Peabody Developmental Motor Scales 2 nd Edition (PDMS-2) Age Range: Birth 5 years Task Examples: Reflexes (until 12 months), stationary body control, locomotion, object manipulation (>12 months), grasping, and visuo-motor integration.
PDMS-2 continued Who uses it: OT, PT, early intervention specialists, adapted PE teachers, researchers Report: GM quotient, FM quotient, Total Quotient. Age equivalents, percentile ranking, description of ranking. Pros: Comprehensive, covers an important age range of skill development, product/process, not just skills Cons: Limited age range, long, may need to be adapted
Tests of Gross Motor Development (TGMD-2) Age Range: 3:0-10:11 Task Examples: Locomotor: run, gallop, hop, leap, horizontal slide. Object Control: hitting off a tee, kicking a ball, dribbling, catch, overhand throw, underhand roll.
TGMD-2 continued Who uses it: researchers, adapted PE teachers, early intervention specialists Reports: Standard and percentile scores and GM quotient Pros: Fast and easy to administer, process oriented, aligned with PE Cons: Limited scope (does not test manual tasks relevant for ADLs), limited age range
Movement Assessment Battery for Children 2 nd Edition (MABC-2) Age: 3:0-16:11 Task Examples: Manual Dexterity Aiming and Catching Balance Tasks are similar but increase in difficulty. Who uses it: researchers, OTs, PTs
MABC-2 continued Report: Standardized scores by age, description of performance, and intervention plan. Pros: Very quick to administer, considered gold standard for identifying movement problems, checklist assesses interference with activities of daily living Cons: Tasks change across age so it s difficult to follow performance longitudinally
Bruininks-Osteretsky Test of Motor Proficiency 2 nd Edition (BOT-2) Age: 4:0 21:11 Task Examples: cutting a circle, connecting dots, copying shapes, transferring coins, sorting cards, threading objects, tapping foot, jumping jacks, walking forward on a line, 1-leg balance, shuttle runs, lateral hops, throwing and catching balls, standing long jump, sit-ups
BOT-2 continued Who uses this: PT, OT, adapted PE, special education resource specialist, researcher Reports: Age-based standardized scores, age equivalents, and description of performance Pros: Large age range, comprehensive, tasks stay the same so you can compare children across ages Cons: Long, not really adapted, overlap across areas
Overview of Sensory-Integration Tests Assessment Age Range Categories of Skill Clinical/Research Beery- Buktenica Developmental Test of Visuomotor IntegraHon 6 th EdiHon Sensory IntegraHon Praxis Test 2:0-99:11 4:0-8:11 Visual percephon, motor coordinahon, gross motor, fine motor Visual, tachle, kinesthehc, and motor OTs, PTs, Researchers OTs, PTs
Beery-Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual- Motor Integration 6 th Edition (BEERY VMI) Age Range: 2:0-99:11 Task Examples: Visual-Motor Integration: copy shapes of progressive difficulty Visual Perception: match shapes Motor Coordination: draw lines through mazes Who uses this: OTs, special education specialists, researchers
BEERY VMI continued Reports: Standard and percentiles scores for each component and description of performance Pros: Quick to administer, inexpensive Cons: Very limited insights into impact of VMI in gross motor tasks and ADLs
Sensory Integration Praxis Test (SIPT) Age Range: 4-8:11 Task Examples: Visual perception, balance, design copying, postural praxis, bilateral coordination, praxis on verbal command, nystagmus, motor accuracy, oral praxis, kinesthesia, finger identification, graphesthesia, tactile stimulation
SIPT continued Who uses this: PTs, OTs Reports: Percentile scores for each of the 17 tests Pros: Very comprehensive Cons: Incredibly long to administer, specialized/ expensive training is required, scoring is expensive, very limited age range
SIPT continued Bodison & Mailloux (2006) OT Practice
