This course functions as a bridge between intermediate-level and advanced-level Japanese. Regular attendance and active class participation are essential to a successful performance in this course. Instructions will be given solely in Japanese. The specific objectives of this course are: 1) to strengthen the basic and intermediate Japanese language proficiency acquired through EALC 120, 122, 220 and 222; 2) to develop oral/aural communication skills as well as reading and writing skills at the pre-advanced level; 3) to help students acquire pre-advanced-level expressions and vocabulary, including kanji; 4) to promote an understanding of present-day Japanese culture; 5) to acquire self-learning skills through small group study planning, execution, and reports. しゅっせき 1. 出席 Attendance and class performance (10%) You are expected to attend all classes and to be punctual. Your class performance is evaluated for each session on the 5-point scale. You are expected to speak only in Japanese once you enter the classroom. Even when you ask questions, make sure to obtain permission to speak in English by saying 日本語で( 上手に ) 言えないので 英語で質問してもいいでしょうか All other communication must be held in Japanese. Failure to observe this rule (e.g., speaking in English in class too often, chatting with your classmates in English) negatively affects your grade. Tardiness and leaving early also negatively affect your grade. You will lose 1 point every time your cell phone makes a noise (including vibration). Please turn off the cell phone before entering the classroom! If you have to miss a class because of a religious observance, you must let the instructor know about it within the first two weeks of the semester. In general, if you have to miss a class, try to contact the instructor either by email or by phone as soon as possible so that you will not miss any information and that you can obtain permission to submit homework late, to make up quizzes and the dialogue check. If a student misses four consecutive sessions without notifying the instructor, it is considered to be a sign of withdrawal from the course, and no handouts, quizzes, tests, or information will be saved for him/her thereafter. しゅくだい 2. 宿題 Homework (10%) Homework is an important part of this course. Homework is assigned from the textbook and from the workbook. All homework should be submitted on the days specified in weekly schedules in order to receive full credit. Most of assignments have two due dates and 2 points to be earned. For the first submission (specified as 1 st in the weekly schedule), please do your best to answer the questions correctly. The instructor will check if it is done and give it 1 point. After it is returned to you, you should check the answers to the assignment on Blackboard (https://blackboard.usc.edu) and correct your homework with the pen of different color and submit it on the 2 nd submission day (specified as 2 nd in the weekly schedule) for another point. After checking the correct answers, if you find your first answers were perfect, write まちが 間違いはありません or チェックしました with the pen of different color before submission. If your homework is not completed or not corrected fully or not marked with 間違いはありません or チェックしました, you will not earn the points. If you missed 1 st submission, wait until the 2 nd submission day. On the 2 nd submission day, please turn it in with your original answers and the corrections to earn 1 point. Whenever you have problems turning in an assignment on time or have any questions about your own answers, please talk to the instructor. Page 3 of 6

3. 漢字クイズ Kanji Quizzes (4%) A mini quiz on kanji will be given three times for each chapter. They are usually given at the beginning of the class. You are required to memorize kanji in each chapter s 漢字リスト, as specified in the weekly schedule. Note that there are kanji you should be able to both read and write(w: 書くのを覚える漢字 ) and kanji you should be able to read(r: 読めればいい漢字 ). You are required to memorize their meanings as well. あんしょう 4. 暗唱チェック Dialogue Check (4%) For Chapters 1-3, you memorize a short dialogue assigned in the weekly schedule then perform it in class. For Chapters 4-6, you will create a short dialogue for each chapter in a group of three students, memorize the lines, and perform the dialogue in class. Group members will be announced in class at the beginning of each chapter. Your performance is graded for accuracy, fluency, naturalness of conversation, etc. さくぶん 5. 作文 Essay (4%) You are required to write four essays during the semester. Topics and length of the essay are specified in the weekly schedule. You should use Japanese word processor. Please don t forget to leave a significant amount of space between the lines so that the instructor can write the comments and corrections. The first draft is graded as an ordinary homework (2-point scale). The second draft is evaluated on the 5-point scale. Your essay (2 nd draft) is graded for its organization, contents, accuracy, and use of vocabulary. Getting help from other people in writing an essay is considered to be an act of academic dishonesty. こじんめんだん 6. 個人面談 Conversation Clinic (2%) You are required to attend Conversation Clinic twice in the semester. The clinic session is an individual meeting with the instructor to check and discuss the problems in their pronunciation, conversation strategies, or any other aspects of Japanese. Schedule one conversation clinic session in each of the following periods: #1 9/16 9/19 #2 11/4 11/7 がくしゅう 7. グループ学習 Group Study (10%) There are Part I and Part II of Group study project. For each part, three students will be grouped together and submit project plans and the weekly reports on the group s progress. There is a group presentation at the end of Part I and Part II. Group study project is an opportunity for students to review the materials of up to Japanese IV (Part I) and to enhance the knowledge and/or skills of their interests (Part 2) in learning Japanese language and culture beyond the classroom. こうとうしけん 8. 口頭試験 Oral Exams (6%) Two Oral examinations will be given during the semester at the end of chapters 3 and 6. Two students form a pair to perform the tasks together in a 10-minute session per exam. Each student will be graded separately. The content of each exam is cumulative and the study guide will be provided before each exam so that the students can practice for the exam with their partners. No make-up exams will be offered unless the student has a legitimate reason and obtains the instructor s approval in a timely manner. だいか 8. 第 X 課のテスト Chapter Tests (15%) A chapter test will be given at the end of Chapters 1, 2, 4, and 5. No make-up tests will be offered unless the student has a legitimate reason and gets the instructor s approval in a timely manner. ちゅうかんしけん 9. 中間試験 Midterm Exam (15%) Midterm examination consists of two 50 min. written exam sessions. The content of the exam is cumulative, i.e., it will cover everything you will have learned up to that point. No make-up midterm exam will be given, unless the student submits a written request for an alternate date beforehand, stating the unavoidable circumstances leading to an expected absence from the exam in question and secures approval from both the instructor and the program director for the make-up exam. きまつしけん 10. 期末試験 Final Exam (20%) The final written exam (2 hours) will be given at the time specified in the schedule of courses. You must take the final exam at the time scheduled for this course. It is your responsibility to resolve potential final exam schedule conflict before you finalize your course registration for the semester (by the end of the 3 rd week).
