MDCA 1460 CLINICAL MEDICAL ASSISTANT COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE (CATALOG) DESCRIPTION: A health related work-based learning experience that enables the student to apply specialized occupational theory, skills, and concepts. Direct supervision is provided by the clinical professional. Attention students: Class participation in this course is MANDATORY and is part of the Grading Policy. Student must maintain all class discussions, quizzes, and all other assignments at the passage rates located in the GRADING CRITERIA AND SCALE for each activity or face a grade of F at the end of the term. Class/ Participation is mandatory. Student must complete a minimum of 160 clinical hours for course completion. Less than 95% participation will be grounds for mandatory withdrawal from the class. Participation will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by both the instructor and the program chair prior to dropping a student from the class. The decision of the faculty is final. Prior notification of non-participation in class or clinical rotations will be required on all occasions. Arriving late or early departure from site will be counted as nonparticipation. The course instructor determines whether an absence is excused or unexcused. CLASS PARTICIPATION IN THIS PROGRAM IS MANDATORY AND IS A PART OF THE GRADING POLICY. It is the student s responsibility to keep contact with the instructor regarding participation grades. *Please refer to the Medical Assistant Student Handbook and Professional Rubric CLASSROOM AND LAB PARTICIPATION Participation in class is mandatory. The student is responsible for any missed assignments, lecture materials, handout, and examinations. It is the student s responsibility to notify the instructor of non-attendance to site or class. Voice-mail is available 24/7. Quizzes will not be made up. If a quiz was given and the student missed it, the student will receive a 0. It is up to the instructor if your absence is excused. The student is responsible for dropping a failing class with a W. If the student fails to withdraw, the student will face a grade of F (failing) at the end of the term. Tardiness will NOT be tolerated. If the student is late or over five minutes, he/she will be counted as tardy. The Professionalism Rubrics will reflect negatively when the student is tardy. *****NO CELL PHONES****** CONDUCT: The need to conduct oneself in a professional manner is not limited to behavior during clinical and practicum, but is equally applicable in the classroom, on any area of the college campus, during any involvement in college-related activities, and at any time that a TSTC Medical Assistant uniform is being worn. The college reserves the right to require the withdrawal of any student at any time, if the student s actions are deemed to be contrary to the best interest of the student body or the College. In addition to the above policy, all rules of conduct as described in the TSTC Student Manual will be followed. Foul language is NOT acceptable at any time. You must pass the professional rubrics to continue in the program. APPEARANCE:

Earrings Student is allowed to use one set of studs only, no larger than 5 mm in size will be permitted. Loop ear rings, ear cuffs, nose rings, eyebrow/lip/tongue rings will NOT be permitted. Rings Wedding band only. Nails These must be no longer than finger-tip length, and only clear polish is permitted. Hair style 1. Females Hair must be tied back, out of face and off neck. Preferable fixed in a bun. No hair ornaments are allowed. Facial make-up must be conservative. 2. Males Hair must be out of face, neatly trimmed, off of neck, NO ponytails. No necklaces or chains are permitted Tattoos/Hickies must be covered at all times. No strong perfumes or colognes. Beards or mustaches must be neatly trimmed and off the lip The student appearance must always be neat and clean i.e. shoes polished, uniform ironed. The TSTC Medical Assistant uniform is not to be worn at any time other than to class, clinical or at the specific instructions of the program for a special event. No skirts, dresses, halter tops, tank tops, sandals or similar footwear will be allowed during lab or class time. REFUSAL TO FOLLOW THE DRESS CODE WILL RESULT IN THE STUDENT BEING SENT HOME WITH AN ABSENCE FOR THE DAY.
