or not you qualify for a particular supplementary authorization: Mathematics Completion of three (3) courses in calculus OR Completion Of: College Algebra Geometry Development of the real number system or introduction to mathematics Electives May include: One (1) Statistics course One (1) Math-based computer or technology course Tips for determining whether or not you qualify for a particular supplementary authorization: SCIENCE (A pair of two-sequence courses and a lab are required) Biological Sciences - two courses in biology BIOL 101 & BIOL 102 would work as a sequence; or an upper and lower division Biology. A course or course content cannot be repeated and counted as a part of the sequence. Geosciences Geoscience courses include meteorology, geology, oceanography and astronomy. Any combination of two courses in geoscience will count as a sequence; i.e. Oceanography 101 and Astronomy 101 could be counted as a sequence. unless based on a major in the subject. Science continued.. Physics & Chemistry These sequence patterns are similar to Biological Science. For example Physics 201 & 202 or Chemistry 150 and Organic Chemistry 202 can be considered sequences. Physical Science courses will not satisfy the physics, chemistry, or geoscience sequence requirement. However these units can be counted towards Elective unit work. 4

Tips for determining whether or not you qualify for a particular supplementary authorization: Social Science United States Government must be a political science course Electives - sociology, history, political science, anthropology, psychology, economics, etc. unless based on a major in the subject. How to convert Quarter Units to Semester Units Multiply the Quarter Units x 2 and divide by 3 Example: 4 Qtr units = 2.67 semester units 3 Qtr units = 2 semester units In the CORE SUBJECT AREAS For Multiple Subject and Single Subject Teacher Credential Candidates are NCLB COMPLIANT. 5

What is a Subject Matter Authorization? It may ONLY be added to a valid basic teaching credential. It does not satisfy Subject Matter Competency for an initial teaching credential. It is equivalent to a degree major. It is compliant with NCLB. Two Types Type 1: Introductory 1. Must have valid teaching credential AND 2. BA or higher degree in subject OR 32 semester units in the subject area Minimum three (3) semester or four (4) quarter units in each specific content area except science Science requires six (6) semester or eight (8) quarter units in each specific content area Grade of C or better in each course Authorizes departmentalized teaching grade 9 and below Non-remedial coursework may be used as electives to meet unit requirement are NCLB compliant Introductory Subject Matter Authorizations in Core Areas Introductory may be added to both multiple and single subject credential. Introductory are available in Art, English, Languages other than English (LOTE), Mathematics, Music, Science, and Social Science. 6

Type 2: Specific 1. Must have valid credential AND 2. B.A. degree or higher OR 32 semester units except history which requires 16 semester units in both world history & U. S history Grade of C or better in all courses Non-remedial coursework may be used to as electives to meet unit requirements Authorizes departmentalized teaching K-12 are NCLB COMPLIANT. Specific in Core Areas Specific may be added to both multiple and single subject Credentials Specific are available in: Art History/Appreciation, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Civics/Government, Dance, Drama/Theater, Economics, English Composition, Geography, Geosciences, History, Instrumental Music, Literature, Photography, Physics, Plant Science, Three-Dimensional Art, Two-Dimensional Art, Vocal Music are NCLB Compliant Please take out your transcripts, and let s fill in the worksheets together. 7
