Revision Prepare to revise: Consider what environment helps you to revise/concentrate e.g. Quiet with no distractions/interruptions With background music/mp3 player With food and drink to hand Materials you need e.g. larger pieces of paper to mind map/spider diagrams/index cards/postcards for key words/topic sentences/pens, pencils, highlighters Draw up a revision timetable to ensure that you cover all of the subjects/topics Maybe choose one from the following websites or design your own: www.bbc.co.uk/studentlife www.whtvr.org/new-stuff/revision-timetable Organise your revision so that you have the work/notes you are going through in order Revision Techniques: Reading and re-reading through notes/topics (read, cover and recall main points) make sure that you understand everything you are reading! Reading and making notes/writing it out (then reducing your notes further to a smaller number of pages) Reading and making notes of key words/points/headings (on index cards) Reading material and then drawing up a mind map/spider diagram of key words/main points/headings/issues
Reading aloud and recording then listen to it later Talking through topics with friends Describing or explaining the topic/material to someone else Answering practice exam questions (both with notes/books and without) Further Strategies: Break the information into chunks and sections Group similar things together Use mnemonics/personal associations to learn lists/dates etc. Learn each topic listening to a specific song Make a visual mental map by walking around a room/place and attach information/details to the furniture etc. To recall, picture the room and furniture to bring back the information/details attached Make a similar journey around a room/place but make the links between furniture and information to be recalled by talking through the journey
One of the very best ways to revise is to practice examination questions. Download examination papers and mark schemes from the correct exam board (See the list below and check with your teacher. Codes in bold indicate coursework or controlled assignments.) Look at the number of marks per question. This gives you an idea of the number of key points you need to make and how much time you should spend on the question. Do the paper, then mark and correct using the mark scheme. You will improve your examination technique, your skills in applying your knowledge...and your marks.
