Math 1314.710 Course Syllabus: Summer 2017 College Algebra Mathematics / Physics Department Class meets: Online Instructor: Mr. Harley Office: CB 340 Office Hours: MTWR 9am to 10am E-mail address: dharley@delmar.edu Phone: (361) 698-1570 COLLEGE ALGEBRA: This course will utilize the MyMathLab computer program. This program is Internet based so Internet access is essential. The text associated with this class is College Algebra by Lial, Hornsby, Schneider, and Daniels, Twelveth Edition, (ISBN-10: 0134217454, ISBN-13: 9780134217451). Each new text includes a MyMathLab card (Also known as a Student Access Kit, which contains a Student Access Code) and a set of Digital Video Tutors (ISBN-10: 0-321-53047-0). The Student Access Code can also be purchased online when you register for Course Compass. The website is www.coursecompass.com. The MyMathLab program does not work on Mac Computers and it works best on the Goggle Chrome Web Browser. You will need three things to register for Course Compass: a valid email address, a student access code, and a course ID. Course Compass Course ID: harley92965 STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course students will have the algebraic skills required for the study of higher mathematical courses. In particular, the student will be able to: Interpret the complex number system and perform operations on complex numbers Solve linear and quadratic equations/inequalities, use the quadratic formula Apply quadratic models to real-life situations Solve rational, radical and quadratic equations Use the distance and midpoint formulas for calculation, including applications to circles Identify the domain and range of various functions and sketch their graphs Perform operations on and find compositions of functions Utilize and graph inverse functions Use the properties of exponents and logarithms to manipulate expressions Solve exponential and logarithmic equations Solve systems of linear and non-linear equations Identify and graph conic sections Solve application problems Interpret the concepts of algebra numerically, symbolically, graphically and verbally Analyze a problem and solve it using appropriate technology. Question: How can I do my homework when Course Compass is down? Answer: Use the backdoor. If coursecompass.com is acting up or it won't let you login because their server is down, try using the backdoor. Go to MathXL.com. On the left hand side, you should see "MyMathLab Log In" with "backdoor" in parenthesis underneath it...enter this way. There will be some physical differences, but you should be able to get to your assignments. Calculator: The TI-83 or TI-84 calculator is mandatory for this course. Grading policy Students will be given four tests this semester. Three major tests will be scheduled during the semester and the final exam will be administered at the appropriate time during finals week. There are 21 quizzes, one for each section. Homework is calculated as part of your grade.

Online test and quiz dates are easily identified on the course calendar. Tests are timed (50 minutes). Tests are limited no more than 20 questions. Quizzes are limited to no more than five questions. MyMathLab automatically takes the better grade. Homework counts as 15% of your overall grade. It s possible to rework any homework assignment even after the due date and receive the better grade. Grades: Homework: 15% 21 Quizzes: 12% (3 lowest quiz scores will be dropped) Test 1 Review: 2% (Must attended review session Monday, June 12 th from 5pm to 7pm) An additional 10 bonus points will be added to your test 1 grade if you complete your practice test 1 100% before you leave the test review. Test 2 Review: 2% (Must attended review session Wednesday, June 28 th from 5pm to 7pm) An additional 10 bonus points will be added to your test 2 grade if you complete your practice test 2 100% before you leave the test review. Test 3 Review: 2% (Must attended review session Monday, July 17 th from 5pm to 7pm) An additional 10 bonus points will be added to your test 3 grade if you complete your practice test 3 100% before you leave the test review. Test 4 Review: 2% (Must attended review session Monday, August 7 th from 5pm to 7pm) An additional 10 bonus points will be added to your test 4 grade if you complete your practice test 4 100% before you leave the test review. A 100% on all homework, a 100% on all quizzes, a 100% on Test 1, a 100% on Test 2, a 100% on Test 3, a 100% on Test 4, or a 100% on your 4 graded practice exams can substitute for one or more of the test reviews. You will be permitted to use a calculator and scratch paper, but no other notes will be permitted. You can receive up to 10 bonus points on the final exam if you complete 100% of all your homework. A 91% overall average on homework will get you 1 point on the final exam, a 92% will get you 2 points and so forth up to 10 points if you have 100% on your overall homework average. Bonus Points: A maximum of 5 bonus points can be earned for either doing a demonstration or a WebQuest. Details will follow later in the course. These bonus points will be added to your first exam. Make-up policy: Your ability to access the Internet is essential. I am not responsible for technical problems that occur. You are required to find a reliable Internet ready computer. There are dependable computer in the Math

Learning Center (CB116), housed in the Cole s Building. But I am not responsible for technical problems that occur on those computers either. Homework can be worked on after the due date. Absence Policy: Absences: You are required to log on to Course Compass for a minimum of four hours per week. Failure to log on for a minimum of six hours per week will be considered as an absence. If you are absent and your overall grade is below a 70%, you may be dropped from the course. The 4 hours per week is just a minimum amount that you must do in order to not be considered absent. In order to be successful in this course, I expect most students will have to spend between 8 to 10 hours each week doing homework and taking quizzes. If you are dropped from the course, I will reinstate you once your overall average is above a 70% for the course. Date Min. Hours Date Min. If you choose to withdraw, you must go to the Registrar s Office in person to withdraw from class. The drop date for Summer 2017 is Monday, August 7 th. You will receive an automatic W if the drop is made prior to, or, on the official drop date. Inclement Weather: You should check for updated messages using the DMC Information Line at 698-1600 as well as checking with local television and radio stations for updates when there are severe changes in weather conditions. You are expected to make your own decisions regarding your travel abilities to and from campus and take precautions for your safety. COLLEGE ALGEBRA (3-0-3) 27.0101.5419 Fundamentals of algebra, including inequalities, functions, quadratic equations, exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of equations, determinants and instructor option of binomial theorem or progressions (or both). Prerequisite: Satisfactory score on college admission test or MATH 0372 (or MATH 0373). Assessment Levels: R3, E1, M3. Scholastic Dishonesty: Students are expected to maintain the integrity of the College by avoiding dishonesty in their own behavior and by expecting honest behavior from their fellow students. Unfortunately, I simply cannot help you with some technical problems. If you have a problem that they cannot resolve, contact me. Also, take advantage of the MathXL tutorial. It will teach you how to put answers into the program properly. 3. Homework can be reworked as many times as you like. Each time you rework the homework assignment, the program automatically stores the better homework grade. 4. Submitting the assignment is sufficient. You don t have to email me with your results. I automatically receive your results when you submit them. 5. If you don t submit the homework, the program will not grade it and you do not receive credit for that assignment. 6. You are responsible for looking over your course calendar. It can be found by clicking Course Calendar on the left side of your course. 7. Please download all necessary plug-ins.
