QUALIFICATIONS FOR TEACHING POSITIONS IN THE GREATER VICTORIA SCHOOL DISTRICT # 61 The necessary qualifications for a teaching position in the Greater Victoria School include: 1. A Bachelor s Degree or academic equivalent in an appropriate field of study; 2. A valid B.C. teaching certificate; 3. A knowledge of a broad range of effective instructional strategies in order to meet the diverse needs of all students; 4. Effective communication skills with students, parents and colleagues; 5. Recent, successful, substantive teaching or practical experience in the relevant subject area. In addition to the foregoing generic qualifications, the necessary qualifications for specific teaching positions are indicated below. Article C.21 Definition of Qualifications 1. In this Agreement necessary qualifications in respect of a teaching position means the possession of a valid teaching certificate for the Province of British Columbia, and a reasonable expectation that the teacher can perform the duties of the position based on the following criteria: a. Relevant teaching experience in the subject or teaching area. b. Relevant educational preparation. c. Relevant qualities such as: the teacher s commitment, temperament, experience, less formal training, and past performance. d. Evidence of ability to perform the duties of the position in a satisfactory manner. 2. It shall be the responsibility of each teacher to ensure the Human Resource Services Department has on file the appropriate documentation substantiating necessary qualifications as defined in Article C.21.1 above. 3. Should any appeal arise as to whether a teacher has or does not have the necessary qualifications for a teaching position, the appeal shall be referred to Step 3 of the Grievance Procedure of Article A.6 in this Collective Agreement within five (5) working days from the date that the teacher has received layoff notice from the Board, or from the date that an applicant who has recall rights has received notice from the Board that the applied for position has been filled by another applicant. The appeal shall be in writing and must state the grounds on which the appeal is being lodged. See Letter of Understanding - Appeals During Staffing Process. Teaching Experience 1. Teachers with relevant experience, teaching Kindergarten, Primary, Intermediate or Middle School as a Generalist, who have held a contract and successfully completed an entire instructional cycle* at that level may be deemed qualified for TTOC call-outs and job postings. 2. Teachers with relevant experience teaching a subject area, who have held a contract and successfully completed an entire instructional cycle* at that level may be deemed qualified for TTOC call-outs and job postings. 3. Positions which may require the minimum academic preparation as set by the District include the following: Learning Support, English Language Learner, Deaf and Hard of Hearing and Vision Impaired, Counselling, Library and those positions requiring language proficiency for teaching in language programs other than English. *An entire instructional cycle is defined as planning and delivering subject curriculum and assessing students progress. Academic Preparation 1. Primary Generalist A Bachelor of Arts with a Post Degree Program in (Elementary) Education or Bachelor of Education (Elementary) Degree Primary teaching methodology course A major program concentration in the areas of primary education. 2. Intermediate Generalist A Bachelor of Arts with a Post Degree Program in (Elementary) Education or Bachelor of Education (Elementary) Degree Intermediate teaching methodology course A major program concentration in the areas of intermediate education. 3. Middle Generalist A Bachelor of Arts with a Post Degree Program in (Middle) Education or Bachelor of Education (Middle) Degree Middle or Elementary school teaching methodology course A major program concentration in the area of middle education.

Aboriginal Education: Primary, Intermediate and Middle A Bachelor of Education (Elementary) Degree which includes completion of Indigenous Education or A Bachelor of Arts with a Post Degree Program in Education or Bachelor of Education (Elementary) Degree prior to 2012 must provide completion of Indigenous Education Certificate Primary or Intermediate teaching methodology course 5. Aboriginal Education: Junior and Senior A Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree which includes completion of Indigenous Education or A Bachelor of Arts with a Post Degree Program in Education or Bachelor of Education (Secondary) Degree prior to 2012 must provide completion of Indigenous Education Certificate Secondary teaching methodology course 6.
